This is me, on the second day after I came back from my short Batam trip over the weekend last year. For every overseas trip, I make it a point to buy travel insurance because you never know when you need it. BUT, for this particular Batam trip, it slipped my mind completely. I mean after all, it’s just a short over-the-weekend trip – why would I need insurance right?
End up I was diagnosed with dengue. I "checked-in" to a hospital and spent my next 6 days there. THANKFULLY, I did have my own hospitalisation insurance. However, it only covers up to 90% and the remaining 10% has to be paid by cash or Medisave. I know of many people who are at my age and still haven't planned for the future. Just because we are still young and strong doesn’t mean age will not catch up. Our body is just like a machine - over time, wear and tear happens. We just have to be ready and be prepared for it. And assuming responsibility over our own well-being, this I call #adulting.
So I just want to share a couple of tips for the growing-ups:
1. Make sure you are sufficiently insured.
2. Use your Medisave wisely by staying at affordable wards.
3. If you’re a Singaporean/PR, you’re automatically covered under MediShield Life, which helps to pay a huge chunk of your hospital bills if you haven't don’t already know.
