在中國生活十年的美國人馬修·泰（Matthew Tye）說，他沒有想到，逃離中國的事情會
發生在自己身上。三年前的那些遭遇，也讓他徹底改變對中國的看法。
馬修在美國紐約州小鎮出生長大。2008年，大學畢業的他不安於一眼望得到頭的工作和生
活，想要出去看一看。一個到中國教英語的機會，讓他到了廣東惠州。他之後在那裡成家
立業，娶妻生子，太太還是中國人。
相比真名，Laowhy86是馬修更為人所知的名字。這是他自2012年起在YouTube上運營的個
人頻道。Laowhy諧音“老外”，也指以他這個外國人的視角看中國，解讀中國。
與現在很多在中國的外籍網紅一樣，馬修早期的視頻大多都是他在中國的生活和游歷經歷
，或是美中兩國文化之間的比較。馬修說，那些視頻和他所經歷的都很正面積極，但是大
約從2016年開始，情況出現了變化。
他對美國之音說：“那時我真正開始注意到，和我不熟的人，或者看很多中國國內新聞的
人，變得越來越民族主義。你遇到越來越多這樣的情況，比如你在外面吃飯，會有人對你
嚷嚷，或因為你娶了中國妻子就對你怒目相視。”
“我覺得這種變化至少可以歸因於習近平的政策走向，那種政策認為是外部世界在妖魔化
中國，而中央政府沒有問題。” 他說。
那一年，習近平收緊媒體控制，要求“黨媒姓黨”，中國國內言論自由的空間也進一步限
縮。
不祥之兆
2017年在內蒙古的經歷，讓馬修切實看到了不好的兆頭。當時，他和好友兼搭檔、另一位
YouTube博主溫斯頓··斯特策爾（Winston Sterzel）正在拍攝第二部旅行紀錄片《摩托
上的中國北方》。他們此前拍攝的展現中國南方鄉村風貌的騎行中國紀錄片，收獲了不錯
的口碑。
馬修說，他們透過朋友聯繫了一位在政府工作的人，他同意帶他們去拍攝內蒙古遊牧部落
的生活，但是這位不太懂英文的政府員工後來因為看到中國網站上對他們一些YouTube視
頻的曲解，認為他們拍攝的目的是要醜化中國，突然變卦。
馬修說：“他之後還打電話給每一個我們要去的地方，和他們說，這些人來這裡是要取笑
你們，是要讓中國難看，這些當然不是事實。”
他們的拍攝團隊最終還是設法拍到了遊牧部落，但是晚上在酒店休息時，一群特警破門而
入。
馬修說：“探員和佩戴著槍和隨身攝像頭的特警人員闖進我們的酒店房間，把我們分開審
訊。他們試圖讓我們承認我們是記者，或者是在拍攝非法視頻。我們反復給他們看我們拍
的，給他們看我們拍的駱駝的視頻，一些吃東西的視頻。都是些旅遊的東西，但他們非常
強硬。我聽到他們在走廊上說，就是這兩個人。”
警察在盤問幾小時後離去，但令馬修不安的是，在距離廣東千裡之遙的內蒙古草原，那些
人竟然對他們的背景一清二楚：“他們知道我們曾在哪裡工作，知道我的上一份工作合同
，知道我在哪裡購物過，知道我妻子的名字，知道我妻子的工作單位。”
馬修說：“這是我們在那一年和之前一年遇到過的許多事情之一。這讓我意識到，不祥之
兆已經來臨，感覺我在中國不再受歡迎。”
逃離中國
馬修真正感到危險來臨，是從內蒙古回到惠州之後。那是2018年初，他的朋友告訴他，當
地公安局的人，正拿著他的照片在外國人比較多的酒吧和場所打聽他的消息。
聯系到內蒙古的事，他預感不妙，決定馬上離開，先去香港，再做進一步打算，以免被禁
止出境。他簡單地收拾了行李，由朋友開車送到深圳的邊境口岸。
他說：“我在邊境口岸非常緊張，在想萬一我被捲入了什麼事怎麼辦。我過海關的時候，
邊檢人員問我有沒有中文名字。我之前從來沒有被問過這個問題，不知道這個人為什麼要
問我這個。我就說我沒有中文名字。過了關，一位女警官拍了拍我的肩膀，我不知道她的
頭銜，但我轉過身去，聽到他們在說一個名字，就是我的中文名字，我的第一個中文名字
。這位女警問我會不會回中國大陸。我說，會的，我想最好是這樣回答吧。她說，好的。
然後讓我離開了。”
2020年7月馬修將他逃離中國的經歷發布到YouTube後，視頻至今有125萬多點擊量，一萬
多條評論。許多網友對他能夠平安離開中國感到慶幸，也有少數人質疑他是否做了違反中
國規定的事情。
馬修說，到香港後，他從朋友處得知，惠州當地的交通部門，還有公安部門甚至軍方都在
找他，當局認為他用無人機在惠州拍攝的航拍視頻中包含軍事基地。
但是他說，他的無人機在當地注冊過，如果是禁飛區，會出現提示，而且中國網友在中國
視頻網站上上傳過一模一樣的航拍圖，並沒有什麼問題。
他說：“我能理解的就是，他們想要弄一個針對我的案子。我的內蒙之行顯然於事無補。
我想他們認為我是不受管控的記者，認為我試圖把那裡的錄像傳播出去，試圖揭露那裡發
生的某些政治動蕩。”
知道這些信息後，馬修認為只有回美國才是最安全的。當時，他妻子還在申請綠卡，護照
不在身邊，無法出境。他決定在香港停留，等待消息。大約一個月後，他妻子終於拿到綠
卡，帶著孩子順利出關。他們沒有在香港做片刻停留，直接在機場會合，購買機票前往美
國。
在馬修離開中國的幾個月後，曾在他視頻中出現過的加拿大人麥克·斯帕弗（Michael
Spavor）被中國以涉嫌從事間諜活動的罪名逮捕。他和以同樣罪名被中國當局逮捕的另一
位加拿大人麥克·科夫裡格（Michael Kovrig, 中文名康明凱）至今仍被拘禁。他們的被
捕被認為與加拿大警方應美國引渡要求逮捕華為高管孟晚舟有關，但北京方面否認兩者之
間的關系。
馬修說，如今回想，當時中國當局可能是打算放他走的，但他表示：“如果看一看麥克所
經歷的人質外交，我想，如果你繼續待的時間過長，在看到了警告跡象後仍然逗留，那你
有可能也會經歷類似的事情。”
“我想要一吐為快”
回到美國後，馬修繼續經營YouTube頻道，目前有粉絲近68萬。相比過去輕鬆的生活話題
，他開始轉向評論中國政治和社會議題。
他說：“我終於回到美國後，我意識到，我有太多的東西想要說，尤其是人權那些我之前
沒辦法討論的話題，我想要把那些話一吐為快。”
他說，他在中國的那些經歷讓他認識到，中國政府是多麼想要掩蓋這些問題，不想讓外國
人看到，他們推動輿論宣傳，還雇傭外國人來宣傳中國的正面形象。
馬修說，他也曾覺得中國的生活自由愜意，比如基礎設施和生活上的便利，但是當深入瞭
解中國之後，就會發現這些自由都是表面的。
他說：“中國存在的真正壓迫需要一些時間才會看到。…..對少數民族的政治打壓，對言
論自由和網上言論的審查，以至於人們都不再想表達他們的想法，或者甚至不再有想法。
”
“我沒辦法不去談論這些。我覺得這是我的義務。”馬修說。
