I called Vietnam PM Nguyễn Xuân Phúc today to congratulate him on his re-election to the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the successful conclusion of the 13th CPV National Congress.

Singapore has excellent relations with Vietnam. Our economic ties are extensive, and we work closely in many areas. We look forward to strengthening our Strategic Partnership, and plan to deepen our bilateral cooperation, including in digital economy and innovation, and smart cities. We will continue to work towards reopening borders and resuming travel when the time is right. I wished PM Phúc and the people of Vietnam well, and hope to welcome him to Singapore soon! – LHL

On Taiwan Hashtag hosted by Ross Feingold, we are joined by Legislator Wang Ting-yu 王定宇 of the Democratic Progressive Party. Legislator Wang, who regularly tweets from @MPWangTingyu in English, explains why his Tweets call protesters in Hong Kong “freedom fighters” and the reasons why people in Taiwan have followed events in Hong Kong so closely. Legislator Wang discusses why the Republic of China is the country’s name for now, his support for a US Navy port call at Tsoying Navy Base in Kaohsiung, and legislative initiatives he has worked on to protect Taiwan from foreign enemies. Legislator Wang represents a constituency in Tainan City and is seeking re-election, so we also discuss his
campaign strategy against his Kuomintang opponent.

On Taiwan Hashtag hosted by Ross Feingold, we discuss Taiwan election lingo. What does it mean when politicians in Taiwan accuse each other of creating a feeling of impending doom for the country – wang guo gan (亡國感) – a word play on the Mandarin name for the popular snack dried mango strips, or mang guo gan (芒果乾). President Tsai Ing-wen’s Democratic Progressive Party supporters allege the election of Kuomintang candidate Han Kuo-yu will result in the end of Taiwan’s autonomy due to concerns Han favors better relations with China. Kuomintang supporters allege Tsai’s re-election will doom the Republic of China, given the DPP’s historically limited support for the Republic of China name and constitution and preference to rename the country under a new constitution. Do voters worry that Tsai or Han will hasten the end of the Republic of China, or Taiwan, and the autonomy and freedoms it enjoys today? Watch our show for a discussion about doom and mango in Taiwan politics.
