Instagram is full of celebrity trainers working with athletes, posting videos of them doing all these wonderfully creative movements involving weights that look like snippets from whatever sport it is they do. They get loads of views and traction because they look explosive and relevant... but are they effective? 🤔
-
In sport we’re required to produce contractions against resistance in various directions, but the increased load of an implement is always downwards ⬇️ apart from inertial forces and unless it’s a cable or band. Even then, purely from a direction of resistance, I look at most of these sports-emulating movements and wonder about their applicability.
-
Then there’s the matter of my previous tweet. Stronger muscles produce better contractions 💪🏽 More stable conditions allow muscles to get better at practicing producing more force. All of these wildly dynamic, complicated movements have limitations on the amount of force that can be produced because of the stifling instability and distractions in play 🤹🏻♂️
-
There’s this strange thought process perpetuated on the internet that training individual movements somehow makes you worse at coordinated or “integrated” movements, but personally I find that quite insulting 😢 Someone is genuinely going to tell me that by getting better at executing individual components my brain is so stupid that it will get worse at putting them all together? 🥴 yeah... nah.
-
It’s often justified by the “functionality” of explosivity 💥 ok, but muscles produce contractile force. Force = mass x acceleration. If you train moving a lot of mass slowly, how does that not have a carry-over? And when working with someone whose joints take an absolute hammering with all of their ACTUAL sports-specific training, is dealing with the shear loading, unpredictability and deceleration components of sports-resembling training what they really need? 🧐
-
It doesn’t add up to me, but it makes for an interesting conversation so have at it in the comments below 🤷🏻♂️
-
P.S. Correlation doesn’t equal causation. Just because a trainer works with someone talented, doesn’t mean it’s their methods that are causing their success 👀

Happy New Breath, everyone! I’m excited to announce that this week, New Breath Foundation is distributing $130,000 in grants to twelve community-based organizations to decrease violence against the Asian American community, promote cross-racial solidarity, and advance effective alternatives to criminalization.
I’m very thankful to everyone who has invested in this initial round to support the incredible work everyone is doing across the country. We also appreciate the individuals who utilize their public platforms to raise awareness and contribute. We especially want to thank actor Daniel Wu (@thatdanielwu) for being one of the first supporters to kickstart this fund.
These grants are part of a new collaboration with the East Bay Community Foundation (@eastbaycf) and other philanthropic partners.
NBF grew out of the grassroots movements to end mass incarceration, address immigration/deportation issues, and advance racial justice and solidarity. We hope to build long-term infrastructure to advance movements for equity and justice.
This is just the beginning. I look forward to sharing more soon.

(The philosophy of the display of signs in the Countryside)
故此郊野公園告示牌需要有效、不突兀同點到即止(effective, discreet and adequate for their purpose)。
文件特別指出,好多警告類告示,其實都無實際功用(many cautionary signs come into this category)。
文件提及,隨著郊野公園設施日漸豐富,告示牌亦會越來越多,但必須理性規劃,否則結果必然係混亂,會出現無效、核突、低俗嘅告示(unless this is done in a rational way the result maybe chaotic and the environment may be affronted by signs which are ineffective, vulgar and ugly)。
文件又提及,一件好嘅郊外設施應只需要最少嘅維修(should require a minimum of maintenance)。

Episode 3 - The Power of Attitude & Lower Body Workout
Mindset:
I can honestly say today was a lot harder as I felt very demotivated in the moment before going to the gym, and worse is that I gotta train some hardcore LEGS! However I had to snap myself out of it and bring out a positive Attitude in order to switch my Reality. So I took the time i needed to prepare my mind, and do it
Workout:
I've never trained legs twice a week, as I always thought that by loading it as much as I can in 1 session is more effective than splitting it into 2, however research has shown that if you trained legs twice a week you are more likely to build up more Lean Muscle Mass, I'll be updating to you on how I feel on the changes, and hopefully you can also try it out!
Hope you guys enjoyed this episode!
