引擎的凸輪軸安裝位置有下置、中置、頂置三種形式,轎車引擎由於轉速較快,每分鐘轉速可達5000轉以上,為保證進排氣效率,都採用進氣門和排氣門倒掛的形式,即頂置式氣門裝置,這種裝置能夠適用於凸輪軸的三種安裝形式,但是,假如採用下置式或者中置式的凸輪軸,由於氣門與凸輪軸的距離較遠,需要氣門挺桿和挺柱等輔助零件,造成氣門傳動機件較多,結構複雜,引擎體積大,而且在高速運轉下還輕易產生噪聲,而採用頂置式凸輪軸則可以改變這種噪音現象。所以,現代轎車引擎一般都採用了頂置式凸輪軸,將凸輪軸配置在發動機的上方,縮短了凸輪軸與氣門之間的距離,省略了氣門的挺桿和挺柱,簡化了凸輪軸到氣門之間的傳動機構,將引擎的結構變得更加緊湊,更重要的是,這種安裝方式可以減少整個系統往復運動的質量,提高了傳動效率,按凸輪軸數目的多少,可分為單頂置凸輪軸(SOHC)和雙頂置凸輪軸(DOHC)兩種,由於中高檔轎車引擎一般是多氣門及V型氣缸排列,需採用雙凸輪軸分別控制進排氣門,因此雙頂置凸輪軸被不少名引擎使用!

歴史(1970年-1978年)A53C/A55C/A57C型
1969年秋 - ギャランクーペGTX-1の名で東京モーターショーに出展される。
1970年10月 - コルトギャランGTOの名前で発表および発売。イメージリーダー的グレードの「MR」は同年12月発売。当初は全てOHCヘッドを用いたサターンエンジン(4G32型エンジン)を搭載していた。内、「MR」に限りDOHCヘッド化されたエンジン(4G32型)を搭載。メッキグリルと黒いライトベゼルが前期顔である。テールランプは赤一色の角型4灯で、テールウインカーはブレーキ/テールランプ共用となっているのが初期型の特徴。テールは4灯同時に点灯、ウインカー作動時は片側2灯ずつ点滅する。
1972年2月 - 排気量を100ccアップしたエンジン(4G35型SOHCエンジン)を搭載した17Xシリーズとなり、AT車を追加。これに伴い「MR」を除き1,600ccの4G32型SOHCエンジン搭載車が廃止。テールデザインは変わっていないが、赤4灯だったテールの内側2灯がウインカーとして割り振られ、レンズがオレンジ色になった。テール/ブレーキ共用だったテールウインカーは現在の車と同じ独立した点灯方式になっている(これによって4灯だったテール/ブレーキは外側2灯のみ点灯となる)。
8月 - 昭和48年排出ガス規制により「MR」廃止。高価なMRは835台生産と少数に留まる。
1973年
1月 - マイナーチェンジ。フロントグリル、テールランプの意匠変更。テールは角形4灯からひらがなの「く」型を基調としたデザインになっている。デザイン変更により、独立したウインカーを配置した上で再びテール/ブレーキランプが4灯になっている。「1700SL」以外、2,000ccのアストロンエンジン(4G52型SOHCエンジン)へ移行する。トップグレードの「GS-R」はMRと同じ125馬力。
10月 - 一部改良(安全対策)。
1974年8月 - 保安基準改正によりオーバーフェンダ装着車である「GS-R」廃止。
1975年
2月 - 2度目のマイナーチェンジ(仕様変更・安全対策)。3速AT車が廃止。2,000ccはサイレントシャフトが搭載されたアストロン80エンジン(4G52型エンジン)に変更。馬力変更は無し。GS-Rは高速走行時に車体を安定させる効果のあるエアダムスカートを装着。
10月 - 一部変更。昭和51年排出ガス規制適合により全車パワーダウンを余儀なくされる。「1700SL」が4速MTから5速MTに変更され、「1700SL-5」に改称。事実上、トランスミッションが全車、5速MTに統一となる。
1976年
5月 - 一部変更(仕様変更・安全対策・最終型)。自動車保安基準改正による安全対策の強化のため前後バンパーの側面部分に黒色塩ビ樹脂製のサイドプロテクターが標準で装着される。これに伴いグレードが整理され、需要不振を理由に「2000GS-5」のみカタログ落ちとなる。
1977年7月 - 昭和53年排出ガス規制に適合出来ず生産終了。以後、流通在庫分のみの販売となる。
1978年3月 - 販売終了。日本国内における総生産・販売台数は95,720台だった。 実質的な後継車は三菱・ギャランΛとなる。なお、後のGTOはスタリオンの系譜である。

Then, all technologies at that time will be concentrated on manufacturing as a motorcycle at that time because it becomes a maximum level displacement though the vehicle that can correspond also to a recent race standard after coexisting of the performance and room is attempted because of the expansion of the displacement is planned and production was decided.
The vehicle manufactured thus is dream CB750FOUR (henceforth CB). The dream of the car name is a series trademark that HONDA was using for the efficient at that time, sports type.
