閱讀與寫作需要銳利的心智,創意以及強大的自律。 這些數不盡的獨處時間是通往成功的唯一途徑,既便那終點只是稍縱既逝的喜悅。我猜你可能現在已經在覺得這些要求跟成為一個偉大的網球選手是一樣的。
很多人會覺得訝異,其實偉大的科學家跟偉大的網球選手,音樂家,喜劇演員,企業家有很多的相同之處。
你只要認真的工作,認真的玩耍,擁有高度自律,以及盡量的閱讀越多越好。日後你就能有特權去選擇你有熱情的未來工作,並且熱愛你所做的事。

Hi Savi,
I played a lot of tennis with your daddy when we were both students in the US. I am now a biology professor in Tunghai University focusing on biodiversity research. Seeing your interest in becoming a scientist, I have a few thoughts that I like to share with you. I consider myself a scientist and I have many friends who are scientists. What I am about to say may surprise you: The majority of time spent in most scientists’ work hours are reading and writing. Being a real scientist is to discover something that is either interesting or useful. Massive reading is the only way to “see” the “landscape” of knowns and unknowns. Only then after you can conduct research to find the answer. Being the first person in the world to know the answer to a question or discover an interesting question before it even exists is the coolest thing for a scientist. Scientists also need to write to convince people to invest their research and share their discoveries by convincing other scientists who might think otherwise. Both reading and writing require sharp mind, creativity and tremendous discipline. These countless hours of loneliness is the only path to enjoy the very brief moment of excitement in discovery. I guess you might start to think this is exactly like what it takes to become a great tennis player!! To many people’s surprise, there is so much in common in being a great scientist, a great tennis player or other various professions like musicians, comedians, businessmen and businesswomen, etc. Work hard and play hard, and be self-disciplined, read as much as you can, then you will have the privilege of choosing what you are passionate about in your future career and make a living by doing what you love to do.

Something you don't know about me,
I'm really ill-disciplined, hates routine and totally not a morning person. If it's up to me, I'll wake up at 12pm everyday, wake up to a full day of nothing on my schedule, laze on my bed in my messy hair and pyjamas until Deon comes home.
Ok, I'm glad i said that out loud. Because even i am feeling disgusted with that thought right now. Haha!
It doesn't help that all my life, my work schedule never allowed me to a fixed routine!
Ok... enough of justification and excuses for myself already! Haha
I guess growing up is about doing what is right vs what i want. So, I've been trying to wake up earlier and sleep earlier. I have also made a goal to workout and meditate everyday, and journal every alternate day. It's been fun and successful so far for the last 2 weeks!
At the end of the day, whatever the excuses and justifications may be, we are all responsible for our mental and physical health. "If you don't love yourself, how can you expect anyone to love you?" I always get so upset and angry when my partner doesn't take care of themselves, because if we want a lifetime of happiness together, if we want to travel the world hand in hand when we are old, we got to start investing in our mental and physical health now.
So setting these goals and adjusting my lifestyle is my way of committing to our future, it is my way of being responsible, it is my way of 'self-love'. We all can strive to be better. But dont forget to also practice self-compassion too! There's no need to blame youself for not following the routine religiously, just set an intention and try again tomorrow.

If you want to change your bad habits, without changing the core of
who you are...
It will never work.
You cannot outperform and outgrow your self-image. It is not about self-discipline, it is about self-image. It is the invisible force.
If you see yourself as someone who is lazy, guess what...You're lazy.
If you see yourself as someone who is focused, who is disciplined, who is hard working, guess what.... Your behaviours and habits will show.
