If there's one (more) thing I love about my country is the abundance of five-foot ways.
What they basically are, are covered walk-ways attached to buildings (usually shophouses) that were used to sell goods and wares and protect customers from the heat.
Originating in Batavia (now Jakarta), the trend continued on to Singapore under the British East India Co.
While planning the city, Raffles specified that Five Foot Ways be included along the street to give regularity to townscape and hide shop business within the building.
The land leaseholder had to provide public walkways of certain width (Five Feet) in front of their shops and houses. As they constructed the second floor above the public walkways, it formed roofed continuous walkways along the street.
Now, these Five-Foot Ways are such a welcome sight when wandering the city. They protect you from the rain and heat and give us a glimpse into the past.
