聖誕老人的由來－聖尼古拉斯

聖誕老人送禮物給孩子的概念衍生自聖尼古拉斯(Saint Nicholas)，連聖誕老人的英文(Santa Claus)，都是由他的名字演變而來的。相傳尼古拉斯在西元3世紀出生於Patara(今天的土耳其)，最高職位曾擔任希臘地區的主教。

尼古拉斯是一位極好心的主教，也是當時非常受歡迎的聖者，因此流傳許多關於他的神蹟故事。傳說有個酒吧餐廳的惡老闆，把3個貧窮孩子浸泡在充滿鹽巴的大啤酒桶中，後來尼古拉斯懲罰這位惡劣老闆，並幫助3個已死的孩子復活。另外一個傳說，是關於貧窮父親想賣掉3個女兒作奴隸的故事，尼古拉斯連續3天將金幣從窗戶丟入他們家中，3名女兒因此免於被賣的惡運。從此，聖尼古拉斯成為孩童的守護者。

因為聖尼古拉斯的幫助，三個女孩才免於變成奴隸，其實目前我們心中聖誕老人的形象，是後人所創造的，並透過可口可樂廣告的放送才為後人所知，有了身穿紅衣，和藹臉龐並留著白鬍子的聖誕老公公的形象，但實際上聽說這位聖尼古拉斯本人是位瘦削、嚴肅的主教，跟我們心中聖誕老公公的形象其實是大為不同的呢！
