“If you don't know the words, that means you don't understand the concept, and therefore, you don't even realize that concept is even a possibility.” —— human rights activist Yeonmi Park。
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I was born in 1993 in the northern part of North Korea, in a town called Hyesan, which is on the border with China. I had loving parents and one older sister. Before I was even 10 years old, my father was sent to a labor camp for engaging in illegal trading. Now, by "illegal trading" -- he was selling clogs, sugar, rice and later copper to feed us. In 2007, my sister and I decided to escape. She was 16 years old, and I was 13 years old.
1. on the border with 鄰近邊界
2. labor camp
3. illegal trading
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I need you to understand what the word "escape" means in the context of North Korea. We were all starving, and hunger means death in North Korea. So it was the only option for us. I didn't even understand the concept of escape, but I could see the lights from China at night, and I wondered if I go where the light is, I might be able to find a bowl of rice. It's not like we had a grand plan or maps. We did not know anything about what was going to happen. Imagine your apartment building caught fire. I mean, what would you do? Would you stay there to be burned, or would you jump off out of the window and see what happens? That's what we did. We jumped out of the house instead of the fire.
4. in the context of 在⋯⋯的情境中
5. concept
6. a grand plan
7. catch fire
★★★★★★★★★★★★
North Korea is unimaginable. It's very hard for me when people ask me what it feels like to live there. To be honest, I tell you: you can't even imagine it. The words in any language can't describe, because it's a totally different planet, as you cannot imagine your life on Mars right now. For example, the word "love" has only one meaning: love for the Dear Leader. There's no concept of romantic love in North Korea. And if you don't know the words, that means you don't understand the concept, and therefore, you don't even realize that concept is even a possibility.
8. unimaginable
9. no concept of...
10. romantic love
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Let me give you another example. Growing up in North Korea, we truly believed that our Dear Leader is an almighty god who can even read my thoughts. I was even afraid to think in North Korea. We are told that he's starving for us, and he's working tirelessly for us, and my heart just broke for him. When I escaped to South Korea, people told me that he was actually a dictator, he had cars, many, many resorts, and he had an ultraluxurious life. And then I remember looking at a picture of him, realizing for the first time that he is the largest guy in the picture. And it hit me. Finally, I realized he wasn't starving. But I was never able to see that before, until someone told me that he was fat.
11. an almighty god
12. tirelessly
13. a dictator
14. it hit me 突然想到、意識到
16. ultraluxurious
17. have a…life 過著⋯⋯的生活
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Really, someone had to teach me that he was fat. If you have never practiced critical thinking, then you simply see what you're told to see. The biggest question also people ask me is: "Why is there no revolution inside North Korea? Are we dumb? Why is there no revolution for 70 years of this oppression?" And I say: If you don't know you're a slave, if you don't know you're isolated or oppressed, how do you fight to be free? I mean, if you know you're isolated, that means you are not isolated. Not knowing is the true definition of isolation, and that's why I never knew I was isolated when I was in North Korea. I literally thought I was in the center of the universe.
18. critical thinking
19. revolution 革命
20. dumb
21. oppression
22. isolated and oppressed

So here is my idea worth spreading: a lot of people think humans inherently know what is right and wrong, the difference between justice and injustice, what we deserve and we don't deserve. I tell them: BS. Everything, everything must be taught, including compassion. If I see someone dying on the street right now, I will do anything to save that person. But when I was in North Korea, I saw people dying and dead on the streets. I felt nothing. Not because I'm a psychopath, but because I never learned the concept of compassion. Only, I felt compassion, empathy and sympathy in my heart after I learned the word "compassion" and the concept, and I feel them now.
23. inherently
24. justice and injustice
25. psychopath
26. compassion, empathy and sympathy
*compassion: a strong feeling of sympathy and sadness for the suffering or bad luck of others and a wish to help them
empathy: the ability to share someone else's feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in that person's situation
sympathy: (an expression of) understanding and care for someone else's suffering
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Now I live in the United States as a free person.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
And recently, the leader of the free country, our President Trump, met with my former god. And he decided human rights is not important enough to include in his agendas, and he did not talk about it. And it scares me. We live in a world right now where a dictator can be praised for executing his uncle, for killing his half brother, killing thousands of North Koreans. And that was worthy of praise. And also it made me think: perhaps we all need to be taught something new about freedom now. Freedom is fragile. I don't want to alarm you, but it is. It only took three generations to make North Korea into George Orwell's "1984." It took only three generations. If we don't fight for human rights for the people who are oppressed right now who don't have a voice, as free people here, who will fight for us when we are not free? Machines? Animals? I don't know.
27. agenda 議程
28. be praised for 因⋯⋯獲得讚揚
29. execute (v.) 處決
30. worthy of sth
31. fragile
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I think it's wonderful that we care about climate change, animal rights, gender equality, all of these things. The fact that we care about animals' rights, that means that's how beautiful our heart is, that we care about someone who cannot speak for themselves. And North Koreans right now cannot speak for themselves. They don't have internet in the 21st century. We don't have electricity, and it is the darkest place on earth right now. Now I want to say something to my fellow North Koreans who are living in that darkness. They might not believe this, but I want to tell them that an alternative life is possible. Be free.
32. speak for oneself
★★★★★★★★★★★★
From my experience, literally anything is possible. I was bought, I was sold as a slave. But now I'm here, and that is why I believe in miracles. The one thing that I learned from history is that nothing is forever in this world. And that is why we have every reason to be hopeful. Thank you.
34. slave
35. miracle

Understanding Mutual Respect (English version below)
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
2 of my female students flouted the Buddhism precept of abstinence from alcohol.
One of them, in her early 30s, told me that it was a company gathering, and her supervisor egged her to drink. She could not refuse. My disciple asked her, isn't it absurd that as a white-collared employee, she has to "part-time" as a drinking hostess?
This student of mine also lied to her husband and parents-in-laws numerous times, that she was working overtime when, in fact, she was out drinking.
Another student of mine is a middle-aged lady, who was requested by her superior to buy duty-free alcohol on her return from travelling. She also told me that she did not know how to say no to her boss.
This lady, like me, took refuge under the same Root Guru, Living Buddha Lian Sheng. However, she blantantly ignored His Teachings and my reminders. She did not diligently read the Dharma books and discourses from our Root Guru Master, yet always sought my help in Feng Shui and Bazi to solve her family woes. This is not solving the root causes at all.
Hence, she missed out on a recent Dharma discourse by our Root Guru: If you give alcohol to others, you are breaking the precept of abstinence from alcohol, and the consequence is 500 rebirths without limbs.
(Eg. like a millipede)
These 2 students did not tell their superiors of their precepts.
If you do not respect your own faith, nobody will give your faith the due respect too.
If you don't break your silence and let others know about the precepts in your religion, how would others know about your precept on abstinence from alcohol?
If you voice it out, naturally your superior will not ask you to buy alcohol nor bring you along for drinking sessions.
You must first have the spirit to uphold the precepts, lacking which you will be easily swayed by situations such as embarrassment or fear of losing your job, and eventually flouting the precepts.
There is more than one job for you in this world.
If you flout the precepts intentionally, and lose your merits, what good future do you think is left for you?
Our merit and virtues are the source of all that we desire.
The Heavens and Earth have virtues , therefore can encompass all. The Sun, moon and the stars have virtues, hence their never ending radiance.
Man must have virtues, in order to enjoy peace, prosperity and bliss.
You cannot give the excuse that you fear the consequence of saying no. There is always another job out there. A person must have higher aspirations, and the willpower to observe the precepts in order to be blessed by the virtuous gods.
If you do not respect your own faith, how would another person respect it? He will not be impressed, and may even secretly despise you for being a hypocrite in taking refuge, as you are not steadfast in upholding your precepts.
Do not ever do this.
As a boss, as a superior, you must command the respect of your subordinates with your merits and virtues. It is natural that your subordinate will not dare to offend you because she needs the job and salary to make a living or feed their families.
Even if she follow your instructions, at the expense of flouting her precepts, deep in her heart, she will think lesser of you. If one day she receives another job offer, she will not hesitate to leave you because she feel that you are lacking in virtues and unworthy of her loyalty.
If she stays on, then it must be for the reason that she too is lacking in virtues. A non-virtuous superior + a non-virtuous employee, what good result can they produce?
A practicing Buddhist must learn to correct oneself, and others. Therefore, you need to explain to you boss, or any other people who do not understand your rationale, why you refuse to help him/her in certain things such as buying alcohol, cigarettes, R-rated publications, etc.
Everyone must understand what exactly precepts are. It is not applicable solely to people with a religious faith. Precepts are the cornerstone of a upright and righteous human being. They are the foundation of spreading goodness and curbing the non-virtuous in us, and applicable to every one of us
As long as you are human, you should observe the precepts. Walking on the right path, and not committing any sin, will ensure that our merits are not taken away.
The boss of my middle-aged student "advised" her not to be too attached to the precepts. Didn't Buddha proclaim non-attachment? So said the boss.
If one has not taken refuge and properly learn the Dharma, please do not behave like a know-it-all and dish out irresponsible "advice" to others. This grave act of recklessness may destroy the life of wisdom in the listener, akin to the act of killing.
When Lord Buddha was about to enter Nirvana, his disciple, Ananda, asked, "When the Buddha is in this world, He is revered as our Teacher. But when the Buddha enters Nirvana, who should we follow as our Teacher?"
Buddha expounded: "I have already given you the precepts. The precepts are your teacher".
Drinking alcohol will create chaos to the human nature, and countless sins arise, such as drunk driving, drunk fighting, loss of etiquette, blabbering of nonsense, sexual indecency, attracting bad company, etc.
An old client of mine, in his 70s, lives frugally. Together with his wife and children, they are Buddhists. However, the elderly man is an alcoholic.
His eldest son is my disciple. Previously, to make his father happy, he would buy him liquor and beer whenever the elderly man asks for it.
Subsequently, his wife (also my disciple) prevented him from buying alcohol, out of consideration for the elderly man's health and their precepts. They also told the mother and younger siblings to refrain from buying.
However, all the eldest son got was a bellow of "Useless son!" from the elderly man.
A few years later, alcoholism took a toil on the old man and he was warded for an operation in the middle of this year.
I pitied him and helped him towards a smoother recovery with my Metaphysics abilities.
Deluded is the man who drinks.
Ignorant is the filial piety of the children who feed his alcoholism.
I have abstained from intoxicants for over a decade, and neither do I consume food with alcohol in it.
What are the merits from such abstinence?
Beside mental clarity and supreme wisdom, one will not be stricken with schizophrenia, mental disarray, mental disturbance and fall prey to temptations.

27th LEARNING SESSION RECAP: PEACH BLOSSOM LUCK IN PERSONAL MAGNETIZATION (English version below)
On 11th April 2017, Master Dai Hu held his 27th session with the theme "Peach Blossoms Dancing In The Wind - Strengthen Your Personal Magnetization", teaching entrepreneurs the ways to more profits, and salaried staff the methods to attracting supportive bosses and colleagues, as well as how to excel in over areas of life.
At the start of the session, Master Dai Hu asked the participants if they know the 3 occupations to avoid.
He then went to talk about the occupations of killing, prostitution and gambling.
Indeed, one lady participant has a side business in the food industry. Master said taking the lives of any living being in the six realms of existence is killing, sowing a seed of heavy negative karma. This sin will implicate your ancestors, bring harm to you and your family, as well as your descendants.
Master explained the karma of killing, and advised the participant to quit the food business, as well as chanting the Mantra for Rebirth to Pureland and dedicate its merits to all animals killed by her. Even if these animals were not killed by her personally, they died for her, so the wrongdoing of killing is still there.
This participant presented a bouquet of flower to Master as a first-time meeting gift. Master made an offering to the Buddha's and Bodhisattvas on the spot, explained to all the merits of flower offerings and how it can positively affect our Peach Blossom luck.
Learning Session Highlights:
1. One participant spoke in a very stiff manner. Master Dai Hu advised her not to speak like a robot, since the theme that day was on Peach Blossom Luck of Personal Magnetization.
2. Protecting our voice has an intricate link to our destiny.
3. It is hard to accomplish anything without Peach Blossom luck.
4. Where is one's Peach Blossom luck?
5. The wrong food consumption based on your Bazi will result in:
Frequent scoldings by your boss
Losses in the stock market
Complaints from customers, etc.
6. We will only suffer if we embark on a career that is against what our Bazi needs.
7. Not all humans are born in the human realm in their past lives. Some were animals in their previous lives.
8. Master Dai Hu, out of compassion, highlighted to a participant how her husband needed to watch out for changes in his health.
9. Master Dai Hu invited all participants to tell him, what did they think Peach Blossom Luck is?
Ms Ho : It is a form of attraction.
Miss Lee: It is the power that elicits support and love from other people.
Ms Liao : It is a power that makes others want to be closer to you.
10. Master Dai Hu explained the true meaning of Peach Blossom Luck, and mentioned that a person will speak in an abrupt manner if there's excessive of THIS element in the Bazi.
11. Which of our body feature plays the most important part in our Peach Blossom luck?
12. How can cosmetics help in your Peach Blossom luck?
13. How does doing kind deeds influence your Peach Blossom luck?
14. Drops of rain, when collected, will form the rivers and the seas. Small stones, when gathered, will form mountains. Therefore, small deeds of kindness can accumulate into a huge meritorious deed.
15. Why do some people become a servant or maid for life?
16. Master Dai Hu reminded the participants to thank the service staff. A word of thank-you is important. It does not cost a thing to you but not saying it shows that you lack manners, culture, etiquette and knowledge.
17. We are humans, not animals. Therefore we must behave with etiquette, that is becoming of a human.
18. We should not lead another person to fall in love with us, if we are not interested in him/her in the first place, as this will bring suffering to the other person. That is definitely not a virtuous act.
19. Master Dai Hu noticed that only one participant took notes, and said that he liked to teach people who were graduates because of their willingness to think and take notes. The only shortcoming, due to their high qualifications, is their tendency to underestimate the power of Metaphysics.
20. Regardless of your academic qualification and wealth status, never fall short on your aspirations.
21. You will enjoy Peach Blossom luck when you are in high spirits. Master Dai Hu recommended 3 types of food to maintain our happy state of mind.
22. Master Dai Hu did a live analysis of the Peach Blossom luck of each participant, according to their Bazi and facial features, and advised them the ways of strengthening it.
23. One lady participant has a stubborn character. Master Dai Hu advised her to quit her obstinate ways and strive towards a better destiny.
24. Jay Chou vs Wang Lee Hom. Why is Jay Chou more popular? How did he accumulate so much Peach Blossom Luck from his previous life?
25. When we are in the wrong career, we will be have unappreciative bosses and our well-being will be affected.
A fiery temper, as the name implies, has a fire element. Thus the common phrase in Buddhism: The fire destroys your forest of merits. It is extremely hard to cultivate merits but effortless to destroy them. We must always reflect on our lack, and do our best to rectify. Do not get angry and emotional if someone criticises you. This is not the way to enjoy great Peach Blossom luck.
To change for the better is to strive for a better tomorrow. Let go of all that is not beneficial for you. Constant grumbling and complaining is like hugging a time bomb. It will destroy your fortunes anytime.
Everyone should smile more, to exude more affability. The aim of our spiritual cultivation is to sever all attachments. If you want people to treat you well, ask yourself if you can do that to others in the first place. If not, you are just going to chase away your benefactors and destroy your own merits unknowingly.
At the end of session, Master Dai Hu fulfilled the wishes of the participants by autographing his book, blessing the chanting beads of a participant, and teaching them the proper usage of the beads. The session ended on an auspicious note.

TWICE 'Alcohol-Free'
(3) Momo & Mina "That's what you do to me"
I'm drunk in you"
(5) Mina
(6) Sana & Momo
Melon 24hits
