The lions are back.
Stephen and Stitt are not just ordinary bronze lions, the 85-year old lions still bear injuries from the Second World War and the social unrest in 2020.
The lions have guarded the entrance of HSBC headquarters in Central since 1935.
During the Second World War, the two lions were sent to Japan to be melted down, but were saved at the sudden end of war. An American sailor recognised the lions in a dockyard in Osaka in 1945 and the lions were rescued and restored to their original positions in October 1946. Bullet holes can still be found on Stephen’s left flank. (𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰 𝟺)
During the protest on New Year’s Day in 2020, the lions were sprayed with red paint and set on fire. They were removed from public view for restoration since then for the third time in their history.
The lions are back on public view after first phase of restoration works. Welcome back. Many visit the lions today, taking photos and touching his head and paws.
Full restoration can be done only when British experts can fly to Hong Kong.

78 years ago, on 25 December 1941, Hong Kong has entered the darkest period in history. The Hong Kong Governor - Sir Mark Young surrendered in person and signed the Instrument of Surrender on the third floor of The Peninsula Hotel. Hong Kong fell into the hand of Japan for three years and eight months after 18 days of fighting in the Battle of Hong Kong.
78 years later, on 24 December 2019, the first tear gas was fired outside the same hotel. Police warned people for taking part in an illegal assembly in Tsim Sha Tsui, the most popular destination for festivities. The street was filled with tear gas and rubber bullets. Toddler was tear gassed. Reporters got shot. Many was injured and arrested. Two protesters fell from height when chased by police. The 6-hour chaos started soon after the first tear gas was fired. The familiar scenes of violence reappeared again on this Christmas Eve.
Even if you are just doing last minute Christmas shopping in the afternoon, you don’t even dare to talk loudly as your every words and move are like monitored by the large number of undercover cops stationed and patrolling in the mall.
