【那些英文好的人沒告訴你的秘密】Turn on your "learning mode (學習模式)"

今天要分享給大家一個幫助大家一輩子的學習英文好習慣。
在講這個好習慣之前，先讓大家看看 3 個例子:

A: 學生 (English learner) B: 母語人士 / 類母語人士

/ 對話 1 /
A: What's your bucket list?
B: What's ON my bucket list?
A: Yes.
B: Oh...There are 3 things that are on my bucket list.

/ 對話 2 /
A: What do you have the evening?
B: What do I usually have in the evening?
A: Right.
B: Well, I usually have...

(其實 A 想問的是 "What did you have in the evening?")

/ 對話 3 /
B: I don't wanna do skydiving...
A: haha why?
B: I don't wanna die. I cherish my life. I can do bungee jumping.
A: Why? It's also scared!
B: It's also "scary", but...

(At this point, we're still not sure whether the conversation has helped A learn the difference between "scared" and "scary")

這3個對話告訴我們一件事情，如果多跟母語人士和類母語人士講英文，在 "accuracy" 上面要進步，講得更正確道地的話，一定要將「learning mode」打開。言下之意，就是刻意分配資源、注意力 (attention) 給 "學習" 這件事情。（而不是只是在對話、想 "meaning"; form 的錯誤，會影響到 meaning 的表達)

為什麼呢？
因為我們可以在A的回答中看到，不管是 "Yes" 還是 "Right", 都有可能把 B 的問題當成 "clarification check" 而不是一個「語言學習機會」。

一個受過良好訓練的英文（語言）老師，或是對於學習語言意識強烈的人，在使用英文時，很多時候的“重述 (rephrase / recast)”，其實是有feedback 在其中的 （不管 done consciously or subconsciously)。

因此在學習英文時，如果能夠打開耳朵多多注意對方 (the more fluent speaker) 的 input 和自己的 output 有什麼差異，一定會在學習上有所突破。

Note: 有人可能覺得「阿不是可以溝通就好了！」，但在對話二裡面我們可以清楚看到，其實A可能並沒有問到自己想問的問題。

We made a pact to work together in 2014 but a few months before shooting began I found out my Mom had terminal cancer so I had to pull out of the production. After my Mom passed, I returned to Hong Kong and received another call from Ringo. He still wanted to work with me. We met and talked about what I had just gone through. About life, death, faith and the meaning of it all. It slowly then evolved into the topic of Sky on Fire. I am very proud and honored to have worked with Ringo on this film and I am even more honored that he gave the film the title Sky on Fire linking this film to his previous classics. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with one of the best and now after working with him I now understand why.
