Today I’m @ifs_events to watch a few speakers who put out messages I respect on social media. @bdccarpenter @soheefit & @jamessmithpt are all well-known proponents of taking healthy, mentally sustainable approaches to fitness and steering clear of a mindset that prioritises “hacking” weight loss or putting it before ones sanity. They’re at the front line of fighting how, particularly as we consume it in well marketed snapshots, a lot of the online fitness culture is misleading.

It’s very easy to live under the illusion that abs and guns must equal happiness - there aren’t many photos of ripped people on Instagram who look miserable, yet I guarantee you many of them are.

It’s not necessarily the acquisition of their physique that made them miserable (though, for many, a life of deprivation and lacking anything that inspires them more than what they look like could have), more that there’s very little correlation between shreddedness and happiness.

Yes, being HEALTHIER means you feel better. How ripped someone is doesn’t provide an indicator of this though.
Yes, time to invest in yourself in the gym is good for your sense of self-worth and mental health, but it doesn’t mean someone is happy with the other 23 hours of their day.

A ripped fitness influencer I know in Vegas eats donuts and pizza all day and has to recreationally “medicate” his way through his daily battle with depression.

In their podcast this week Ben & James talked about the different ways in which a lack of inspiration and contentment showed itself in their habits and decision making.

My recommendation would be to focus on the things that improve your health & contentment. Go to the gym because it’s rewarding to spend that time exercising and use the modality that you enjoy most and look forward to. Make sound dietary decisions because the energy they give you is rewarding.

Look for something in the rest of each day that you find rewarding. Time with family. Painting or playing music. Checking in with a friend who you know is struggling. Studying a subject you love that might just allow you to make it your career.

抗疫日久,無論大人小朋友都有各種壓力,容易出現焦慮、抑鬱等情緒問題,在家有何方法減壓?不如試試禪繞畫(Zentangle),就是那種圖案密密麻麻、看似錯綜複雜的圖畫,只需一張紙一支筆,不用講究藝術天份,任何年齡的人都可以進行,畫作順著靈感而行,不用使用橡皮擦,畫畫時的專注和平靜,可以有減壓作用,亦可以訓練耐性,想了解更多不妨上網搜尋更多資料。
初試禪繞畫:
1. 選一張正方形的紙,任何大小都可以,初學者可選小一點,畫作會比較快完成更有滿足感。
2. 用一支鉛筆或黑色筆,在紙上畫上四點圓點,用線連起來。
3. 用線條畫分四個區域,直線曲線皆可。
4. 選一個區域,用重複圖案或線條將它填滿,可以是幾何圖案、波浪或者植物紋理。
5. 隨意將圖案之間的空間填滿色。
6. 餘下三個區域同樣做法即可。

Draw a Zentangle to relieve stress
It is inevitable to feel stressful after dealing with the pandemic for a prolonged period of time. Are there ways to de-stress? Try Zentangle, which involves seemingly complicated tangled and repeated patterns. All you need is a piece of paper and a pen, and you do not need to be artistic to complete this exercise. Individuals of any age can paint a Zentangle, you paint according to your inspiration, and eraser is not required. When painting, try to stay focused and cultivate inner peace, as it helps to relieve stress and train our patience. You can find more information online if you wish to learn more about Zentangle.
Zentangle for beginners:
1. Choose a piece of square paper of any size, beginners are advised to start with a smaller piece of paper, as it will speed up the process, giving them a sense of accomplishment.
2. Use a pencil or black pen, drop four dots on the paper, and link the dots up with lines.
3. Use straight or curved lines to divide them into four zones.
4. Select a zone, use a repeated pattern or line to fill it up – it can be geometric shapes, wave patterns or textures of a leaf.
5. Color the space in between as you wish.
6. Repeat the same process for the three remaining zones.

Really love the Botanic Batik. The batik dyes is used as an alternative to toxic chemical. These dyes are ecological friendly colorants from tropical plants including leaves, barks, flowers and fruits from mangoes, jackfruit, mangosteen, mangroves and etc. Interesting 😍

A new illustration experiment I finished recently. I saw this old telephone box on one of our (mine and Kana’s) evening walks. Lately, we go outside mostly after the sun goes down - because of the heat.
I really liked the light coming from the telephone box and the house deep in a garden on the left side so I made some photos for future reference. This time though I used them only as inspiration to make up my own scene from scratch. I think it came out pretty nice.
I also used an airbrush with watercolor paints for some soft highlights and shadows for the first time! We have one on hand because Kana used to use it to paint her clay figurines. I knew that the Japanese animation background painters use airbrushes so I wanted to try it out too. It worked great!
It took me 2 days to finish this piece - it takes longer with no linework but I think it was worth it.
Used tools:
・paper: Canson, moulin du roy, cold press, 300g/m watercolor paper
・sketch: Bic evolution HB pencil
・colors: my main Schmincke watercolor set, mostly Potters Pink, Payne’s Grey and Prussian Blue
・airbrush
・white Rotring ink

I've created a portrait of Aung San Suu Kyi with 2000 white carnations and 5 kilos of red dye to create her portrait. I cannot think of a more inspiring person alive than Aung San Suu Kyi, nor a more moving love story.
I've used flowers to represent her because...well, have you noticed she's ALWAYS seen with flowers in her hair? Apparently, her father, General Aung San, used to tie flowers to ASSK's hair when she was a child, before he was assassinated. That could be a way of remembering him, and to show her femininity under all that stress and chaos she went through. Red represents love, passion, sacrifice and blood. This is the first time I'm using live objects - flowers - for my project...flowers, like humans, eventually die. This piece celebrates this little time we have here on earth called life.
