As #暖男爸爸 ends tonight, I’d like to take a moment to thank three very amazing people.
When producer Cyrus Ho and writer-director Peter Tsi chatted with me earlier this year, I loved their vision— a story around family, and about real people dealing with life’s challenges, finding ways to be strong and positive. It’s a timely message.
But I also do remember us chatting about social stereotypes and “typecasting”— how people would often only ask me to do the same role without imagining otherwise. Peter said, “We’ll change that.”
Now, Covid came and our lives were turned upside down. While I worked SO HARD to learn my lines, I have to admit I was not in a very good mental and emotional state at that time. I was exhausted from all the changes and responsibilities I had in my other lines of work. At some point, I felt like my brain wasn’t processing anything.
Then came Connie Tam to the rescue. Being a producer, it wasn’t her job to sit with me to rehearse my lines. But she did. Every week. More than helping me drill these lines, she encouraged me to be resilient, and I learned a lot in the process.
I had such a good experience with all the cast and crew. Everyone was always so respectful and supportive of each another, and I really truly did feel welcome— even as we overcame our language barriers. We often talk about diversity in film and tv... ViuTV is “walking their talk,” that I can see.
I do hope that our show has made an impact in your life. The support of our viewers has made us remember how important it is to keep telling the amazing stories of people, and that in spite of the challenges, there is still so much light and hope in this world.
