"Did you manage to finish you uni?" I asked Sharifa while we were on the way to Dahal Orhan, a villages located two hours from Bamyan center. Our helix rattled as it drove along the bumpy road for hours, the cold weather on mountain made me feel awful. I first met Sharifa, co worker of Dr Moin three years ago when I was here. That was the time when I was still a hippy, traveling around and careless like bird. "No I couldn't, is stopped my course as I need more time to work in order to have some saving," she said. She was working for a Netherland-based NGO in the province, a high-paid job for locals whom earn less than USD50 per month. She was staying with her younger brother who injured his spine years ago. They rented a room in the suburbs. As the job is contract-based, she might just lost the job when the NGO's contract comes to end. And that time she might have to return to the village and farm, and probably live like the other oppressed Afghan women. "Do you see anyway for me to study in overseas?" She asked me.
I use this picture a lot as the first slide of my presentations when I am in Malaysia these days. I don't know why but I think it portrays us as young passionate laid, who would go through mountains and who would fight life. I think it seems cool too, like a poster picture of James Bond.
