Egypt’s Suez Canal: a maritime choke point
The 400-meter long, 220,000-ton MV [motor vessel ( )] Ever Given, classed as a so-called “megaship,” veered ( ) off course during a gale-force ( ) duststorm ( ).
The 59-meter-wide Taiwan-run, Panama-flagged vessel became stuck ( ) near the southern end of the Suez Canal, diagonally ( ) blocking the man-made ( ) waterway ( ) that connects the Mediterranean with the Red Sea.
Opened 150 years ago, Egypt’s Suez Canal has been regularly expanded ( ) and modernized, and it is today capable of ( ) accommodating ( ) some of the world’s largest supertankers ( ), handling roughly 10 percent of international maritime trade. In 2019 around 50 ships used the canal daily, compared with three in 1869.
The majority ( ) of oil transported by sea passes through the Suez Canal, which is the fastest crossing ( ) from the North Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean, but demands hefty ( ) passage tolls ( ). The journey between ports in the Persian Gulf and London, for example, is roughly halved ( ) by going through the Suez Canal compared to the alternate ( ) route via the southern tip of Africa.
Most of the cargo ( ) traveling from the Persian Gulf to Western Europe is oil. In the opposite direction, it is mostly manufactured goods and grain ( ) from Europe and North America headed to the Far East and Asia.
The latest blockage ( ) highlights ( ) the risks faced by the shipping industry as more and more vessels transit ( ) maritime choke points including the Suez and Panama canals, the Strait of Hormuz and Southeast Asia’s Malacca Strait. Those routes ( ) are also having to accommodate increasingly larger ships that are more complex ( ) to rescue, while the container-carrying capacity of vessels has doubled in the past decade.
埃及蘇伊士運河:世界海運之吭
長達四百公尺、二十二萬噸,屬於所謂「超大型船舶」的內燃機船「長賜號」,在沙塵暴的大風中偏離了航道。
這艘五十九公尺寬,由台灣企業經營、以巴拿馬為船旗國的船卡在蘇伊士運河南端附近,以斜角堵住了這條連接地中海與紅海的人造水路。
埃及的蘇伊士運河一百五十年前開航,一直定期進行擴建及現代化改造,如今能夠容納世界上最大的一些超級油輪,經手大約百分之十的國際海洋貿易。二○一九年,每天約有五十艘船通過運河,在一八六九年則為每日三艘。
大部分經海路運輸的石油都會通過蘇伊士運河,但需付高額通行費,蘇伊士運河是由北大西洋通往印度洋最快的渡口。例如,要來往波斯灣諸港及倫敦之間,經由蘇伊士運河要比繞道非洲南端的替代路線縮短了大約一半的行程。
由波斯灣運往西歐的貨品大部分為石油;而反方向的運輸,主要是將歐洲及北美洲的製成品與穀物,運往遠東及亞洲。
近日的蘇伊士運河堵塞事件確實凸顯出航運業所面臨的風險,因為有越來越多的船通過海上戰略咽喉要塞,包括蘇伊士運河、巴拿馬運河、荷莫茲海峽,以及東南亞的麻六甲海峽。這些路線還必須容納體積越來越大的船舶,體積越大,救援起來就越複雜。船舶的裝載貨櫃容量在過去十年中整整翻了一倍。

Possess your Inheritance at the Right Time
“When Pharaoh had let the people go, God didn’t lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and they return to Egypt”; but God led the people around by the way of the wilderness by the Red Sea; and the children of Israel went up armed out of the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 13:17-18 WEB)
Sometimes in hindsight, you may look back and wonder, “Lord, why did you let me take this huge detour and zig-zag path?” You could have just saved me lots of time by leading me in a straight line!”
If you have a thought like that, consider it more deeply. You will notice that back then, your faith and character was not as developed as now. God needed the extra time to work on you, to make the blessings that you are ready for now, safe for you.
A shortcut is not a good thing when it is accessed at the wrong time. The devil doesn’t mind giving you shortcuts as long as you destroy yourself in the process. When you are not ready for something, it will only do more harm to you than good.
If the children of Israel had tried the shorter route through the land of the Philistines, they would see the fierce war happening there and run back to Egypt which was ‘safe’ and familiar, only to be enslaved again.
If Pharaoh took them back as slaves, you can be sure that they will be taught a severe lesson—probably given a much heavier workload than before, and denial of whatever little comforts they used to have.
The Lord knows what you are ready for and what you aren’t capable of handling right now. Trust His timing, gladly receiving His teachings and training. You will avoid any pitfalls, and possess your inheritances at the right time when you are truly ready!
God works with His system of appointed times and seasons. Trying to insist on your own timing is what leads to heartbreak, disappointment, and unnecessary suffering. 過去40年裡,北極海冰層以每十年下降12%的速度在消退,這原本是氣候暖化給人類最顯著的訊號和警告,卻也成了另一個機會,一條經過北極海的北海航道(Northern Sea Route)橫空出世。
連結北歐與東北亞的海上貿易,北海航道比蘇伊士運河的路線要快30%,但由於需要破冰船的引導,北海航道當前成本頗高。最近因蘇伊士運河的堵塞,最早開發北海航道的俄羅斯又大力提倡,這也才發現,俄羅斯在北極的投入,已超出外界想像。
俄羅斯除了擁有全球最多的10艘核動力破冰船,且仍持續打造新的核動力破冰船隊,這不只是增加北海航道的商業價值,還有瞄準北極海域豐富的礦藏與油氣資源,與這裡的地緣戰略要塞。
在遭西方國家圍堵的嚴峻形勢下,迫使俄羅斯尋求戰略突破口,北極就成了一個重要方向。俄羅斯總統普丁近年來多次前往北極,更從今年1月1日起,擴編原本守衛北極海的北方艦隊成為俄羅斯的第五個軍區,下轄兩個北極旅,俱備長時間在北極的作戰能力。
而這個北極軍區,在蘇伊士運河堵塞之際,舉行一場代號「白熊-2021」的軍事科考演練,以科學論證在北極的軍事能力,其中一幕是三艘核戰略潛艇在指定的時間和300公尺半徑內
,同時浮上北極厚達一米半的海冰層,讓西方軍事專家驚豔,也讓美國方面相當緊張,因為也展現俄羅斯的核潛艇,在冰層下更為隱蔽的核打擊力量。
美國《商業內幕》雜誌就指出,不曾把北極視為重點戰略方向的美國,在北極的實力讓人尷尬。但美國也非無應對措施,川普任內企圖向丹麥買格陵蘭島,將軍事部署前推北極圈內,雖然遭丹麥政府否決,但與北約盟邦,重啟了1950年代在格陵蘭島的一座廢棄空軍基地,成為美軍最北的軍事據點,近年來也聯手北約盟邦在北極圈內展開多場聯合軍演,演練不同軍種,在極地環境下的協同作戰能力。
此外,美空軍在阿拉斯加已部署兩個中隊的F-35戰機。而在俄羅斯「白熊-2021」北極科考進行同時,美軍與加拿大在北極圈內,也展開代號「北方利刃」的空中軍演,驗證極地狀態下的作戰能力。
蘇伊士運河塞了6天,北海航道的價值再被凸顯,儘管北極是公認的國際公共財,但這一地區缺乏一個安全框架,來約束軍事化的趨勢,也讓競逐北極利益的軍事博弈,不斷升溫。

北極科考人員:「哇!那是好大一塊。」
北極的海冰層 ,正逐年減少。
Global News記者:「自1970年代以來,衛星已經向我們展示了北極冰帽在每年夏天都會融化,然後每個冬天的冰蓋都會增加。但在過去的40年中,美國NASA稱,夏季(冰帽)最低的紅線顯示,海冰正逐漸縮小,總體北極海冰每十年下降12%。」
這原本是氣候暖化給人類最顯著的訊號和警告,卻也成了另一個機會,隨著北極海冰層持續減少,一條北海航道(Northern Sea Route)橫空出世。
紀錄片《Sustainable Arctic shipping》 :「北海航線將北歐與東北亞相連,意味著可以直接在北極運輸貨物,這比現有蘇伊士運河的路線快30%,代表著航運的巨大節省。」
而這樣的航運時代已經來臨。當長榮貨輪卡在蘇伊士運河,俄羅斯趁機推銷北海航道,國家原子能公司(Rosatom)就在官方推特發文說,「卡在運河的,可以找我們破冰。」
而這家俄羅斯的國營企業,擁有全球最多的10艘核動力破冰船,其中最新的「北極號」,最大航速24節,破冰船殼據說是前蘇聯KV2坦克1.3米裝甲厚度的兩倍,船上裝備三台核反應堆,全開的狀態下,破冰厚度能達到6米。當然,因需要破冰船的引導,北海航道當前成本頗高,但俄羅斯仍持續打造新的核動力破冰船隊,不只是增加北海航道的商業價值,還有瞄準北極海域豐富的礦藏與油氣資源,與這裡的地緣戰略要塞。
俄羅斯第一頻道主播:「法蘭士約瑟夫群島是俄羅斯,乃至全世界最靠北的地區之一 ,再往北,就只有北極了,這個群島有100多個大小島嶼,其中最大的島嶼之一就是亞歷山德拉島,正是在這座島上,俄羅斯建造了可以稱得上是不可思議的建築,在那裡服役的軍人,也進行不可思議的訓練。」
俄羅斯三葉草基地軍官:「拿好槍,在任何天氣下都要完成任務。」
遭西方國家圍堵的嚴峻形勢下,迫使俄羅斯尋求戰略突破口,北極就成了一個重要方向。三叉形、四層建築,花了7年時間 ,在2016年啟用的三葉草基地,是俄羅斯在北極圈內6個軍事基地之一,象徵俄羅斯揮師北上,在北極展開新一輪的軍事部署。俄羅斯總統普丁,近年來多次前往北極,更從今年1月1日起,擴編原本守衛北極海的北方艦隊,成為俄羅斯的第五個軍區,下轄兩個北極旅,俱備長時間在北極的作戰能力,並設一支北極摩托化步兵旅,隨時對各個北極基地提供支援。
在裝備方面,俄羅斯對S-300防空導彈、山毛櫸野戰防空系統與道爾防空導彈等,進行特殊改裝,與北極的雷達網,共同構建北極方向的防禦體系。
俄羅斯第一頻道主播:「我軍的艦隊、航空兵與北極的發展,又增添了新的一頁,三艘潛艇在高緯度地區浮出水面,突破了冰層。」
而這一幕,讓西方軍事專家驚豔。俄軍三艘核戰略潛艇,在指定的時間和300公尺半徑內,同時浮上北極厚達一米半的海冰層。這項軍事訓練是代號「白熊-2021」北極科考行動的一部分,以科學論證在北極的軍事能力,也展現俄羅斯的核潛艇,在冰層下更為隱蔽的核打擊力量。
海軍司令員葉夫梅諾夫同時向普丁通報,軍方還完成潛艇海冰下的魚雷發射,2架米格-31戰機在極地進行空中加油並飛越北極點,另有一支北極摩托化旅分隊,在複雜氣象候條件和陌生地形中,完成戰術演練。
俄羅斯總統 普丁:「戰鬥訓練、科學研究和所有這些措施,證明了俄羅斯海軍在嚴酷的北極地區,作戰能力和戰備狀態。」

而美國軍方和輿論,對俄羅斯在北極的動作,已顯示出憂慮。

2018年10月,美軍杜魯門號航母戰鬥群27年來首次進入北極;而今年美國海軍部長簽發一份北極戰略藍圖時也說,美海軍將定期在鄰近俄羅斯的北極海域航行,以遏制俄羅斯的擴張。
此外,美空軍在阿拉斯加已部署兩個中隊的F-35戰機;而在俄羅斯「白熊-2021」北極科考進行同時,美軍與加拿大在北極圈內也展開代號「北方利刃」的空中軍演,驗證極地狀態下的作戰能力。

Every year, Mazu (the patron goddess of seafarers) sets off on a pilgrimage from her home at Zhenlan Temple in Taichung’s Dajia District. This is the biggest Mazu pilgrimage in Taiwan in terms of the number of official participating brigades, or processional teams. It also has the largest number of followers who spontaneously join the procession along the way. The route of the nine-day, eight-night procession follows the path of early immigrants as they spread out across Taiwan. Apart from revisiting historical paths, the procession also strengthens the faith of local believers and helps them gain a deeper understanding of the significant cultural value behind this event. This ancient and elaborate sacrificial rite is a precious cultural asset. In recent years, the scale of the event has grown, becoming a classic example of how folk religion evolves in response to societal changes. In recent years, Dajia’s Mazu Pilgrimage has been named one of the world’s three biggest religious festivals by the Discovery Channel, and UNESCO has included Mazu beliefs and customs on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
