【mediopassive voice 】聽見一棵樹倒下的聲音


文法的使用有兩種，一種是限制，一種是解釋


例如最近學生問我這個句子
Our products sell faster when the temperature drops.

她的主管特地回她一封email，「提醒」她：...are sold faster...才對
她直覺原句沒問題，於是用我們上課談過的方式找了一些母語使用者的例句（同樣是sell faster），拿去跟主管請教，主管略過證據，跟她說這個要用passive voice，最後補了一句「不然你可以去問你英文老師」

如果採用 #全知視角 來看待學過的文法，你會以爲自己已學會語言的全貌，很容易因此限制了語言的使用，而全知視角其實是個幻覺，面對不斷演化的語言行為，文法永遠只能追著變化跑，文法是為了了解更多、解釋更多而誕生的分類，文法永遠留有一個位置給「未知」，採用 #未知視角 的文法學習者，會更能接受違例的存在，如果你學會認真看待違例，你就越能逼近真確。


然後瓦老師的回答如下
除了大部分人熟悉的active voice(主動語態)與passive voice(被動語態)以外，英文還能夠切分出更細緻的mediopassive voice來，英語裡只有些許的動詞語意(這類動詞也有類別名稱:ergative verb)能夠表現這樣的中間語態，例如

The book reads like a manual for deception.

書雖然該是「被讀」，但出現在mediopassive voice的語態中，它也同時「主動」影響了讀者的感受，同樣的例子還有

This kind of content shares well on social media.
The wine drinks smoothly.
The window opens easily.


你聽不見遠方一棵樹倒下，並不代表森林裡什麼也沒有發生
樹倒下時擠壓了空氣分子的排列，引發了震動，你的耳膜受到刺激，傳遞了神經訊息到腦裡，森林裡的巨響只是樹倒下時你能察覺的一種世界事件，你無法察覺的還有很多，你聞不到樹倒下的味道(但狗狗可以)，你測不到樹倒下的音波變化(但蝙蝠可以)，全知視角容易限制你，未知視角提醒你要多蒐集，慢慢拼湊真確的樣貌

有人說才子陶傑前輩用英文寫了一個 post，批評他英文不夠好。看完之後，覺得實在是吹毛求疵，如此水平已經好過很多人了。再者，才子每天寫字多過你呼吸，怎能每篇都寫到完美呢？幸好他這篇沒有用上十成功力，才讓晚輩有機會切磋切磋。紅都面晒，獻醜了。

陶傑：After my previous post to you, a friend of mine in the British education advisory career has received this request from a Hong Kong Chinese reporter. Pay attention to what the Chinese reporter said.

葉某：After my previous post, a friend of mine in the British education advisory sector received this message from a Hong Kong Chinese reporter, which I want to draw your attention to.

(好像 draw your attention to 沒有 Pay attention to 那麼霸氣，順耳一點吧。)

陶傑：She called my statements that ‘Boarding schools are there to train leadership rather than refugees’ and ‘Boarding school education is designed for staying calm and team spirit‘ as ‘being sarcastic’.

葉某：She referred to my statements, that ‘Boarding schools are there to train leaders rather than refugees…Boarding school education is designed for staying calm and team spirit’, as being “sarcastic”.

(盡量避免 called 或 said 等字，因為詞彙越精準，效果更好，所以用 referred。)

陶傑：I invite you all to have some reflection on the following questions:

（可以的話，盡量避免用 noun 代替 verb，不用太造作。)

陶傑：While stating some basic and simple facts that most British boarding schools also do in their prospectuses do you agree that going to a British boarding school is an act of sarcasm or self-mockery?

葉某：Ignoring the fact that I was stating some basic and simple facts, that most British boarding schools also do in their prospectuses, do you agree that going to a British boarding school is in itself an ironic act of self-mockery? An act of “sarcasm”, perhaps?

(其實我不太掌握到才子的意思，所以沒有什麼改動，純是 style 問題。)

陶傑：Do you agree that average Chinese hardly understand the philosophy of a British or Swiss boarding school apart from being an expensive learning place for high fees?

葉某：Do you agree that the average Chinese person barely understands the philosophy of a British or Swiss boarding school, besides it being an expensive “learning place” with high fees?

（這段的問題比較大，上文說 “hardly understands the philosophy” 然後下文說 “apart from being”，邏輯上有點難以理解。除了我的 besides it being，當然用才子的 apart from 也可以；但就算用 apart from 都一定要加 comma 和 “it”，否則是錯。）

陶傑：Or is it only a matter of multiculturalism that such people tend to attribute all questions based on facts and common sense that they are unable to answer logically to ‘being sarcastic‘?

葉某：Or perhaps it is merely down to multiculturalism, that when people are unable to understand an argument and respond with common sense and logic, such people tend to disregard facts and dismiss all questions and other opinions as ‘being sarcastic’?

(同樣也只是 style 問題，但明顯地我的 style 在這個情況下更能清晰表達當中意思。Dismiss 一個字簡單，但語氣強烈，是好字。)

陶傑：If so, is it exactly the reason why you go to a Western boarding school to avoid asking questions of this kind when you grow up (No, I wouldn’t say ‘avoid being so Chinese’ as it sounds, hm, a bit sensitive as the debate of how a global virus should be accurately name is going on) ?

葉某：If so, isn’t it exactly the reason why you go to a Western boarding school to avoid responding in this way when you grow up? (I’ve refrained from saying ‘avoid being so Chinese’ as it sounds a bit sensitive whilst the debate of how a global virus should be accurately named is going on)

(應該是 isn’t it exactly 而不是 is it exactly 吧，我猜是他的 typo 而已。)

陶傑：Interesting, hey?

葉某：Food for thought, hey?

(更寸自然更型，no？)

陶傑：So, the last thing I’d love to see is you guys staging a street protest demanding my apology and withdrawal of my earlier Facebook message, as Dr Yuen Kwok-yung (or Dr Yuan Guo-Yong) just did. Chinese tend to get boiled up and fuming rather easily nowadays.

(在下不才，真的沒有聽過 boiled up 可以用 passive voice，所以我改了 get boiled up，用了 get riled up。)

又懶了一個早上，夠鐘放飯。

【學會給自己機會】(English writing below)

昨晚，有臉書朋友看了我的直播，說我像新聞主播，如果以後有電視台找我，那可好了！

我說：

「我，已經是我自己的電視台了。不等別人給我機會，我自己給我機會。不等別人發掘我，我自己發掘我的才華。這就是改命，不甘心認命。」

一直等待伯樂的人，是被動的。再說，等久了，人也老了。真的給你等到時，能夠受用的時間也沒有多少年了。等不到的話，這一生豈不是白白就過了嗎？

2016年，第一次做直播時，就有臉書朋友告訴我，我像新聞播報員。

三年後，連我師父前天也這麼說。

師父看著我的臉書限時動態時（我幾乎每天上傳）：「妳成長了。這三年內，妳成長了。」

我的工作，是給予他人希望。所以從我的直播，你會看出我語氣的肯定。

很多人在生活上面對大大小小的問題，需要我們風水命理師的指引。

我站出來，在大家面前亮相，才能給別人機會認識我，認識命運，進而改命。

我欣賞願意面對自己問題，又勇於請教別人的客人，如照片中發我私訊的那位客人。

不要在問題中糾結，而困自己在死結中。自尋煩惱是慢性自殺。

不要習慣受苦，使你忽略站可以拉你一把的人。苦久了，不斷被煩惱燒的心會成了一片迷霧，自己的臉也醺得更難看了。

只要主動，明天一定會更好，因為你給了你自己機會。

（但不包括主動佔別人便宜的人～）

Yesterday, after watching my Live, a FB Friend commented that I resembled a newscaster. She said it would be great if I get noticed by a TV station.

My reply:

“I am already my own TV station. Instead of waiting for others to give me a chance, I create opportunities for myself. Instead of waiting for others to discover me, I discover my own talents. This is how we transform our destinies, not succumbing to fate.”

A person who is always waiting for his talent scout to appear is passive. Moreover, the longer you wait, the older you get. If your talent scout appears in your later years, there aren't that many usable years left of you. And wouldn't my whole life be wasted if my talent scout never appear?

In my first Live in 2016, I already have FB friends who compared me to being a news broadcaster.

Three years later, even my Shifu said the same thing. While watching my FB story (I update almost everyday), Shifu commented, "You have grown up. In these 3 years, you have really grown up."

My job is to give hope to other people. And you can tell from the assertiveness in my voice as I speak in my Lives.

There are many people who face all kinds and all sizes of problems, and require the guidance of Chinese Metaphysics.

Because I choose to step out in front of the masses, I give myself and others a chance to know me, know their Destiny and change their destinies.

I look up to people who choose to face their problems squarely, and take the initiative to seek guidance from others, like the client who PM me in the photo.

Don't get all entangled in your problems and tie yourself into a dead knot. Always looking for problems to fuss about is a slow form of mental suicide.

Don't get too used to sufferings that you ignore the person who can pull you up. When you suffer for too long, your afflictions form a hazy cloud around your heart and you turn uglier.

As long as you make the first move to help yourself, tomorrow will be a better day.

(Excluding people who take the initiative to freeload though...)

你也可以擁有不動幸福 YOU TOO CAN ACHIEVE PASSIVE HAPPINESS

我們一出生，就從來沒有停止過去追求幸福。小時後，吃喜歡的食物，玩新的玩具，去新的地方，長大後，追求愛情、事業、金錢.......

但有的人，天生八字真的不怎麼樣，小時讀書馬馬虎虎，長大後，要財沒財，要事業沒事業，要愛情沒愛情，原生家庭又給不到她他溫暖。

於是，有些人把希望寄託在孩子身上，以為自己生孩子，也能夠製造一個快樂溫馨的家庭，是他們的人生終極目標。

但是他們都沒發現，他們的八字根本沒有這樣的命。夢想和現實起了對立，有了自己的家庭後，反而煩惱更多，快樂更少。

錢依然不夠用，伴侶原來不是稱職的家長，大家會為了孩子的事吵架、冷戰。

孩子健康又不好、情緒管理差、很難教，女傭讓他們很傷腦筋，兼顧家庭和事業也讓自己不停和時間賽跑，活得沒有自己，也不知道到底哪一天才會雨過天晴。

八字無法改，但是一命二運三風水，所以八字沒有的，聰明的人會用風水來補助自己的運。

我常跟客人說：不要傻傻地吃苦。很多時候，只要把居家風水搞好，很多的問題都能迎刃而解。這基礎做好了，就算您沒有去追求，幸福也會自動降臨您家。

Since our birth, we have never stopped pursuing happiness. As kids, we cheer when we get to eat our favourite food, play new toys and see new places. As adults, we chase love, career achievements and  money. 

However, there are some people whose Bazi are really nothing to shout about. When they are young, their academics are so so. When they grow up, they want money but they don't get it. They want a good career, but no, it didn't happen. They crave a good relationship but nah, they never have it. And the family they grow in couldn't give them the warmth in their lives either.

Hence, some of them place their hopes on having children they think belong to them. They envision that they can finally create a loving and warm family. That shall be their ultimate life goal. That is why people work so hard for, isn't it?

But what they didn't realise is that their Bazi were not able to support them in their pursuits. Their dreams and the reality they face every day become a stark disparity. As they have their own families, instead of having more happiness, they get more troubled.

Money still remains scarce, and the spouse turns out be an incompetent parent, causing conflicts and cold wars in the marriage over the children. 

The children aren't any better off. Their health fluctuates, they are poor in emotional management, do not listen well to instructions. With both parents working, getting a good maid is necessary. Yet, this maid becomes another headache. Balancing both family and work starts taking a toll on them. Every day is a race against time. There's no living for yourself like what all those new age gurus preached. Worse is when they have no idea EXACTLY WHEN life will be better. 

We can't change our Bazi. So as the Chinese saying goes, first is our Destiny, second is our Luck, third will be our Feng Shui. Whatever our Bazi lacks, the smart person will make up for it by using Feng Shui to supplement their own luck. 

Don't suffer in vain, when a solution is actually within reach. In many situations, after the home Feng Shui is done right, many problems get resolved.  Once this foundation is laid right, even when you are not actively chasing for it like a mad hamster, happiness will descend into your home by default.
