This extremely brave young lady had to travel to the US in secret and had a whirlwind of a week at Miss Universe. The suitcase that had all of Thuzar Wint Lwin's outfits — including her original national costume — for the competition was lost by the airline. She had to borrow outfits from some contestants while the organizers helped her secure an evening gown.
People from Myanmar who lived in the US were also able to send Lwin a traditional dress to walk the stage for the national costume contest.
And she won Best National Costume. Deservedly so.
For those who don't know, her country succumbed to a military coup 3 months ago. And almost 800 protesters have been killed by the ruling military Junta.
It probably took a lot of courage to hold that sign up because it very likely means she'll be prosecuted if she ever returns to her country.
