a great deal, a great many
這一對短語都表示“許多”、“大量”之意,涵義並無區別,主要是用法不同。
A great deal 常與不可數名詞連用;a great many則與可數名詞的複數形式連用,它們的區別與 much 和 many 的區別相同。
A great deal 的後面接名詞時要加 of; a great many則不用of。a great deal(或many)和 a good deal(或many)通用, 但前者的語氣比後者重。在口語裏,常用a deal 代替 a great (of good) deal。
As the new year is approaching, we have a great deal of preparation work to do.
隨着新年即將來到,我們有大量的預備工作要做。
The High Island Reservoir can store a great deal of water.
萬宜水庫能蓄藏大量的水。
There are a great many trees and flowers in the botanical garden.
植物公園裏有許多樹木和花草。
He has contributed a great many articles on education to the South China Morning Post.

順便講一句,a lot of 也表示“許多”、“大量”的意思,但它比較口語化,其後既可接可數名詞,又可接不可數名詞。例如: a lot of books (letters, flies): a lot of time (money, work) 。
另一點值得注意的是, plenty 與 a lot, a great deal, a large amount 的涵義有所不同。plenty 突出表示“足夠”之意,但它所指的東西並不一定很多。例如,某人準備坐火車去深圳,他看了看錶,說道:“We've plenty of time”。他的意思是“現在到九龍火車站還有足夠的時間,不必着急”,這裏所指的“足夠”時間可能是一刻鐘,而不是一兩個小時。又如,有個遠方客人來探望你,你想留他吃頓便飯,但不知道是否有菜,你把食櫥打開一看,說道:“Oh, we've plenty of food”。這裏的plenty也是表示“足夠”之意,菜不一定很多,可能只有一兩碟菜,但已足夠招待客人吃頓便飯了。
最後尚需補充一句,a great deal還可用作狀語。例:Our patient is a great deal better today.

★★☆ Subject-Verb Agreement (大陸稱主謂一致性) by Alex 王梓沅老師 ★★☆
大家國中時都學過, 動詞要不要加s, 是由前面的主詞決定. 上了高中以後, 這樣的觀念, 尤其在寫作文當中, 也是一再被強調 (這個規則雖然因為被認為 "理所當然" 已經不是教學主軸, 但因學生錯誤實在太多, 高中老師必須一再強調). 讓人驚訝的是, 其實一直到TOEFL甚至GRE, GMAT都會持續犯 (commit the error persistently).
因此下面整理了Subject-Verb Agreement的幾個規則, 對大家的英文會友實質的幫助！ 不要認為這個東西只對寫作有幫助, 對這東西有正確的概念也會對讀複雜的句子解析時有幫助喔 :)
1. There be 的 be 是單還是複, 是由後面的主詞決定
Ex: There exists a heated debate over...
(後面是a heated debate, 所以前面 exist要加s)
2. 用 Ving 或是 To V當作主詞時, 後面動詞要加 s (除非有用 and 聯繫兩件事)
Ex: Playing video games is fun. (別被games唬)
3. One of...的後面動詞要加s; three of, five of...當然不用
Ex: One of my friends likes to go jogging in the morning.
(別被 friends唬)
4. 記得關代後的動詞要不要s是前面主詞決定
Ex: It is Peter that likes to go jogging in the morning.
5. half of, plenty of, part of + 主詞 --> 後面的動詞是由主詞的countability 所決定
Plenty of information has been provided for us.
(information恆常不可數, 要數請用 a piece of)

1+1等於二: 在 Both A and B的狀況
Ex: Both Tina and I like to go shopping.
1+1不等於二: as well as, together with, besides, rather than
Ex: John, rather than Peter, loves sweets.
7. 遠親不如近鄰
用either...or..., not only...but also, neither...nor...的連接詞連接兩個名詞當主詞時, 記得動詞是跟者後面的名詞
Not only you but also I am planning to study abroad.
Neither Peter nor my sister likes to play the piano.
8. Each, every (everyone, everybody, everything), another, something (someone, somebody), anything (anybody, anyone)....後面動詞恆常要有s
Ex: Everyone has his or her own dream.
Ex: I want to find someone who really likes me.
最近疫情已經從亞洲向全球開始擴散，當初一開始聽到時還以為是小事，可是當事情發展至今我覺得是時候以我的微薄之力發聲了。做了這首歌不是為了給大家帶來無謂的希望（畢竟這類的歌已經夠多了），而是想試著讓我們稍微反思並且意識到在災難面前所有爭論都是無意義的。此外近期除了這次疫情也發生了很多其他的災害，也希望我們不要無視這些大自然的警告，而是從你我開始避免未來同樣的事件重演。最後還是要向災區的醫護人員致敬，帶著這份決不畏懼的精神，他們才是真正戰場上的英雄。
Recently the virus has been spreading not only across Asia, but also around the world. And just like everyone else, I wasn't expecting such a huge impact at first. Now realizing how wrong I was, I've decided to speak up about the situation. One thing I'd like to make clear is that my intention with this song isn't to provide any kind of hope—as they've already existed everywhere—, but instead to try and make us reflect and re-evaluate ourselves, which may hopefully lead to the realization that any argument at this point is meaningless. Moreover, aside from this outbreak, there are plenty incidents of natural disasters happening lately as well. This song also serves as a reminder for us to not neglect these warnings so we could prevent the future crises. Finally, to all the medical staff involved in this battle, we must salute you as you are the real heroes and deserve our wholehearted respect!
