【罌粟海濱】

每逢暮春至初夏，罌粟花就以濃豔妍麗的姿態從容綻放輕盈搖曳，為原野染上點點顏彩。尤其是臨著岸邊，浪潮輕拍海風徐來，稠紅纖粉隨之輕舞斑斕，最是賞心悅目。

《淺灘島的罌粟花》（Poppies, Isles of Shoals，1891）捕捉的就是初夏時節，罌粟盛開嬌美時。

從構圖看來，《淺灘島的罌粟花》畫面可分為三部分，藉由長短不同、方向各異的筆觸堆疊：

前景罌粟花叢主要由紅色和綠色醞釀對比效果，中景白色、灰色、藍色和紫色構成海水與岩石，遠景則有迷濛似霧的淡藍色撐出一片晴空。飽滿濃密映襯淺淡灰褐，使得罌粟花叢與崎嶇岩岸之間，也自有映照。

於是乎無論色彩或質感，都有了輕重剛柔的相較。

望向遠處，背景是一望無際的海洋連結遼闊的天空。幾座礁岩錯落岸邊，偶有帆船駛過，說明此處並非荒島，而是休閒度假之處。沿著岸邊散步，可以享受海洋氣息吻過臉頰，欣賞水面波瀾瑩澤，還有迎風飛颺翩翩花影。要是興起，再駕船出海徜徉穹天碧海，正如陽春煙景，大塊文章那般暢意自得。

坐困家中焦慮戒慎的當下，光是看這畫面都舒心許多，你說是不是？

就主題、色調和手法而言，《淺灘島的罌粟花》可說是典型印象派風格，而且看起來似乎跟莫內（Claude Monet，1840-1926）的諾曼地系列場景頗為類似？然而這件作品卻是出自美國畫家柴爾德･哈薩姆（Childe Hassam，1859-1935）之手。

哈薩姆是美國印象派先驅，職業生涯漫長、多產且成功。他的創作種類多元，包含油畫、水彩、粉彩與插畫共2000多幅，自1912年開始，又陸續創作400多組銅版畫。創作量這麼大，並不是畫心酸給自己看，人家哈薩姆不僅擁有良好聲譽，作品銷售成績也很傲人。

事實上也是因為哈薩姆和另一位美國印象派女畫家瑪莉･卡莎特（Mary Cassatt，1844-1926）推波助瀾影響之下，美國收藏家後來購入更多印象派作品，大大開闢海外市場，迎來事業高峰。由此可見他在美國畫壇的地位。

就像當時許多有志於藝術創作的年輕人那樣，都得到巴黎打滾實際體驗過一番，才會找到人生方向，即使23歲時便已在波士頓享有名聲，哈薩姆毅然決定在26歲那年前往巴黎取經學習。算起來，他跟梵谷一樣，1886年來到巴黎時，印象派已經是最後一次舉辦畫展，接下來當年共同對抗古典學院傳統的眾人要各奔前程各尋出路。

而人在巴黎的哈薩姆，張開雙臂熱情擁抱印象派以及法國文化，在那如魚得水過了3年，才回到美國，定居紐約。

哈薩姆的創作以描繪新興繁榮的城市景觀聞名，紐約、巴黎和波士頓這幾座大城最常出現在他筆下。

然而早在遠赴巴黎之前，哈薩姆就曾經說過：「能夠流傳後代者，就是描繪自己的時代和日常生活場景的人。」

說起來就是因為取材自當代生活，創造獨特〝時代感〞，後世如我們才能見到那些年的那些人和事。若只是糾結於傳統神話、歷史和宗教題材，除了技法革新或者人物服裝著墨有所差異，其實很難讀出時代訊息對吧？哈薩姆對當代生活題材的堅持便如同印象派。

但是在擁擠都會待久了，總是需要僻靜之處舒緩歇息，因此哈薩姆也常在鄉村歇憩，藉以取得靈感。對他而言，描繪當代生活始終是創作中心，無論是喧囂城市或者是靜謐郊野。

《淺灘島的罌粟花》便是哈薩姆在美國東北緬因州淺灘島（Isles of Shoals）放暑假時的作品。

哈薩姆在島上的避暑生活肯定很愜意，因為這兒有當時新英格蘭地區最早的度假飯店之一-阿普多爾飯店（Appledore House）。飯店經營者中包含哈薩姆的好朋友-女詩人西莉亞･薩克斯特（Celia Thaxter，1835-1894）。

薩克斯特自小在淺灘島長大，阿普多爾飯店即是由她的父親所創立。或許是家境富裕，也是父親觀念開明，加上自身才華，飯店千金薩克斯特得以生活無虞專心創作，名列19世紀末美國最受歡迎的作家。

有薩克斯特坐鎮的阿普多爾飯店，不僅招來哈薩姆1890至1894年間到此度過夏天，暫時解脫擾嚷塵煙，也吸引眾多紐約仕紳名流和藝文界人士前來度假。薩克斯特以她女性特有的細膩品味管理飯店花園，在岸邊種滿罌粟花，為她自己提供寫作材料，也成為哈薩姆的創作養分。

若是以阿普多爾飯店受歡迎的程度，實際上不可能像《淺灘島的罌粟花》畫面裡那般杳無人煙，僅有帆船和孤鳥掠過遠處；然而繪畫本來就不同於攝影，畫家會在構圖時有所考量添加或刪減，以求最佳效果。因此哈薩姆捨去人群，僅以遠帆暗示稀罕人跡與恬適氣氛。

《淺灘島的罌粟花》是哈薩姆的〝阿普多爾飯店放暑假〞系列中最傑出的作品之一，反映了他成功處理光線和色彩的出色技巧，也體現19世紀晚期對於新英格蘭早期殖民地區景色的欣賞。

可惜女詩人薩克斯特1894年去世之後，飯店失去往日光彩，景況不再，更於1914年毀於一場大火，那些風流往事僅存斷垣殘壁焦土槁木，總是讓人唏噓。

幸虧後來花園獲得重建，也成為當地重要觀光景點，好讓人遙想鍍金時代時，飯店千金與藝文人士的飛揚與風雅。

1919年，早已事業有成的哈薩姆和妻子在紐約長島東漢普頓（East Hampton）買下一座殖民時期古宅，作為夏季避暑之處。如今此地早已是紐約名流重要置產之處，冠蓋雲集，動輒天價。能在東漢普頓夠擁有一座度假莊園，更是富豪彰顯身價必備要件。

Allen Ezail Iverson (born June 7, 1975) is an American retired professional basketball player who played for four different teams (Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, Memphis Grizzlies, Detroit Pistons) during 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played both the point guard and shooting guard positions. Iverson was an eleven-time NBA All-Star and won the All-Star MVP award in 2001 and 2005.

Iverson attended Bethel High School in Hampton, Virginia and was a dual-sport athlete. He earned the Associated Press High School Player of the Year award in both football and basketball, and won the Division AAA Virginia state championship in both sports. After high school, Iverson attended Georgetown University for two years, where he set the school record for career scoring average (22.9 points per game) and won Big East Defensive Player of the Year awards both years.

Following two successful years at Georgetown, Iverson declared eligibility for the 1996 NBA Draft, and was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the number one pick. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in the 1996–97 season. Winning the NBA scoring title during the 1998–99, 2000–01, 2001–02 and 2004–05 seasons, Iverson was one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, despite his small stature (listed at 6 feet, 0 inches). His regular season career scoring average of 26.7 points per game ranks sixth all-time, and his playoff career scoring average of 29.7 points per game is second only to Michael Jordan. Iverson was also the NBA Most Valuable Player of the 2000–01 season and led his team to the 2001 NBA Finals the same season. Iverson represented the United States at the 2004 Summer Olympics, winning the bronze medal. He also played for the Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons and the Memphis Grizzlies, before ending his NBA career with the 76ers during the 2009–10 season.

He was rated the fifth-greatest NBA shooting guard of all time by ESPN in 2008. Iverson officially announced his retirement from professional basketball on October 30, 2013.

If Allen Iverson ever becomes a New York Knick, watch out. The 6-foot Georgetown sophomore from Hampton, Va. entered last night's Big East quarterfinal game against Miami averaging 34 points per contest this season at Madison Square Garden. The Hurricanes did little to stop Iverson's Manhattan mastery, as Iverson struck for 38 points and Georgetown rebounded from a lackluster first half to dismiss Miami 92-62 before a sellout crowd of 19,544.

Allen Iverson scored 38 points to tie the second-highest total in Big East tournament history. The Hoyas (25-6) reached the semifinal round for the seventh time in eight years and the 14th over all. Miami (15-13) was within 3 points at halftime before the Hoyas outscored the Hurricanes, 51-24.

Iverson made 11 of 21 shots, including 6 of 9 from 3-point range. He made 10 of 11 free throws, with 6 assists, 6 turnovers and 2 steals. In the seven games Iverson has played at Madison Square Garden, the sophomore has averaged 32.2 points. His 38 points in a Big East tournament game trailed only Connecticut's Donyell Marshall, who scored 42 against St. John's two years ago.

Yet near the end, with the Hoyas comfortably ahead, Georgetown Coach John Thompson created a sense of urgency to Iverson's game. "He tells me the end of the game is my time, I should have the ball in my hands," Iverson said. "So if somebody else turns it over, he yells at me. I just tell my teammates: 'Let me get the ball. He'll scream at me.' "

Steve Rich, a Miami senior forward, scored 15 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Steven Edwards, Miami's leading scorer with an average of 13.2 points, did not score.

Georgetown holds the conference record with six tournament championships, twice as many as Syracuse, the next most successful program. But the Hoyas have not won a Big East title since 1989.

"As long as we play defense hard," Iverson said, "everything is going to work out for us."
