Being a fishing village, there is no shortage of seafood supplies at Tanjung Piandang... a short 20 minute drive away from Nibong Tebal, the south-most town of Penang state. It is one of the popular destinations to source for some fresh seafood (and of course to satiate the cravings). One of the few places to get really good and inexpensive seafood at Tanjung Piandang is Fifty Heng Kee Seafood Restaurant 50興記海鮮飯店, a well-established Chinese seafood restaurant that is known to almost everyone staying in the fishing village. The place offers a big Chinese menu, not only seafood dishes but the usual Chinese stir-fry dishes that you can find in most Chu-Char places in Penang. No frills and nothing overly showy, this place serves some of the freshest seafood supplies in the neighborhood and most importantly.... budget friendly. A place that you would not want to miss if you happen to visit Tanjung Piandang.

During Chinese New Year, the majority of the restaurants are closed for the holidays up to 5 days (except hotels). I had to find a restaurant for family dinner during that time. I first shortlisted 10 restaurants (those restaurants are relatively small and family-owned, so no Facebook or website) for my mom to call. Guess what, they were all closed!!! Heaven helps those who help help themselves. Chef Luo’s, one of the Taiwanese celebrity chefs, is opened for business during the holiday! The restaurant ( 駱師父醬味川客菜 ) specializes in Sichuan and Hakka cuisines. Speaking of Hakka cuisine, the Hakka stir-fry is a must! It’s the dish that reflects the culture of Hakka people. The stir-fry consists of pork belly, bean curds, squid, coriander, celery, scallions, and soy sauce. To reflect the hard work and thrifty nature of the Hakka people, most of their food are preserved, which can be kept and eaten for quite a number of days! It might be a bit (or very salty) on its own, but perfect when pairing with rice or the perfect pal for drinking needs!

Gourmands residing in the neighborhood of Tanjung Bungah will not be new to the name- Hai Wei Seafood Restaurant. The well-established Chinese restaurant was previously housed under a low-cost flat in the vicinity but has since moved to Precinct 10. The place is known to churn out some of the best Claypot Crab Rice and Seafood dishes. The new place at Precinct 10 is huge and could easily accommodate more than 25 tables (a mix of big and small ones). The menu is pretty huge, with familiar Chinese stir-fry dishes suitable for both budget-watchers or those with deep-pockets. Though regular patrons would like to re-visit their favorite restaurant but the lackluster service tells them otherwise. The serving speed on our visit was extremely slow and many could not wait for their turn and eventually left. Fortunately, the food quality did manage to compromise the dissatisfaction....

We love Kimchi Jjigae (also known as kimchi soup or stew in English). This soup is super easy to make and you just need to cook some rice to go with it and call it a day. So easy! A big shout-out to Lady Boss Choi of Hanwoori Korean restaurant in Singapore. This restaurant is in our neighbourhood and her kimchi jjigae is really really good. If you don't like seafood, you can also use shabu shabu pork belly or beef. You don't have to season the meat, just add them around the same time as we added the seafood.

Seafood Kimchi Jjigae 韩国海鲜泡菜汤 (Kimchi Soup / Stew)
Ingredients:
Serves 4 - 5 pax

1.5L water
6 tablespoons light soy sauce
4 cloves of chopped garlic
1 teaspoon grounded black pepper
6 tablespoons Korean chilli powder (gochugaru)
3 tablespoons gojuchang (Korean chilli paste)
450g kimchi
300g silken tofu
1 red onion - sliced
4 fresh shitake mushrooms - sliced
3 potatoes - sliced
50g sweet potato vermicelli (can be replaced with glass noodles)
2 stalks of spring onion (can be replaced with scallion)
1 teaspoon salt (season to taste)
200g prawns
200g baby octopus (can be replaced with squid)
300g venus clams
150g enoki mushrooms
Add some white vinegar at the end of the cooking if you like the soup to be more tangy.

Preparation:
1. Heat up a frying pan, add some oil. Stir fry with pork slices and leek to enhance flavors.
2. Add Korean soy sauce, minced garlic and minced ginger and Korean fine chili powder.
3. Stir fry with cabbage and onion. Then add 600 ml of water and bring to boil.
4. Add carrot, prawns, abalone and mussels until almost fully cooked.
5. Seasoning with oyster sauce, salt and sugar.
6. Add shiitake mushrooms, green pak choy, squids and ground black pepper.
7. Put the cooked noodles into a noodle bowl. Add seafood and soup to finish.

2. 洋蔥、椰菜/高麗菜下鍋炒勻注入600ml水燒開,把調味料之蠔油、鹽、糖下鍋拌勻。
3. 甘荀、蝦、鮑魚、藍青口下鍋煮至八成熟,然後下鮮冬菇、小棠菜煮開,最後下魷魚燙熟,加入調味料之黑胡椒粉入鍋。
4. 把麵條煮熟放在碗裡,然後加入海鮮湯、韭菜便可。
