Even though Pixar's Inside Out will only open in Singapore next week (27 Aug), we had the chance to watch it in Cairns back in June. And the short summary is - do not wait for the DVD because we all LOVE it! It's utterly amazing how Pixar can come out with an animated movie that appeals to the kids and yet connects to parents on DIFFERENT levels.
The movie is about abstract concepts like feelings (Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust & Fear), long term memory and conscience but yet strangely, recognizable when they are given shape and form in the movie. For parents, this is a MUST-WATCH movie because of the underlying lesson it imparts - being happy is not enough on its own. Feeling sad is just as important, and entirely necessary.
I was hit hard by a powerful metaphor in the movie where Joy drew a small circle on the floor and instructed Sadness to stand inside so that she does not upset anything or anyone. How many times have we told our kids to repress their unhappy feelings and just think about the happy stuff?
I shall not divulge more but safe to say, I shed tears during the movie. Not of grief, but more of realisation which has since altered the way I parent my monkies. Yes, the movie is THAT powerful.
And yes, we are so going to watch it again!
P.S. In case you are wondering, Ayd, Ale and Ash are portraying Anger, Joy and Fear. :)
