Chateau de Chillon was owned by the Savoy family from the 12th to 16th Century, and later occupied by the residents of Bourne and the residents of Vaud. This beautiful place, however, also served as a prison at the same time. It was the inspiration of Lord Byron's famous poem - "The Prisoner of Chillon":

//There are seven pillars of Gothic mould,
In Chillon's dungeons deep and old,
There are seven columns, massy and grey,
Dim with a dull imprison'd ray//
