"The way the money travels around the world is so complicated for laypersons in #Malaysia to understand, that’s why I want to use cartoons.
As the #1MDB trial of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak continued today, I spoke with Malaysian cartoonist #Zunar about how he uses cartoons to translate an international finance scandal to the masses.
His cartoons -- using charged symbols like diamond rings and Birkin bags -- were so effective, they inspired protesters sick of the alleged corruption of the former PM and his wife Rosmah Mansor. They also nearly landed him in prison.
"By making it simple, and giving something for the people to laugh, they will understand more and the impact will be more," Zunar says.
He adds that he is concerned about the pace of the ongoing trial: "Many Malaysians think the process is too slow... People are really angry, but I also worry in terms of the 1MDB case being so complex, there's so many technical things. Could Najib get away with it?"
