DONGZHI冬至= WINTER SOLSTICE
Winter Solstice is one of the important celebrations in Chinese culture. Traditionally, the Dongzhi Festival is also a time for the family to get together. One activity that occurs during these get-togethers (especially in the southern parts of China is the making and eating of tangyuan (湯圓) or glutinous rice balls, which symbolize reunion. Tangyuan are usually in bright colours. They are cooked in a sweet soup. It is also often served with a mildly alcoholic unfiltered rice wine containing whole grains of glutinous rice (and often also Sweet Osmanthus flowers), called jiuniang. It is going to be on 21st December this year. There is a saying if you eat the tang yuan means u are a year older. Hahaha we refused to be older but still eat them anyway as they are so chewy and yummy. I had great memories of my Poh Poh making them every year. Maya loves making them herself, so we have never failed to follow the tradition and make them every year on dongzhi. In fact, Maya was the one who will remind me about tang yuan every year since her school does tell them about the celebration.
They are so easy to prepare and cook. Within 20 mins you can actually have a nice bowl of them if you dont cook with sweet potatoes.
Ingredients for glutinous rice balls :
2 cups glutinous rice, sticky rice flour
200 ml water
food colouring (or make natural colouring from pandan, dragon fruit and so on)
*this is the usual measurements. If you are making a lot. Just add on accordingly.
Ingredients for the soup (I have a 5 litres pot) :
200 g or more ginger slices (pound), best to use Bentong Ginger if you like it spicy. If I wasnt cooking for kids, I will add double the amount
6 pandan leaves
4.5 litres of water
3 cups sweet potatoe cubes (this is an add-on)
1 pack of rock sugar (depending on sweetness)
You may also add palm sugar, peanut paste, seasame paste, red bean paste inside the tang yuan. We have tried chocolate before. They are not bad, just not traditional enough. Do try molding them into cute characters. Kids will enjoy them even more.

12月開始,好像每個月都在過節,冬至、聖誕、新年、農曆年、情人節... 通常這個時候,都會想要帶家人去吃頓好的!如果你剛好在溫哥華,推薦你去「Heirloom Vegetarian」喔~
這是一家蠻高檔的素食餐廳、裝潢很氣派,就當天所觀察,客人全是外國人,而且大家都穿得很正式耶,害我有點小緊張 (畢竟我穿得太隨便了 😆) 食物方面,如大家所想,就是高級西式料理,最喜歡是「韓式炸雞」CA14,特別野味又開胃;再來,「烤未來香腸」CA19,也很不錯,想吃肉的話,點它準沒錯!
這裡的服務還算不錯,食物水平也很高,所以價位也偏高,加上小費的話... 好喇,就獎勵一下自己吧 😋😝
PS 「Heirloom Vegetarian」有兩家分店,還有第三家親民一點的輕食店呢~

This is a very high-end vegetarian restaurant with a very elegant decoration. My favorite goes to "Korean Fried Cauliflower" CA14, which is particularly tasty and appetizing. Today we celebrate one of the most important festivals in Hong Kong - Winter Solstice (冬至). We even say that it is more important than the Lunar New Year 冬大過年!
What Chinese do on a festival is to eat, eat and eat! Many decided to eat outside with their family while some still cook by themselves.
We visited the market early in this morning to get the freshest food for the family dinner. Instead of visiting an outdoor market this time, we went to an indoor market which can be as exciting as the outdoor one!

食翅如做賊, 往往食魚翅都搞到要低調進行, 不過冬至就到, 頻道中除咗炆鮑魚好似無乜做節嘢, 今次整香港人又愛又恨嘅雞煲翅, 其實你唔食鯊魚佢哋都會食你, 我唔會討論呢個問題. 魚翅有平有貴, 我呢煲翅連材料嘅成本都唔洗600, 夠分6人, 每人1-2碗, 而且仲要啖啖都係一梳梳嘅魚翅.

There is a fest called Winter Solstice refer to the Chinese calendar, apart from the stew abalones recipe in my channel, it seems like I need more dishes for upcoming Chinese festivals like CNY, this time I am making Chicken soup, with shark fins and fish maws. I know, haters is gonna hate. There are different kind of shark fins out there, if you prefer to be part of the environment, go for the fake ones. I have also mentioned about the process of dried goods prep. This chicken soup is started from scratch with no sugar, no salt, and no MSG. Everyone loves it. Have a good one.
**補充少少,如用電子湯煲,用保溫模式煮20小時,
如果用明火就要焗火方式,煮滾後最細火蓋上煮半小時,熄火焗3小時,重複3次。
Additional information, if you are using electrical stock pot like me in the video, the final 20 hours of cooking is actually warming the soup to infuse the flavour. If you are using your gas stove, keep the heat at the lowest for 30mins with the lid on and off heat for another 3 hours, repeat this step 3 times.

金華火腿骨 $20-$30
響螺頭 1個
紅棗 3-4粒
瑤柱 4粒
薑片 適量
蔥 1-2條
花膠 人頭件數
魚翅/素翅 適量
Ingredients:
Chicken breast carcasses x2
Lean pork meat HKD$30
A bone of Chinese dried cured ham $20-$30
Conch x1
Jujubes 3-4 pcs
Dried scallops 4 pcs
Ginger slices
Green onions 1-2 stalks
Fish maws
Shark Fins or fake fins.
