MY FIRST MONEY WOUND 💸
I made real money for the first time in 8th grade. I was mad for manga and so were half of my classmates.
In front of our school gate, there was a shop selling manga merchandise. Everyday kids like me drooled over those keychains, badges, and pins.
One day, I had a brilliant idea: why not try to make those keychains myself?
I went to an internet shop, browsed Yahoo images (yes, Yahoo) for artworks of the hottest manga characters, and saved them in my dad’s floppy-disk (yes, floppy-disk).
I had them colored-printed, and then ran to the old uncle who had a “laminating shop” - one rusty machine on the back of his 200-year-old bicycle - to laminate those pictures for cheap.
With my dad’s 2-hole mini puncher, I punched holes to attach keychains on them.
Tada! My products were complete.
The next day, I showed up in class with a dozen of those keychains. I sold everything in one morning.
The following days, my keychains were sold out again. Soon enough, kids from other classes started to hand me their pocket money. Lo and behold, my business had expanded!
One afternoon, I sat in the back of the class with my red kitten wallet, counting money. I had a “boyfriend” at the time and he was sitting next to me. I turned to him beaming:
“Look, how much money I made!”
He did not smile.
Instead, he gave me, my money, and my red kitten wallet a cold look. He grunted:
“Money, money! Now you always think about money! What a girl you are!”
I went silent. I was shocked and then I was ashamed. What he said confused me.
“Maybe I’m really becoming bad…” I wondered.
I stopped making keychains after that.
Now, looking back I think:
“Dude, what a dumb thing to say. You could’ve had chè with me for free, every day after school!”
At the same time, I wonder:
“He was a young boy! What must have he heard from other people to have such a negative view about women making money?!”
Until now, this story and its cultural implications still surprise me.
This is one of the stories that later shaped the way I felt towards money.

People always ask me “how do you handle 2 kids, work, maintain a good rs with your husband, have a social life and take care of your own well being at the same time?” My answer is... I DON’T 😂 I don’t always have it all together, even if it seems like I do.
Becoming a mom at 21 was never part of my plan, and the younger Naomi would’ve never imagined herself becoming a mom of two by 25.
There were definitely days when I miss my life before the kids (i think it’s completely normal & okay to feel this way) and days I just wanna stay in the shower a little longer so I can avoid playing fight with my 3 year old toddler lol
I miss hanging out late without having to go on the baby monitor every 5 mins to check on the kids/frantically looking at the time on my phone’s screen and calculating how many hours of sleep I’d be left with if I stayed out for a little longer, I miss going wherever I want and doing whatever I like without worrying about pumping/sleep/school/feeding schedules, I miss not worrying.
But are u f kidding me? Did I go through 2 x 10 months of pregnancy just to tell you I wanna be alone and go back to my old life? Shut up. 😂
I do miss my life before the kids, but you know what I’ll miss more? I’ll miss feeling this way one day when my kids are no longer kids anymore. Just like they always say, “the days are long but the years are short.” So I’ll hug them a little tighter and carry them a little longer while I can, because these will be moments I’ll miss the most.
Motherhood has given me a combination of my worst days and my best days - it has taught me about unconditional love, selflessness, patience, compassion, resilience, failure, pain, happiness and more things about myself I never knew before.
I’m who I am today because of them and I’ll never trade my beautiful children for anything else in the world.
Being a mom isn’t an easy job, so thank you every mama out there for your love, support and guidance! Today, we celebrate US. Happy Mother’s Day ❤️

Tomorrow I will have fruit, granola, bread, Mexican beans and tortilla!
Q2. After losing a tough match, how long does it take for u to get over it ? And how do u motivate yourself again ?
Some losses have taken me weeks to get over and some just one day. I don’t always get it right, but I remind myself of my goals and where I want to get to. That usually motivates me again. I’ve had a good support team as well, my coach, friends and family have gotten me through some tough moments.
I think depends on the player. But it’s also difficult to eat the same foods when you travel to a different city every week. You need to adapt to the foods of that country. Most of the tennis players will eat rice, pasta, some vegetables, and a protein. And the tournaments usually provides those meals.
Q4. Who teach you Taiwanese in the US?
My parents taught me how to speak Taiwanese!
Q5. When you were a middle/high school kids, what was your motivation to keep playing tennis, when you lost a match (this question is for my daughter)? Do you have a favorite song(s) that you listen before your matches?
My motivation to keep playing tennis was that I had fun playing. I grew up playing with many different people and all age groups. It was fun for me to play with different game styles b/c it gave me a chance to problem solve. Losing was always tough, but when I was in middle/high school I didn’t think about losing too much, there was a tournament almost every week so I would just keep going.
I don’t have a favorite song before matches. I like to listen to US hip hop!
I’d really like to play against Roger Federer. I’ve seen him at tournaments, but would be an honor to play against him.
I started playing tennis at four years old. But I wasn’t serious about tennis until eight years old. At a young age I think it’s best to give kids more opportunities to play tennis. It can be with parents, with a tennis coach, or even at the park where there are many other people playing tennis. Also, it’s nice to go watch tennis tournaments.
It hasn’t been easy training and traveling this past year during COVID 19. Last year when all the tournaments were canceled for 5 months , some days were tough to find the motivation. As tennis players we didn’t have tournaments to measure our training and we didn’t have the competition to push us to be better. I think traveling has been the most difficult. Every country has different protocols and it’s tough to know that some countries may not let you in if you don’t have the correct documents. Some players have gone through that. But even through these tough times, overall as tennis players we have done a good job to come back and continue to compete.
Q9. What do you like to do in your free time?
During a training week or at a tournament we are always physically exerting energy so during my free time I like to just relax and do nothing haha. Watch TV shows and movies on Netflix. Any recommendations for good shows?
University games 2017 in Taipei. I have never played in an atmosphere like that before. The energy was really amazing. There were times during the match where i would feel tired but the fans kept me going and pushed me. I will remember that week forever.

Back in the days, around the time when YouTube was founded, before most of you were born, I used to Vlog a lot. I was a little ahead of my time because video sharing platforms were premature back then. I Vlogged so that I can remember my experiences back then. You'll get to know me better if you actually spend the time to watch this. If you do have the patience.
Episode 14 - Christmas 2005, Springfield, Massachusetts
I celebrated Christmas in 2005 with the families of my close friends Will and Henry. This is how Chinese in America celebrate Christmas. It's very much like Chinese New Year here in Asia. We get together, we cook, we eat, we play games, and we have fun.
Children's education are extremely important part of Asian families. Most of us would learn multiple languages, musical instruments, swimming, martial arts etc. In this video, you'll see their talents at an early age.

Learn how to recognise symptoms of mild altitude sickness, as well as the potentially deadly HAPE and HACE (fluid in the lungs/brain). Plenty of advice on how to prepare for the trek, plan a safe itinerary, and what to pack.
Follow our family, including our 11-year old son Lionel, on the Annapurna Circuit in winter. See how the altitude affected us as we climbed Thorong La (5,416 meters/ 17769 feet) – Kirk struggled with his breathing, Lionel felt nauseous, and I had mild hypothermia But we all made it safely in the end.
SUMMARY
*Watch out: some people may feel unwell as low as 2,000 meter (6,500 feet).
*Plan a slower ascent above 3,000 meters (10,000 feet)
*Climb high, sleep low. To be safe, only gain 300 meters (1,000 feet) in sleeping elevation at high altitude.
*If you climb faster than the recommended rate, you can build a rest days every three or four days to acclimatise.
*If you suffer from mild altitude sickness, drink a lot, and rest
*Avoid alcohol, which slows down breathing and makes you dehydrated. Avoid sleeping pills. And smoking will certainly not help!
*If you see no improvement, spend an extra night at the same altitude
*If you feel worse, descend to the last place where you felt well
*If you develop HAPE or HACE, this is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate descent of and specialist medical care. You may have to descend in the middle of the night, don't wait till morning. Once fluid builds up in the brain or lungs, you can die in a matter of hours.
DISCLAIMER
This video is based on first-hand experience of struggling with the altitude on the Annapurna Circuit. We also spent decades of travelling in the Himalayas and Alps. With three decades in TV journalism, I've also done extensive research on the impact of high altitude.
I am NOT a doctor, and I do not have direct experience of taking drugs for altitude sickness like Diamox / Acetazolamide or Nifedipine for HAPE or the use of Gamow bags for hyperbaric treatment. So I have not included any information on this topic. Only sticking to what I have first-hand experience of.
I hope this video helps you plan a safe and enjoyable trek.
