大家好,我们要朗读故事咯!
Have you heard of 小狗请客? I think it is a really nice, meaningful short story and easy to memorise too. For those with P2 kids, this might be familiar because it is one of the 课文.
Anyway, the story behind this is a few months ago, this girl told me she had to go to school early on selected days of the week because she had storytelling practice with her Chinese teacher. She told me there were initially three of them who were chosen to represent their class but one didn't show up so two of them were tasked to tell the whole story on the actual day.
I didn't think much of it till it was over and the teacher sent me a clip of her performance. Not bad at all, Ariel! I wouldn't have been able to do that in P2 and I was proud of how confident she looked and how she calmly remembered all her lines. Thus, we decided to use the same story to do a mother-and-daughter version so we can remember it as well as share this nice story with those of you who speak Mandarin too. I think this is a pretty good way for the kids to learn the language and build up their self-esteem too, right?
P.S. Talking about Chinese, I am regretful to share that 快乐妈咪 column will be taking a break for now as the newspaper is revamping their layout and we have to wait and see what their future plans are. I don't want it to stop me from continuing to write and share my thoughts so hopefully I can write some Chinese posts from time to time on the blog yeah? 谢谢大家!

I've had lots of messages asking for help on keeping little ones entertained at home and the biggest thing I would say is just PLAY!
You don't need fancy or Pinterest-worthy activities, you don't need to reinvent yourself as a preschool teacher, you just need the both of you.
Imagine, dream, play, explore, discover, wonder. Build lots of freedom within boundaries that allow for free play and flexibility.
Remember how much magic there is just in the everyday.
Let them lead. Take care of you.
Our top favorite activities so far have been:
Playing masak-masak
Reading lots of books together and on her own
MOPPING (she's obsessed and loves it!)
Starting a balcony planter w some cilantro roots and sprouted onions!
Painting in the shower (easy clean-up!!)
Lots of yoga/movement videos including a Frozen kids yoga she loves)
Playing dress-up
PODCASTS!!! (check out the post yesterday for our favorites!)
and honestly, just being a little kid.
She's learning about the world and herself, of community and practical life skills that are the foundation to development and growth as well as academic learning.
The key and the only thing to keep in mind is let them be little. Be kind and mindful of their growing self-esteem, your words matter so much and little ears are always listening. Help your little one with the hardest part of the task (but not the whole task). Boredom breeds creativity. Allow quiet moments of wonder. Let go of perfection. What you're experiencing now is not the final goal. It is foundational.
Enjoy the time together and in their eyes, this time together is like Christmas.
Make it Christmas for you too, mama.

@bazaarman_my: Josh Kua is a man with musical talent, striking Asian looks, and a law degree to boot. When he’s not serenading crowds with his skills as a violinist or fronting the covers of magazines, he takes time to champion diversity and highlight social issues close to his heart. “I’m glad to see the (fashion) industry in Malaysia is starting to be more inclusive by embracing darker skin tones,” he tells BAZAARMan. Growing up as a young boy, he had to nurture his confidence and build his self-esteem, on which he shares, “I wish I could have told my younger self that I was perfect just the way I was.”
