🚧 New investments from Alphabet Inc.’s Google and from Apple Inc. offer the first detailed look at how the big technology companies are following through on their pledges to help ease the West Coast’s shortage of affordable housing.

為減輕美國西岸平價住宅短缺問題，谷歌和蘋果公司的投資計畫首度揭開了這些大科技公司如何兌現承諾的方案細節。

⚒ Major tech corporations have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the past year to increase the supply of affordable housing in their backyards, after years of criticism that the booming tech sector was partly to blame for housing shortages in Silicon Valley and Seattle.
在過去一年內，這些大科技公司拿出數億美元在其土地上興建平價住宅。矽谷和西雅圖是高科技產業發展重鎮，而蓬勃發展的高科技公司長年以來被批評為這些地區住房短缺的元兇。

📈 Google said Thursday that it has deployed the first $115 million of the $1 billion commitment it made last year to affordable housing. Its investments so far have included $100 million in low-cost funding for housing developers and an investment in a modular-housing company, Factory_OS, to help it build a second housing factory. Google said it expects its investments to create about 24,000 new units of affordable housing by 2029.

谷歌於週四宣布已將去年承諾的10億美元投資計畫中的第一筆1.15億美元兌現，用以開發可負擔住宅。截至目前，谷歌的投資計畫包括為房產開發商提供1億美元的低成本資金，並且投資Factory_OS這間模組化住宅公司，助其興建第二座住房工廠。預計到2029年，谷歌的住宅投資計畫將帶來約24,000套全新平價住宅。

🍎 Apple said last week that it has allocated the first $400 million of the $2.5 billion investment it made in 2019. In addition to loans to affordable-housing developments, Apple has worked with the California Housing Finance Agency to provide down-payment and mortgage assistance for hundreds of first-time home buyers.

蘋果在上週表示，已兌現2019年宣布的25億美元投資計畫中的第一筆4億美元，將其用於可負擔住宅。除了提供貸款給可負擔住房開發案之外，蘋果還與加州住宅金融局（California Housing Finance Agency）聯手合作，為數百名首購族提供頭期款和房屋抵押貸款協助。

Ranked the world’s most unaffordable housing market, Hong Kong has long been struggling with a severe shortage of public housing as the number of applications and the waiting time keep breaking records. While public housing apartments are highly sought after by urban dwellers of all ages, not many are aware of the unique features and historical development of these estates.

Iain Cocks fell in love with the city’s public housing estates when he moved to Hong Kong from London 13 years ago. The kindergarten teacher often photographs the estates near his workplace during the week and visits those further out on his days off. Cocks' shots of urban density carry a style reminiscent of the late German photographer Michael Wolf. Apart from sharing his pictures on Instagram (@gaatzaat), the Englishman also keeps a record that chronicles Hong Kong’s public housing development over the years.
