I joined the Singapore National Olympic Council and many in the sporting community to pay tribute to Dr Tan Eng Liang, who retired as vice-president of the SNOC yesterday.
Dr Tan served as SNOC vice-president for 28 years, but his service to the country extends far longer. His name is closely linked with sports. He represented Singapore in water polo on numerous occasions, including at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. But his contributions extended beyond sports – he served as Member of Parliament for River Valley from 1972 to 1980, and was Senior Minister of State at both the National Development and Finance Ministries.
Sports remained in his blood, and he never stopped developing and pushing Singapore’s athletes to new heights. He was Singapore’s Chef de Mission at 12 major Games, up until the 2015 Singapore SEA Games.
Eng Liang’s dedication and drive made him a legendary figure in Singapore’s sports scene. It has been a privilege to have known him for nearly 50 years. I wish him a very happy retirement! – LHL
