除了台灣選手相關的新聞，這陣子奧運引起我注意的另一件事，是美國體操王牌Simone Biles 為了身心健康考量，選擇退出女子個人全能項目決賽。

在越競爭的環境中，身心靈健康的狀況越容易被小看，也有越多人習於避談與隱藏。

然而，作為承擔全國期待的體育明星、身在奧運這樣高壓的場合，Biles仍能夠正視個人的精神需求，也選擇勇敢的把它表達出來——
身為愛面子、愛逞強、也總是逼緊自己的人，這個新聞讓我覺得很受鼓勵，也是很正面的一個示範。

雖然我們沒有放棄奧運比賽這種極端的狀況要面對，重視心理健康，其實從生活中的各種小選擇開始就可以了。
讓自己不舒服的事情就說不，讓自己開心放鬆的事情就多去實踐——每一個照顧身心的決定累積下來，就是讓自己過得更好的魔法喔✨

❤賀陳弘校長寫給全校教職員工生的一封信

各位同仁與各位同學，大家好！

疫情逐漸升高，政府剛剛宣布了全國進入第三級警戒，大家一定會感到憂心。我現在正在學校旺宏館，雖然已經在清華工作了30年，從來沒有看過學校碰到這個情形，但是我相信所有清華人一定可以度過這個難關。

學校從前天開始實施全面遠距教學、實體考試暫停兩週、研究生論文口試都可以線上進行；昨天開始，所有人車非因公務嚴格禁止入校；今天起，全校的同仁全面分組上班，同時加強環境清消，我們一直維護著一個安全的校園。

同學們如果必須在學校中做畢業論文的研究，一定要遵守室內空間五人以下，做到實名制、戴口罩、勤洗手。

不論大家身在學校或是家中，請每個人比平時更多加保重自己健康，照顧身邊親人，彼此提醒減少外出，降低社區的傳染風險。

在疫情中我們特別掛念一些生活發生困難的同學。這些同學因為家境的緣故，原本就需要在校內外打工維持生活，疫情使得打工的機會都沒有了，生活怎麼辦？學校在去年疫情開始的時候，曾經推動專案「COVID-19 中的愛」，募集一筆捐款，幫助受到疫情打擊的同學。如果你知道有這樣的同學，請轉告他把困難告訴我們，生輔組一定會幫助同學們度過難關。

在疫情中，雖然我們覺得生活中有許多不如意與憂慮，但是我相信，我們永遠有能力幫助身邊比我們更加困難的人。

今天新竹市街頭和校園顯得空蕩，雖然是在夏天，卻有些蕭瑟的感覺，我們正一起面臨一段艱難的時光。相信只要你我好好照顧自己、互相伸出援手、彼此提醒，堅持紀律，心中有愛，一定可以很快度過疫情。希望能夠在清華園中，鳳凰花依然燦爛的時候，很快再見到你。

A letter from President Hocheng

Greetings to my dear colleagues and students,

The pandemic situation is gradually spreading, and the government has just announced that the entire country will be entering into Level 3 epidemic alert. I am sure you are all worried about this situation. Currently, in my office in the Macronix Building, I am facing perhaps the most difficult moment in my thirty years of service at National Tsinghua University. Although these circumstances are unprecedented, I have complete confidence that our Tsinghua community will be able to pull together and get through this difficult time.

Our university has implemented complete remote learning and temporarily suspended in-person examinations for two weeks beginning May 17th. In addition, oral defenses by graduate students will be conducted online. Effective yesterday (May 18th), all non-NTHU personnel are strictly prohibited from entering campus without an official reason. Starting today, all staff members will be divided into separate work-groups, and we will vigorously maintain a safe campus with enhanced disinfection measures.

If students have to conduct research for their theses, please strictly abide by the rule that indoor spaces cannot exceed 5 people. At the same time, please adhere to real-name registration, wear a facial mask at all times, and wash your hands frequently.

Regardless of whether you are on campus or at home, please pay attention to your health more than usual. Take care of your relatives and decrease the risk of community infection by reminding each other to refrain from going out unless absolutely necessary.

During this pandemic, we are particularly concerned about students experiencing financial difficulties. Due to their family circumstances, these students originally needed to work on or off campus to support themselves. Now that their work opportunities have been suspended, I dare not imagine how harshly the pandemic is affecting their livelihoods. When the epidemic began last year, our university initiated the project "Love in COVID-19" to raise funds to help these students in need. If you happen to know such classmates, please ask them to contact our Student Assistance Division, and we will do our best to support them and help them get through this difficult period.

Even though we have faced numerous inconveniences and experienced many worries during the pandemic, I strongly believe that we are always capable of helping out those around us who are in greater need.

Although the streets of Hsinchu City and the NTHU campus seem empty and barren this summer, I want to assure you that we will face this difficult time together. As long as you and I take good care of ourselves, are willing to extend a helping hand, remind each other about safety, adhere to the regulations, and, most importantly, have never-ending love in our hearts, we will prevail against the epidemic. I look forward to seeing you again soon, when the phoenix flowers bloom in our Tsinghua Garden.

In Taiwan, two out of every ten people in poverty are children. According to statistics from the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families, approximately 4-6% of children will be born into families suffering from poverty. They don’t have enough food and nutrition, lack protection and care, and grow up to fall into the vicious cycle of poverty. “There is no simple solution to poverty.” From the long-term observation of the YongLin Education Foundation, 100 children have 100 different stories. There is no simple solution to their problem. “You have to help every child achieve his or her happiness.” Get close to them, listen to them, and lend them a helping hand.

The 23-year-old Liang-chin Chen once worked four jobs as a child. When in junior high school, his parents failed in their business venture and were frequent by loan sharks who often came to collect debts. They borrowed NT$300,000, but with rolling interests, their debt accumulated into the millions. His family lived in metal shacks, and all their hard-earned cash was given to underground loan sharks. “I earn my own living expenses, and I went to sell mantou (Chinese steamed buns) at moving night markets for NT$5 apiece. When business was good, I would earn NT$400, and the whole family would be able to fill their bellies the next day.” Once when he was in the seventh grade, a gang member came to his house and scolded him: If you don’t have money, why do you bother to study? Why not go out and make some money?!

23歲的陳良進年幼時曾同時打4份。讀國中時，父母因為生意失敗、家道中落，三不五時就有黑道上門討債，借了30萬利息滾出幾百萬債務，全家人住在鐵皮屋裡，辛苦賺的錢都繳給地下錢莊。「我自己的生活費自己賺，到許多流動夜市賣饅頭，賣掉一顆賺5元，生意好時一個晚上賺400元，全家人隔天就能吃飽，」陳良進說，國一時黑道上門，指著他罵：「沒錢讀什麼書，為什麼不出去賺錢？」

In this environment, Liang-chin Chen could not care less about school work, focusing only on working part-time jobs to make ends meet. He lived this way until his high school teacher convinced him that “studying holds the greater value” by showing him how he can receive scholarships through good grades. It’s more cost-effective than selling mantou. Liang-chin Chen climbed from the bottom of a remote high school to the top of his class in a national university. His university even helped him pay back the loan sharks through scholarships. He is currently a postgraduate student at National Cheng Kung University. This year, Liang-chin Chen is teaching elders how to exercise in Tainan’s remote areas. “I don’t have the money to contribute back to society and to help others, so I will use my skills and abilities to help elders in the community.” Liang-chin Chen is also a lecturer for Fubon Charity Foundation’s Youth from Disadvantaged Family Program.

在這種環境下，除了每天打工賺錢溫飽外，學業上自暴自棄，上學只為了中午能吃到營養午餐。直到高中遇到良師跟他說「讀書CP值更高」，還教他計算成績多少可以換取多少獎學金，比賣饅頭划算。讓他從山上放牛班的學生變成國立大學第一名畢業，大學還靠獎學金幫家裡還完地下錢莊的債，現在就讀成大的研究所。陳良進今年到台南偏鄉教老人運動，「自己沒有錢回饋社會、幫助別人，只好用一技之長回饋社區幫助老人家。」最近陳良進也接受中華人之幼協會邀請，擔任講師。

Always smiling and speaking Taiwanese with elders, Liang-chin Chen can empathize with poverty-stricken children in remote regions. “I was a kid who grew up in a metal shack, but I met so many remarkable people who helped me during my studies. Do not be ashamed of your roots. Work to achieve your goals 10, 20 years from now, and you can do it. I am a living example of what one can accomplish.”

陳良進就是該協會邀請合作留在台南家鄉貢獻的範例。總是面帶笑容，跟長輩講得一口好台語的陳良進，可以理解偏鄉貧困孩子的處境，「我是住在鐵皮屋長大的小孩，學習過程中遇到大大小小的貴人，因此長大後想回饋，也能看到不同的世界，」他說，走入偏鄉會跟貧窮兒說，不用害怕出身環境不好，要比拚的是10年、20年後的成就，他自己就是活生生的示範。
