//Social media has become as central to free speech as town meeting halls, newspapers and television networks were in prior generations. The internet is the new public square. In recent years, however, Big Tech platforms have become increasingly brazen and shameless in censoring and discriminating against ideas, information and people on social media—banning users, deplatforming organizations, and aggressively blocking the free flow of information on which our democracy depends.//
//No longer are Big Tech giants simply removing specific threats of violence. They are manipulating and controlling the political debate itself. Consider content that was censored in the past year. Big Tech companies banned users from their platforms for publishing evidence that showed the coronavirus emerged from a Chinese lab, which even the corporate media now admits may be true. //
//Perhaps most egregious, in the weeks after the election, Big Tech blocked the social-media accounts of the sitting president. If they can do it to me, they can do it to you—and believe me, they are.//
//Meanwhile, Chinese propagandists and the Iranian dictator spew threats and hateful lies on these platforms with impunity.//
//Democrats in Congress are exploiting this leverage to coerce platforms into censoring their political opponents. In recent years, we have all watched Congress haul Big Tech CEOs before their committees and demand that they censor “false” stories and “disinformation”—labels determined by an army of partisan fact-checkers loyal to the Democrat Party. As the cases of fellow plaintiffs Ms. Horton, Dr. Victory and the Michael family demonstrate, in practice this amounts to suppression of speech that those in power do not like.//
// Big Tech and traditional media entities formed the Trusted News Initiative, which essentially takes instructions from the CDC about what information they need to “combat.” The tech companies are doing the government’s bidding, colluding to censor unapproved ideas.//
//Through these lawsuits, I intend to restore free speech for all Americans—Democrats, Republicans and independents. I will never stop fighting to defend the constitutional rights and sacred liberties of the American people.//

The EU must arm itself against disinformation, censorship and spying
The COVID-19 crisis has been used by the Chinese government to divide the EU via disinformation on social media, false statement by Chinese officials and propaganda. This active manipulation of the public opinion undermines trust and sows discord. The EU must introduce a more robust strategy to counter these aggressive disinformation campaigns and impose costs on countries that try to divide the EU and harmour interests. This includes the establishment of a ‘Far-East Strat Com Task Force’ as part of the EEAS, that will identify, monitor and counter the disinformation campaigns and nation-specific actions coming from China.
Not only Chinese disinformation campaigns are worrying. The Chinese regime also tried to censor publications by the European External Action Service and the EU-ambassadors. We condemn the aggressive propaganda and offensive “wolf warrior diplomacy” that led to continuous insults against elected Members, Member States and the EU as well as the cyber-attacks and attempts at espionage which do not create a trustful environment for dialogue.
We stress that the freedom of speech one of the most important pillars of a democracy. We call on our leaders to ensure that the European Union never gives into this kind of pressure.
China implements an active surveillance of European elites, which include current and former officials, their family members, academics, promising young professionals and other public figures. Among its attempts is to affect the decision-making in the EU and its Member States and to recruit targeted persons for spying activities. Awareness about these actions needs to be raised and espionage activities must be investigated and prevented by the responsible security institutions.

PTT is one of the most open social media platforms in the Chinese language. Though it’s not more populous than Facebook, it’s arguably more impactful than Facebook here in Taiwan. It’s a reflection of Taiwan's spirited democracy, and it’s used heavily as a source for local journalists.
We speak with two INDSR researchers on a year-long project, “A Pilot Study on PTT in the Context of Influence Operations” (批踢踢影響力作戰前導研究)which attempts to identify CCP state actors on the platfor. The researchers are Oddis J.F. Tsai (Policy Analyst at the Division of Defense Strategy and Resources) and Dr. Jui-Ming Hung (Assistant Research Fellow at the Division of Defense Strategy and Resources).
The paper lays out mechanics and - through quantitative analysis - identifies types of suspect behavior on the world’s largest non-commercial, forum-based, open-source online bulletin board system in the Chinese language. This interview was recorded in January 2021 after the paper was published by INDSR.
Today’s host is J.R. Wu - a non-resident advisor at INDSR (Institute for National Defense and Security Research) in Taiwan. Wu is a former journalist with nearly two decades of media experience in the US and Asia. She has led news bureaus for Reuters and Dow Jones.
