A relentless Bethel High School defense ended Hampton's 14-year run of Peninsula District football titles, sparking the unbeaten Bruins to a 9-3 victory and the 1991 championship Friday night.
A standing room-only crowd in excess of 10,000 at Darling Stadium saw Bethel combine blitzing tactics to pressure Hampton quarterback Fred Brown and aggressive pass defense to settle the battle of unbeaten teams.
Allen Iverson's 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kelly Rodgers broke a 3-3 deadlock with 4:57 left in the third period.
The Bethel defense, which held Hampton without a touchdown for the first time in 38 games, snuffed two later Hampton drives in Bruin territory.
The Crabbers (9-1 district, 8-1 overall) threatened a third time, but couldn't beat the clock as time expired with them on the Bethel 10.
''We were determined to put pressure on Brown because he hurt us so much throwing the ball last year,'' Bethel coach Dennis Kozlowski said. ''We did that with the combination of blitzes and excellent coverage by the secondary. Coach Skip Bouchard did an excellent job of mixing the coverages.''
Both teams advance to next Friday's Eastern Region playoffs, Bethel as the second-seeded team in Division 5 and Hampton as the third-seeded squad in Division 6.
Bethel (10-0, 9-0) will host either Indian River or Norcom of the Southeastern District, depending on the outcome of today's Norcom-Cradock game. Norcom (8-1) will face the Bruins if it wins today.
Hampton will play Eastern District champion Granby (5-5) in Norfolk.
''Time didn't run out on us,'' Hampton coach Mike Smith said. ''We had a whole game to get it in and we didn't. They played well and we were unable to move the ball like we thought we would. We played well defensively, but just didn't get it done on offense.''
Linebacker Tim Johnson was the catalyst of Bethel's defensive success. His numerous blitzes helped pressure Brown into a season-high three interceptions, two by Brian Bean.
Johnson's biggest play was tackling Bryan Milo for a 1-yard loss on a third-and-goal situation at the Bethel 1 with just more than two minutes left in the first half. Hampton settled for Pat Welch's tying field goal on fourth down.
''Johnson got great penetration on that play,'' Kozlowski said. ''Defensive guard Rodney Epperly was responsible for stopping Adam Dunbar for no gain on the preceding play.''
Iverson's decisive touchdown pass to Rodgers came on a second-and-10 situation at Hampton's 25.
''It's a play we had success with early in the season where Iverson fakes to the fullback inside and goes to Rodgers down the sideline,'' Kozlowski said.
''Kelly made a great catch on the ball.''
It was Rodgers' eighth touchdown reception in the last five games.
''Walter Ford had good coverage on him on the touchdown,'' Smith said. Rodgers ''just made a good move on the ball.''
The Bruins played without two key players - leading rusher Steve Rimpsey, who was out with an injury, and guard-linebacker Kareem Woods, who was serving a one-game suspension due to his ejection from last week's Lafayette game.
Shelly Ellison, Hampton's season-leading rusher, returned to the starting lineup after a one-game absence with a dislocated shoulder.
He edged Iverson for game rushing honors with 64 yards on 21 attempts. Iverson totaled 60 yards on nine carries.
Bethel scored the game's first points, on the first field goal of senior Darryl Coffie's career from 28 yards with 9:02 left in the second quarter.
Iverson's fourth-down completion for 9 yards to Marlon Anderson for a first down at the Hampton 19 was the key play of drive.
Hampton's field goal was set up when Bean fumbled at Bethel's 15 after intercepting a Brown pass at the 11.
''There were some miscues, but it was an excellent football game,'' Kozlowski said.

Allen Iverson scored 47
points, but David Wesley stole the show with his second straight
game-winning 3-pointer.
Wesley's 25-footer from the left side with 5.9 seconds left
lifted the Charlotte Hornets to an 86-85 victory over the
Philadelphia 76ers.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Sixers, who
squandered a five-point lead in the final minute.
Jamal Mashburn's 3-pointer from the left side pulled the Hornets
within 85-83 with 43 seconds remaining. After Iverson missed a
jumper from the top of the key, the Hornets called a timeout
with 19 seconds left.
Baron Davis took the inbounds pass at midcourt and dribbled to
the top of the key as Wesley ran across the baseline to the left
side, where Elden Campbell screened off defender Aaron McKie.
With a wide-open look at the basket, Wesley drilled the jumper.
"We were running a triple for David. Mashburn was the second
option coming off the screen," Hornets coach Paul Silas said.
"There was a mix-up and David came out wide open. He made a
great shot."
"There's no way we're supposed to give up a 3 in that
situation," Iverson said. "You have to do what you have to do
to guard the perimeter."
Wesley also hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in
Charlotte's 93-91 victory over Golden State on Thursday.
"I always want it (with the game on the line)," Wesley said.
"It's just a question of will the coach call it for you. One
thing about a big shot is you have less time to think about it."
On the ensuing inbounds play, Iverson attempted to drive to the
basket, but Davis stepped in front of him and stole the ball to
seal the win.
"On that last play, Baron just ran through and got the ball,"
Iverson said. "It's a tough call to make either way."
"He (Iverson) got a good run at the basket, but Baron is so
quick we were able to hold him off," Wesley said.
Iverson hit 17-of-33 shots and all 10 of his free throws and
reached the 40-point mark for the second straight night, 14th
time this season and 30th time in his career. He had 43 points
in Friday's win at Detroit.
His 47 points were the most scored against Charlotte this
season, eclipsing a 44-point effort by Kobe Bryant of the Los
Angeles Lakers on February 2.
"Nobody besides Iverson scored in double figures for Philly,"
Silas said. "You've got to believe that one man can't beat you.
But I'll give him credit, he keeps coming at you. I can't say
enough about him. He's a great player."
Eddie Robinson led the Hornets with 15 points off the bench.
Davis had 14 and 10 assists and Wesley finished with 13 points.
In his second game as a Sixer, Dikembe Mutombo had nine points,
nine rebounds and two blocked shots. He had 17 points, 13
rebounds and five blocks in Friday's win at Detroit.
Afterwards, Sixers coach Larry Brown bemoaned his team's defense
down the stretch.
"We gave up two 3's the last two plays," Brown said. "But we
have to give them a lot of credit. They knocked down two big
shots."
Wesley and Robinson attempted to guard Iverson, who had 24 of
his team's 42 points at the half. He was held to six points in
the third quarter before erupting for 17 in the final period.
"He's so quick," Robinson said of Iverson. "I tried to keep him
in front of me. He's so tricky with the ball."
Iverson's third 3-pointer of the game gave Philadelphia a 77-76
lead with 5:19 left. A hook shot by Tyrone Hill increased the
advantage to 79-76 with 4:28 remaining.
After a 20-foot jumper by Mashburn, who finished with 12, pulled
the Hornets within 81-80, Mutombo converted a pair of free
throws with 2:55 left. A jumper by Iverson increased the lead
to 85-80 with 2:03 remaining, but the Sixers failed to score the
rest of the way.
"They made the key plays down the stretch and we didn't," Sixers
forward George Lynch said. "Charlotte gets up for us every time
and even more so because we're favorites in the East. Tonight's
a good measuring stick for them."
The Sixers eliminated the Hornets in the first round of the
playoffs last year and the teams split four meetings this
season.
Iverson scored eight points as the Sixers raced to a 17-6 lead
in the first 6:11. But the Hornets closed the quarter with a
13-4 run as Davis and Robinson combined for nine points.
Charlotte scored six of the first seven points of the second
quarter and took a 25-22 lead on a 10-foot jumper by Campbell.
A 14-foot jumper by Iverson with 33 seconds left in the quarter
gave Philadelphia a 42-41 halftime advantage.
The Sixers increased the lead to 48-43 lead early in the third,
but a 19-4 run opened a 62-52 lead for the Hornets. While
Philadelphia had just two field goals in seven minutes, Davis
and Mashburn combined for 12 points and rookie Jamaal Magloire
scored two baskets.
Philadelphia pulled within 64-58 at the end of the quarter after
a pair of baskets by McKie and a layup by Iverson.
A 3-pointer by Lynch tied the game at 68-68 with 8:25 left in
the fourth quarter.

Allen Iverson earned a bit of immortality last night in the Gund Arena. Playing against the Cleveland Cavaliers and starting poorly before finishing gloriously, Iverson scored a career-high 50 points to become the only rookie ever to score 40 or more points in four consecutive NBA games.
Iverson broke the mark previously held by another Philadelphia rookie named Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 40 or more in three straight games on three different occasions in 1959-60.
The shot that broke the record came with 3 minutes, 37 seconds to play in the 125-118 loss, with the Sixers down by 10 points. It capped a stunning second-half performance by Iverson, whose record-breaking shot was his 11th bucket of the half. Iverson finished 13 of 17 from the field in the second half while scoring 39 points.
``He put on a magnificent display,'' said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello.
When Sixers center Michael Cage was told of the overwhelming accumulation of numbers Iverson put up in the second half, he simply said, ``Wow.''
As the game, another Sixers loss, ended, the 20,009 in the Gund Arena rose from their seats to give Iverson a cheering ovation and Fratello pulled the rookie to the sidelines and whispered in his ear.
``Those things are personal,'' Iverson said when asked what he was told. ``But he told me to keep my head up, to not pay attention to what you guys write about me, to keep playing basketball, doing what I love.''
In the last five games, Iverson has scored 210 points. The Sixers have lost their last seven.
Despite all Iverson could do, in a strange, physical, poorly officiated game, the Sixers lost again. Despite shaving the Cavs' lead to seven three times in the fourth quarter, Philadelphia dropped its 57th decision of the season.
As it was in Friday's loss to Milwaukee - and as it probably will be in the season's five remaining games - the Sixers' defense was the definition of porous. The most points the deliberate, low-scoring Cavs had previously scored in a game this season was 108.
But in this sad-sack season, which winds to a close Saturday in Atlanta, there have been few reasons for the Sixers to celebrate. Last night, as Iverson played his fifth consecutive game of more than 40 minutes and performed as if he were only growing stronger with each passing moment, there was one moment well worth celebrating. And those who played with him will remember.
``Other than Michael Jordan, no,'' said Sixer Frankie King when asked if he had ever witnessed a performance like Iverson's. ``You see why that man was drafted No. 1. He caught fire.
``That was the first of something great for the future, whether Allen Iverson plays in Philadelphia or somewhere else. Allen Iverson is a ballplayer. I'm on this team and I enjoy watching him pay. I would actually pay to see him play.''
It looked early in the game as if Iverson, who had only 11 in the first half while hitting four of 14 shots, might have run out his string. But as the game heated up, so did he. And by the time he finished his scoring with a rash of fantastic plays, seemingly held back in the late going only by several inexplicable calls from the officials, the crowd was cheering him on.
Iverson's 50 points were a Gund record. His 39 second-half points were also a record for the arena.
``I knew I had a chance to break the record, but I didn't want to come into the game thinking totally about breaking that record,'' Iverson said. ``If I got that record, I wanted to get it within what we were trying to do and not try to do too much.
``What shocked me was my teammates' whole response to it; they felt good for me doing that and they felt good for being a part of it. I think, with all that, that was the most special thing to me.''
The cheers of the Cleveland fans, as much as anything, seemed to stun Iverson, who was booed in this very arena in February when he played in the NBA rookie all-star game.
``I didn't ever expect for somebody to be cheering me in Cleveland,'' he said. ``Especially after what they did to me in the rookie all-star game.''
