BLASTING THROUGH BLOCKS
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Three blocks I’ve heard lately, and three blocks I know all too well. Let’s talk about them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💭 “What do they want?” — When it comes to sharing our talents and gifts, it’s easy to feel stuck, discouraged, and uninspired when we look outside of ourselves for inspiration and direction. Afraid of naysayers or doing the wrong thing, we stop trusting ourselves and we start filling someone else’s void. I find it more useful and satisfying to meet my own void. To look at my own mess. To peer into what I believe to be true, and then to wonder, “what do I have to say about this?”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💭 “But what will they think?” — Ah, yes... the fear of judgment. I think the better question to ask is, “when someone doesn’t like or appreciate what I’m doing, how will I respond?” Because we can’t create for everyone and it’s impossible to please all. Trying to do so is what keeps us from expressing our true selves. We are all entitled to our own tastes, and I like to remember that judgments tell me more about the preferences and personality of the person making the judgment rather than the one being judged. This is why the question I always come back to is: “What do I think of this?”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💭 “What if it doesn’t work out?” — When I notice myself thinking or saying this, I’ll ask myself, “Do you really want to know if it will fully and entirely work out?!” The answer is usually “no” because that sounds incredibly boring. Craving a sense of control and certainty, however, is very human. The truth is, it probably *won’t* work out how we imagined. At least not at first. But what do we stand to lose by not trying? And what do we stand to gain, even if it doesn’t work? (Hint: everything.) Most things I have tried didn’t work out how I expected. Instead, they sent me on a wild and wondrous journey that I couldn’t have known or imagined before I began. When I embrace the mystery and trust the unfolding, it often turns out even *better* because of who I become in the process. Success is walking the path. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
