We did it! 🏆 1st place at the IFBB Pro League Tsunami Cup in Italy 🇮🇹 This also makes him the first ever Malaysian 🇲🇾 to qualify for Mr. Olympia. 🙌 For those of you who are familiar with bodybuilding, competing in Mr. Olympia is THE most prestigious show and a dream of many bodybuilding athletes. 💪🏽
.
Since the first day I got to know him, he’s always told me that his goal is to be the first Malaysian to go to Olympia. It felt like a tough journey and sometimes almost impossible. We had to travel far for every show as there aren’t as many shows in Asia compared to Europe or the US, and honestly it would cost a lot every time.
.
Since covid happened, he has not competed in 2 years as we can’t travel out. Planning this trip and getting all the approvals took us more than 2 months but he was determined that he wanted to go for it. And so we did, one step at a time, not knowing what to expect.
.
Winning this competition didn’t come without its own hurdles. Literally an hour before the competition, he had a really bad back spasm and he could not even walk. He was lying down on the floor and the organisers were so concern they wanted to call the ambulance and take him to the hospital. Of course, he refused. But the pain was getting worse and there’s no way he could perform on stage. I mean he could not even stand straight and flex his abs. Nothing was showing. 😑
.
Somehow, he met 3 of his fans while going to the toilet and they rushed to the pharmacy to get some pain killers. Thank god the show was also delayed by 2 hours. That gave him time to slowly recover and somehow he managed to perform his best.
.
Sometimes, when things are meant to be and when you put the effort and visualise what you want, the universe has its way to challenge you but also align everything for you. One thing we also say to each other is do your best in everything you set your mind to, and remember to have fun! Otherwise, what’s the point?

I’ve spent the past 4 months training in a lot of gyms, and watching hundreds of people in different countries and environments train got me thinking “if I had to give them ALL one piece of advice, what would it be?” 🤔
-
I settled on slowing down their reps. I don’t know why there is such a wild obsession with “explosivity” 🤷🏻♂️ It’s like everyone has forgotten the equation F=ma, and lost the ability to observe what happens to joint control when people try to move weight quicker than they’re capable of coordinating 🧐
-
I would love to go up to the tonnes of people throwing weight around as quickly as they can and ask them what they think they’re getting out of it❓
-
The only possible argument could be that they’re training for the “athletic carry over” of moving quickly (a separate topic of suspect science that I won’t go into now), but it’s very hard to believe that such large portions of each gym consider themselves “athletes” and aren’t just training for improved strength, quality of life and aesthetics 😎
-
If anyone is under the impression that making the intended muscles contract and produce force under control at a high intensity without “explosivity” is not getting them the same gains as faster movements, please let me assure you that is not the case☝🏽
-
5️⃣ Things to consider with high acceleration movements:
- Forces at transitions increase dramatically, reducing control of the joints that aren’t meant to be moving.
- Stress placed on connective tissue to manage what muscles can’t increases.
- Resistance profiles get changed (and rarely for the better)
- “Range of motion” becomes harder to control, and thus less regular
- Load placed on muscles becomes acceleration-dependent, harder to track & thus only possible to gradually, consistently increase if you have advanced equipment to measure this with.
-
I’m not saying bouncing out of the bottom of reps and swinging into “full range” will be the death of your joints ☠️ or get you no gains. (To varying degrees) our bodies are resilient & adaptable and regardless of what you do contractions are still taking place and force is still being produced 💪🏽
-
I’m just saying it rarely makes much sense.

⛰ Colorado Dreaming 💭
-
If the weather holds up this week, my Aunt and I plan on climbing Pen Y Fan in the Breacon Beacons, apparently the highest mountain in Southern Britain 👀 Something tells me it won’t be quite the same as hiking red rocks over Boulder, but honestly I enjoy hiking anywhere that the temperature is at least double figures centigrade 😎
-
Last night at the BANFF Film Festival there were tonnes of inspiring videos of people going on crazy exploratory missions that test their will and physical abilities 🤯 I’m not sure I’ll ever fancy skiing down K2, but I do love the challenging outdoor stuff. Kinda blows my mind that anyone doesn’t and makes me wonder how so many of us humans have conditioned ourselves into a habit of laziness that we prioritise over adventure and testing ourselves 🤔
-
Gotta say it had me missing my weekend morning trail runs with the Alcoholic Athletes @jakemowson & @chrisjgreenough 🏃♂️🧗♂️ I can’t wait for that to become a regular fixture our lives again. In the meantime, I’ll just see what challenge the biggest hill I can find wherever I happen to be can throw at me 🤷🏻♂️

This Mind Movie is focused on “Believing in Yourself”. Mind Movies are short videos filled with positive affirmations, inspiring visual images and motivating music. By watching this mind movie, it will assist in a reprograming our subconscious mind (just like updating the OS system in our brain). The process is called “visualization” and is applied by many of the world's most successful people - from CEOs and billionaires to athletes and musicians – to fuel their life with power and get their mind to perform at their peak each day.
Just want to take this opportunity to thank Dr Joe Dispenza for showing us the power of our minds in his book "Becoming Supernatural". Highly recommended!

Training and Nutrition Around The Menstrual Cycle with Ben Siong
A really informative chat with fitness and health expert Ben Siong. For all my sisters, who have always questioned bout why they have irregular periods, why they bloat, why they have painful periods, what's the possible cause for bleeding more than two weeks here's a video that will help explain those questions!
The human body is very complicated and my dear sisters, ours is even more complicated cause we have a thing called the period. Ben is one of the few coaches who takes the time to not only understand the physiology of the body but also the mind which is incredibly crucial. I do hope you take away valueable information from this video, because Ben's had shared a lot of his expertise during this 1 hour. :)
Questions Timestamps:
1:50 We hear a lot from old folks that women shouldn’t lift lower body higher than stomach for optimal reproductive system. Truth or myth?
8:25 Should we train during period?
10:15 Pre period - what to eat to avoid bloating (if ur vegan or vegetarian) so u still have the energy to lift weights?
15:16 What exercises to do pre period so that during menses it’s less painful?
16:55 Why do some cycles end quicker for instance as quick as 4 days? Should she consult the gynae?
21:00 My Personal encounter of bleeding 4 months straight, what would have been the response for excessive bleeding?
24:00 Brief chat on understanding PCOS and PCO
29:27 In a paper "Preliminary Evidence for a Window of Increased Vulnerability to Sustain a Concussion in Females: A Brief Report" the author states that declining or low levels of estrogen and progesterone (specifically in the late luteal phase and first two days of menstruation) can reduce neuroprotection and blunt recovery time from traumatic brain injury symptoms (i.e. concussions). Would those decreased levels of hormones, and reduced neuroprotection also impact CNS recovery? And would female athletes have to then avoid highly taxing sessions/peaking periods during this time frame?
37:11 I've read that lower back pain during menstruation is caused by the uterus swelling which can create pressure on the uterosacral ligaments and lead to pain in the lower back and pelvis. Is this accurate? If so should females generally avoid deadlifts/front squats/lower back intensive exercises during this period? Should they be left out entirely, or replaced by something else?
38:21 Besides the supplementation of magnesium and iron, are there other ways we should change the way we eat around our cycles?
39:48 Personally, I do workout during this period of time & it does make me feel better.
However, I realised that if I perform very high intensity workout on the first two days of my period, I tend to have lesser flow for the month. I feel completely well & healthy but I’m not sure if that’s something I should be worried about
41:53: I have irregular period, in that case what type of training and nutrition I should opt for coach?

Lower Body Strength is paramount for basketball players who are looking to produce more force for jumping, landing, cutting and stopping on a dime. Today we are going to talk about 5 of the important lower body exercises that players and coaches need to implement in order to have well rounded and effective strength and performance program.
When thinking about exercises to prescribe for basketball players, we need to think about the risk and reward ratio. Basketball players are usually not built like other athletes when it comes to levers and therefore we need to think about what exercises works best for their body type.
Our favourite lower body exercises that will take you to the next level are:
1.) Rear Foot Elevated Split Squats and Split squat variations
2.) Trap Bar Deadlift
3.) Pure Single Leg Squat Variation
4.) Lunges in 3 planes of motion
5.) Hip Thrust Variation
