A year ago I went with my family to visit a sick Penan man, Isak, in his village, in the centre of Borneo- near the Malaysia/Indonesia border. We sat in his house - a space made of wooden planks, elevated above the ground, no larger than 300 square feet. In this space, he and his wife keep sacks full of padi, cook, sleep and weave. They also share the space with a white owl, some cats and a baby wildboar.

As they were talking, an object that hung on the ceiling caught my attention. To anyone else it wouldn't have meant much. It was a modest piece of dark brown, old bamboo, just less than two feet long. Through my musician eyes, it made me curious, excited, interested. Isak's wife followed by gaze. Will you play it for me? I gestured. She and her sister Pahin laughed as they took it off the wall.

As they were tuning the four bamboo strings I tried to understand how it worked, but the tuning to me didn't make any sense. The sape' at least has some rules to it. When I asked how the tuning worked, I was told "yang ini balas yang ini, yang ini balas yang itu" (this string echoes that one ). But the pagang in its strangeness (out of tune, inconsistent rhythm) has the most haunting sound, the kind of sound that takes your soul on a journey. To me, that is music.

Pahin's mother had taught her how to play to the pagang. There are no words, there are no specific songs, you play it when you're feeling nostalgic ("untuk mengingat-ingat"). As we left the house last year, Pahin and her sister gave me the old pagang.

Fast forward a year later to 2016, and the pagang stayed untouched in my flat in KL. I eventually brought it back to the village with me. "E'e Pahin, akeu pekelai memagang" (Grandma Pahin, I want to learn the pagang --- I'd learnt some Penan language in hospital). She showed me how to tune, how to hold it and how to move my fingers. She also took out the bamboo Jews harp she had made years ago and began playing it. I sat with her daughters, her son, and her grandchildren who had never heard these instruments before.

Two days after this, I was lying on the floor of our longhouse after spending four hours in the farm, when Pahin and her husband appear at the door. They had walked through the jungle to bring us rattan shoots, and a brand new pagang. She placed the fresh green bamboo instrument in my hands, and told me to learn - "pekelai".

I first met Puni or known as Momo to me back in 2012 - she was the first Moe Moe Kyun Maid from Indonesia. I always remember her cute round face and she feels like a rabbit lol. She is very talented in playing musical instruments although she always say that she makes mistakes but ahhh it's heavenly music to my ears lol.

I met Pinky in AFA ID 2013 after admiring her works for years ~ she is a great costume maker , her skills are so good that she inspires me very much when it comes to costume making . My idol <3

They are both very funny , time passes by so fast when spent with them. !
