China’s “New Squabbling Situation” (Lee Yee)

Yesterday, I mentioned that the US deterred the Soviet Union’s intention to employ nuclear weapons to attack China’s military base in 1969, and since then implemented a half-century policy of interactions with China. Although the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has always said that “the US will never give up their ambition to destroy our nation,” looking back at history, even when the Eight-Nation Alliance invaded China in the nineteenth century, the US did not make territorial claims from the Qing empire. Instead, it advocated “open doors to share the benefits equally” to avoid China being carved up. The US’ share of the Boxer’s indemnity has been gradually paid back through the training of Chinese talents and the studying of Chinese students in the US. The Rockefeller Foundation founded the Peking Union Medical College (PUMCH) in 1917, the predecessor of Tsinghua University, bringing modern western medicine into China. When the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out, a veteran American military aviator Claire Lee Chennault was hired as an aviation adviser and trainer in China. He organized the First American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Republic of China Air Force, nicknamed the Flying Tigers, and assisted China in fighting against the Japanese in World War II.

In response to the anti-China speech given by the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a mainland Chinese netizen commented, “you needed education, they gave you Tsinghua University; you needed medical care, they gave you PUMCH; you needed to fight against Japan, they gave you the Flying Tigers; you needed to oppose the Soviet Union, they gave you a platform; you needed to open up, they gave you foreign funding; you needed trade, they gave you a trade surplus...You say that they have an endless ambition to destroy your nation, they will give it a try!” This is a very vivid description of how Sino-US relations have evolved so far.

Just a few days before Pompeo delivered his “Communist China and the Free World’s Future” speech, Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi also gave a long speech at the inaugural ceremony of the Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy Studies Centre on July 20. The speech was titled, “Study and Implement Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy Conscientiously and Break New Ground in Major-Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics." I share the URL here ( https://www.sohu.com/a/408705618_99900926 ) and strongly recommend readers to browse this masterpiece. Let’s see if anyone can tell me after reading it, what is the content of Wang’s three to four thousand words on “Xi’s Thought on Diplomacy,” and what specific facts were there about “breaking new ground in major-country diplomacy.” Nowadays, the daily news is about Western countries’ policies, acts, and speeches directed at China and Hong Kong. Mainland netizens have recently lined up the front-page headlines of the Chinese internal newspaper “Reference News,” and they were all, “China condemns…, China warns the UK…, China is resolute to fight back…” This is not at all a new diplomatic situation but a new squabbling situation.”

After reading Wang’s speech, why not make a comparison to see if this Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, who has the same ranking as the US Secretary of State, is of the same caliber and merit as Pompeo? Then you will understand why the US now refuses to restart dialogue with China and only looks at China’s actions.

Looking at the successive Chinese foreign ministers after the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, with the exception of the time during the Cultural Revolution, Zhou Enlai, Chen Yi to Qian Qichen were all decent. I still remember that after the breakthrough in Sino-US relations in 1971, the New York Times columnist James Reston visited Zhou Enlai in China and their battle of words was brilliant. Why does the current foreign minister only speak empty words but know not what they are?

Of course, this is related to the current situation in China for the apotheosis of the core leader. In addition to the unknown “Xi Jinping’s Thought on Diplomacy,” there will be “Xi Jinping’s Thought on Economics, Education, Military…” one after another.

A netizen quoted Wang’s speech and left a comment, “Brown-nosing is linguistic corruption and spiritual bribery...The giver only has to expend dignity and cunning with words, and the recipient is rewarded with personality and public interests. It is consensual for both giver and taker, and they usually have a tacit understanding where they jointly commit an ugly conspiracy...In a totalitarian society, brown-nosing is a multiple outbreak and refractory Covid-19. After an organized and large-scale epidemic, it will eventually become an incurable disease of personality cult detrimental to the entire nation and society.”

German Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer said that “the nature of folly is a moral rather than an intellectual defect.” I believe this moral defect stems from a totalitarian system. When power becomes absolute, all those in power at various levels will, as Lu Xun said, “fawn upon their superiors and be overbearing upon those below.” The regime causes those with authority to never hear the true voice, how is this not stupid?

This is an open letter to Liui / Liui Aquino.

I write to you as a fellow member of our international community, with the hope of sharing with you some wisdom regarding dispute handling, professionalism and how to properly raise awareness.
You recently started a series of ongoing posts to condemn and expose the negative conduct, character and moral compass of a cosplayer you insist to keep anonymous.
Since you’re not willing to say the name, I will. You are talking about Japanese cosplayer Reika.

When I saw your posts on my feed, I was disappointed, heartbroken and embarrassed. I was disappointed not by you speaking out against someone or the fact that that someone is my friend, but the way you have chosen to do so in such a wildly unprofessional manner. I was heartbroken to see the reveal of your vindictive character under the happy-go-lucky symbol of positivity that your fans know and love you for being, and by how you have used it to manipulate your most loyal fans. I was embarrassed that our cosplay community, which is already commonly known enough for being dramatic, now has another smear on its reputation.

I've known Reika since 2011. Since then we’ve attended events as fellow casual attendees, featured guests, competition judges, etc.
While all of my experiences with her have been great, she is, like you and me, human – flawed and emotional, susceptible to becoming tired, busy or annoyed, and inevitably going to have likes and dislikes for things and for people. So I can only speak for myself and I won’t even pretend to doubt that she’s capable of making someone feel awful. I’m not here to defend her character or deny your anguish. After all, you are human too and it’s completely acceptable for you to have feelings.

What is not acceptable is the manipulative hate mongering aggression with which you’ve addressed your issues with. Your posts opened by promoting 1.“awareness”, 2. “facts”, 3. “positivity” and being "healthy", and 4. “stay(ing) away from drama”. Yet, your post does exactly zero of those things. You stated that you’re “willing to put (your) reputation on the line and “expose” her, while doing neither.

1. AWARENESS: To raise awareness, you must be specific and purposeful.
I'm aware that you’ve made your issue public because you have no options of resolving this matter privately or through event staff. But by going public, you inevitably reach people who have no knowledge of what’s going on. So it was important for your post to be specific, clean and free of insults and rhetoric.

In your post, comments and follow up posts, you’re so adamant about not naming Reika that you’re “BEGGING (EVERYONE) NOT TO DROP ANY NAMES IN THE COMMENTS IF YOU WANT TO GUESS THE NAME”. You didn’t expose anyone; you made people guess. You purposely made your information open to assumption. While your “clues” might be obvious enough, your ambiguity has consequences. People will guess wrong, leading to misdirected hate and worry.

You raised confusion, not awareness.

Despite your declaration, you're in fact not “willing to gamble (your) reputation and expose (her) by all means”. You’re not interested in being “respectful to (Reika’s) career” by not saying her name - it was an easy enough guess. You’re interested in firing the first shot as the victim and instigating a witch hunt built on assumption without having to be accountable. It’s a very underhanded and cowardly look from someone of your position.

2. Presenting FACTS when raising awareness: WHAT? WHO? WHY? WHEN? WHERE? HOW?

- WHAT is the problem? – Eg. Talents with bad attitude
- WHO do people need to be wary of? – Eg. Reika
- WHY do you think this? – Eg. She said or did or represented something that was offensive. [INSERT ACTION, QUOTE and CONTEXT that justifies this.]
- WHEN and WHERE did this happen? – Eg. [INSERT TIME] we worked together at [INSERT EVENT].
- HOW does this affect you and people similar to you, and HOW can things be made right? – Eg. It makes you feel [INSERT FEELING]. I would feel better if [INSERT WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO].

You can’t claim to be factual when your post written in the form of an episodic internet series with names like “CHAPTER 1: Juicy Blind Item”. You can’t claim to be “not just personal opinions” when your post are riddled with mockery like “SHE HAS NO SOUL”, taunting like “you picked the wrong fight ma’am” and general hearsay accusations that give no detail like “how do I know? Because I heard...”
You definitely shouldn’t be offering to give “proper advice how to handle this kind of situation” like an “elder brother” if reacting like an undisciplined child is your answer.

3. POSITIVITY and HEALTH: Promoting positivity in a healthy community means bringing people up to your level – not to knocking someone down.

It’s embarrassing to see you trying to be an ambassador for positivity and “praying to God for peace” while slinging threats like “I WILL BURN YOU TO ASHES, BITCH” throughout your posts, and even saying “YOU WILL HATE HER MORE when you see the next story!!! Grrrrrr hahahahaha” when replying to comments.
It’s hypocritical of you to claim to be acting on behalf of the community when you mock Reika fans within your community by calling them “elitist” while flaunting your fans as the “cool, funny, SMART” people.
You must realise that, with the size of your following, you have loyal fans who stick by you, trust and support you no matter what. It’s your duty to them to be transparent and professional and not manipulate their trust. Many of your supporters expressed unconditional support for you. Some have even accepted your words as the absolute truth and expressed hate for Reika from reading your posts. Why? They have faith in you. You've shamelessly abused their trust.

Your post and comments are telling of your intentions. You don’t want peace. You want more hate.
That’s not healthy or positive... for you, your fans or the community.

4. STAYING OUT OF DRAMA: saying it doesn’t mean you’re doing it.
How can you claim not to want drama when your posts are written in the form of an episodic web series, with sensational titles like “CHAPTER 1: Juicy Blind Item”, and attention grabbing introductions like “you want REAL cosplay drama?” and sign outs like “Chapter 2, 3, 4 are coming soon”?
You are, by definition, creating drama.

In life there are many things we can’t control and just as many things we can control. We can’t control how people treat us, what they think of us, or how that makes us feel. But we can can control how we treat others, how we look at ourselves and what we do with our feelings.

You can’t make Reika like you or treat you in the way that you feel good. But you are in control of how you act upon it.
There are two ways you can combat bad attitude:
1. Fight back with equally bad attitude
2. Snuff it out by encouraging good attitude
I can’t help but think that you acted in pure frustrated retaliation.
It’s been hard to see you reveal yourself in this way. The global cosplay community is in continuous struggle to maintain a positive, fun and (for some people) professional environment. With your post, it feels like we’ve lost a star.

I won’t tell you to control or suppress your emotions; you are human after all, like said before.
But please. Reflect before you react. Be kind to others. Your actions speak louder than your words. The people are not stupid or blind. They will notice.

I hope you can find the peace and resolution you are looking for.

《和屍體說話的人》

Do you believe in past life, and its strong invisible influence over your present life?

He was the Sherlocks Holmes of Taiwan.

The modern day Justice Pao (現代包青天), known to bring justice to murdered victims.

楊青天大人, he was nicknamed by his countrymen.

I had never heard of 楊日松博士, Dr Yang Jih-sung.

Till I read the story written by my Grandmaster, Living Buddha Lian-Sheng, which I posted two days ago.

That was donkey years back.

In my decade long of mastering Chinese Metaphysics, I have amassed hundreds, if not thousands, of Bazi in my crumpled dog-eared notebooks.

One continuous homework that I have been doing since 2006, is to study the Bazi, faces, bodies and lives of not just famous people, people featured in the newspapers (hit-and-run victims, suicide victims, criminals, scholars, helpful people etc.) but as well as people around me.

Shifu said, the more we study, the better and faster we get at dissecting a person's Bazi and people reading.

The goal is to train our eyes and brain so well that we can see a person naked (figuratively, of course) within one split second.

And when a person walks past, without turning our heads to look, we must be able to tell Shifu the current financial state and luck of the person. #aurareading

Such training was very strenuous in the beginning. When I didn't pass the impromptu tests given by Shifu, I was meted harsh punishment and disallowed further learning, till I passed with flying colours.

I got curious about Dr Yang about a month ago. He had a very fascinating career history.

What does he have in his Bazi, that determines him to be a righteous and dedicated forensic expert with such top-notch crime-solving skills?

What had he done to be bestowed the divine title of 城隍爺 (City God), after his death?

I read that he allegedly handled more than 30,000 bodies over the course of his 62-year career. I took out my calculator. That worked out to 484 bodies every year. 40.3 bodies every month, which is about 1.34 bodies every day.

While all his classmates went off to become doctors, Dr Yang was the only one from his class to take up forensics. It was a decision he made after his brother was forcefully coerced into a confession by the Japanese that he was a spy and wrongfully jailed, and another friend was unfairly charged of being a thief.

Dr Yang learnt early in his life, that eye witnesses were insufficient to solve a case. There was a pressing need for strong scientific evidence.

What caught my eye about Dr Yang was his utmost respect to the dead bodies.

He would always take a bow to the victim before starting work on the dead body.

Through the decades, he had never wore any protective gear like masks and gloves during autopsies.

In his biography:

"A forensic expert’s job is more than just studying and dissecting the bodies. If necessary, we need to taste the contents of their stomachs and determine the time of death from the acidity. We can also tell from the bitterness whether there was poisoning involved.”
He cites a case where three charred bodies were brought in from the same incident.
“They smelled the same, so I could tell that they were burned at the same time. If I wore a mask, I would not be able to observe this subtle detail,” he says. “And, I believe that wearing a mask is disrespectful toward the deceased.”
Finally, he explains that he “cannot feel the elasticity of the skin” if he has gloves on.

I don't know if you have ever smelt a corpse. But it is known to be extremely foul.

Especially when the bodies have been thrown into the sea, or buried deep in the soil, before digging out much later.

Dr Yang never feared infection by the bacteria in the corpses.

Those were the days when CSI kind of science did not exist.

楊日松法醫：「你沒有良心，做不了。」

Dr Yang solved his first case when he was just an intern and still a student at Taipei Medical University in 1949. A pair of university lovers supposedly hung themselves by the Tamsui River, but the man survived. Later on, Dr Yang quickly proved that the noose was too small for two persons to be hung together. The man had murdered his girlfriend and staged a suicide attempt, complete with a forged suicide note, to cover up.

Dr Yang was only 21 years old then. (Jeez...what was I doing at 21?)

He went on to solve many difficult cases, which shocked Taiwan's society. Here are just 3 of them:

1. September 1977. It was Taiwan's 1st dismemberment murder case.

Two plastic bags containing about 6 pieces of body parts were found along the Dahan River.

DNA tests were non-existent then.

Dr Yang was called in, and his examination showed that the body parts belonged to the same person. He also provided the victim's age and possible identity at a reporters' conference, where he displayed the body parts on a table, and listed 10 areas of identification.

Including, the mammary glands were not enlarged, proof that the woman had never been pregnant.

And how the woman was possibly murdered and mutilated.

The police soon tracked the murderer to a ex-convict, who put up a false hiring notice, to trick young ladies.

2. 1990. The murder of a young Japanese undergraduate.

The body could not be found till a year later.

The young lady came to Taiwan for solo free and easy travel. She got onto a taxi, with a friendly driver who showed her around Taiwan. Iguchi Mariko agreed to staying at the driver's home for the night, when she could not find accommodation.

Her body was mutilated into 100+ parts and buried under a big tree. Her head was thrown into a rubbish bin.

When the police caught the taxi driver, Dr Yang provided scientific evidence that the taxi driver washed his home walls with strong chemicals and the water usage during the month of murder was 5 times the usual amount.

While the bones were too damaged to be tested for DNA, Dr Yang could piece them together that they belonged to the same person.

This case shocked both Taiwan and Japan.

3. 1993. The dead Marine Captain Yin Ching-feng (尹清楓)
The Captain was discovered dead along the coast of Yilan. The military claimed it was suicide by drowning. Dr Yang examined the corpse and discovered many wounds. There was no ocean debris in the lungs or other drowning symptoms.
Dr Yang announced that the Captain was murdered before being disposed into the ocean.
His honest words unscrambled a huge military scandal in Taiwan and caused many high-ranking officials to lose their jobs.

Dr Yang was also involved in the examination of 17-year-old Bai Hsiao Yen's mauled body. During the examination, Bai Bing Bing, the famous Taiwanese actress, mother of the victim, requested to be present.
Calling Dr Yang a Bodhisattva to the family of the victims, Bai Bing Bing was deeply moved by Dr Yang's comforting words to her:
我只能幫你瞭解真相。我沒有辦法再騰出我的手，再來救一個萬一昏倒的人。妳放心，妳信任我，我等一下一定會給妳最清楚的答案。
(I can only help you find out the truth. I am unable to lend another hand, to save a person who might faint. Don't worry. Trust me. Later I will definitely give you the clearest answer.)

Due to the nature of his work, Dr Yang contracted a skin disease, which caused great itchiness. Two months of seeing the doctor and injections did not help. Eventually, Dr Yang learnt of using rice water to wash his skin. Neighbours and Taiwanese who knew of Dr Yang's condition would bring rice water all the way to his home. It took 6 months before Dr Yang's skin ailment was under control.

There were many cases that Dr Yang solved, with supernatural help.

Once, when he was on a car together with his friends, he spotted a lady sitting beside him. He kept quiet as he assumed she was the friend of one friend. Later on, the car was stopped at a roadblock, where the officer told Dr Yang that he was needed at a crime scene. By then, the lady had mysteriously disappeared.

When Dr Yang reached the scene, he saw that the corpse looked exactly like the lady in the car. He knew immediately it wasn't a suicide case, as seen from the surface.

Another time, Dr Yang was at home when there was a knock on his door. He opened the door and saw a lady in a tracksuit with her head down. The lady sought Dr Yang's help to examine her injury. Dr Yang replied that he didn't have his equipment right now and asked the lady to go to the police station tomorrow. The next morning, during an autopsy, Dr Yang saw a body which didn't have clear facial features, as the body was rescued from the river.

He asked for the police to show him the clothes the body was found in. It was the EXACT same tracksuit as the lady who knocked on his door last night.

One day after work, Dr Yang's car was flagged down by a lady standing by the road. It was pouring heavily. Dr Yang got the chauffeur to stop his car and the lady asked to hitch a ride. Dr Yang agreed. The lady remained silent and kept her head down throughout. Dr Yang found her vaguely familiar.

After she disembarked, for some reason, Dr Yang's chauffeur got lost and could not find his way home. For over an hour, his car kept turning around the same spot.

Feeling something was amiss, Dr Yang headed back to Yilan, and re-examined the corpse. He had initially deduced that the corpse had committed suicide by drinking pesticide. On his 2nd examination, he discovered that the pesticide was found in the lungs. Usually for such suicide case, pesticide would be present in the esophagus. But if one was forced to drink it, the pesticide would leak into the lungs. Dr Yang amended his autopsy conclusion of suicide to murder.

Many supernatural incidents like these had alerted Dr Yang to correcting his initial findings, and solving mysterious cases.

Yet, there were times when Dr Yang was unable to reach a conclusive result despite many rounds of autopsy.

Then, Dr Yang would pray to the "Floating Head" in his autopsy laboratory. It belonged to a murdered victim, whose case was also resolved by Dr Yang. For some reason, the family/friend didn't want to claim the head. The head had been preserved in a glass container of formalin for 50 over years and its hair and moustache would grow. It was the Guardian Protector of Dr Yang and his team.

Each time after Dr Yang prayed to it, he would gain new insights into the case on hand.

During the Hungry Ghosts' Festival, Dr Yang would lead his entire team to pray to the "good brothers" and made many offerings. He had never missed a year of prayers.

While most educated people turn their noses up at the talk of ghosts and gods, this is one Doctor who will bow humbly before them and ingrain into his team the importance of respect.

Dr Yang told my Grandmaster that in his past life, he was the confidential secretary to the King of Hades. Hence in this lifetime, he took on the role of a forensic expert, helping murdered victims to redress the injustice they suffered.

Dr Yang's Bazi was an interesting revelation to his life and character, and why his occupation suited his Bazi to a T.

During his time, there were less than 10 forensic experts in the whole of Taiwan.

His integrity, courage, care to minute details, diligence, quest to find the truth and dedication are qualities I deeply admired. The same qualities my Shifu had been drilling into me for the past 11 years to be a very competent practitioner.

In this era where most people worship the famous and the rich, it is very rare to find a noble character like Dr Yang, who also respected the spiritual world.

Before he passed on due to colon caner, Dr Yang had expressed no regret over his career choice. The only thing he felt bad about was not being to provide more for his children, as public servants in Taiwan earned much less than doctors.

But Dr Yang, your heroic legacy is one that your children and descendants can speak proudly of for decades. The merits you left for them can guarantee them a better life than money ever can buy.

Dr Yang was born on 23 November, 1927. He passed away on the same day, in 2011.

I wanted to post this article yesterday, on his birthday and death anniversary. I took too long to write and am a day late. But I still wish to share Dr Yang's great life story with you.

Congratulations on your promotion to be the righteous City God. You totally earned it. 🙏

Hi! My name is Loretta, a girl from the U.S. who moved to Japan to start Graduate School via the MEXT Scholarships.

① Do I Speak Japanese? Yep! I was taught formally in High School and have been speaking now for over 15 years.
② What uni did I attend in Japan: Yokohama National University's "Masters of Business Administration" Program
③ How old are you?: Year of the dragon. :D The math is up to you.
④ What camera equipment do you use?: I film my videos with a Canon 60D using a 30mm Sigma Art Lens and I edit with Sony Vegas Pro (with some help from photoshop). Additional cameras include GoPro Hero 7 Black and DJI Majic Air
