#the50centsfest (五毛钱美食荟萃) is happening this weekend on 27 and 28 July 2019 at @chinatownfoodstreet , Smith Street! This year’s festival spotlights Hokkien heritage, and features over 40 stalls and mobile vendors peddling an assortment of more than 50 different savouries and sweets.
In its fourth edition this year, everything at this award-winning festival is priced from a humble S$0.50 to no more than S$3.00,
and visitors get to taste traditional Hokkien dishes – some of which are rare finds these days – ranging from Hokkien-style rice, noodles and nourishing soups, to snacks, small pastries, and ice-cold desserts and drinks.
Here are some not-to-be-missed highlights to look out for:
① 𝗕𝗘𝗡𝗚 𝗛𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗧’𝗦 𝗞𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗕𝗔 𝗕𝗔𝗢
Founded in 1975, Beng Hiang is one of the heritage Hokkien restaurants that The Fifty Cents Fest is bringing on board this year.
This 44-year-old restaurant is well-known for its melt-in-the-mouth kong ba bao (braised pork belly bun), which is going for just $1.00 at the event!
② 𝗛𝗜𝗗𝗗𝗘𝗡 𝗛𝗢𝗞𝗞𝗜𝗘𝗡 𝗧𝗔𝗜 𝗣𝗔𝗜 𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗣𝗢𝗣-𝗨𝗣
Inspired by the famous Malaysia Tai Pai Tong concepts, this pop-up restaurant is specially created just for The Fifty Cents Fest 2019, and is “hidden” along Chinatown Food Street*. This unassuming #food spot serves #traditional Hokkien dishes, like hei zho (prawn rolls), fried black Hokkien mee, as well as Buddha Jumps Over The Wall, a rich and nutritious soup made with a medley of premium ingredients like conpoy, fish maw, abalone and ginseng, at a steal of just $3.00!
*The location of this hidden pop-up will be revealed in a directory at the actual event. So look out for it!
③ 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗘 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗦
Alongside the feasting, The Fifty Cents Fest promises an all-rounded, buzzing atmosphere complete with getai and opera performances, a Mixed Goods Store retail lane selling Hokkien-inspired merchandise, a Hokkien wedding-themed photobooth, an arcade zone with old-school games including whack-a-frog, bishi bashi and toy catcher machines, and more.
