Yishun Park Hawker Centre is one of the hawker centres I visit frequently. Many hawkers have become friends and it warms my heart when they can remember my orders. This personal touch puts a smile on my face every time.
One of the stalls I frequent is One Mouth Noodle. The owner, a former interior designer, is part of NEA’s Incubation Stall Program. When he first opened his stall, we interviewed him and he was so shy. Now, whenever we head over for dinner, he will always remember us and chat like old friends.
This is the beauty of hawker centres, isn’t it? Not only can we find delicious food here, but the place is always bustling with so much life and laughter. This is uniquely Singapore and something you can’t find anywhere else in the world.
If you love hawker food, join us and celebrate our hawker culture at SG HawkerFest from 26 Dec 2020 to 11 Jan 2021. Find out more about the event here: https://go.gov.sg/sghawkerfest

A bee 🐝that will not stop eating will eventually become chub-beeeee 😆🍯 ✨Can’t stop using my @puritisg Manuka Honey for almost everything under the sun! ☀️
.
@puritisg Manuka Honey has a uniquely rich complex flavour and a distinctly smooth, creamy, velvety texture and besides drinking it with warm water, I used it in the Manuku Honey Prawn recipe as seen! 🍤
.
📌RECIPE : Marinate prawns with a generous amount of @puritisg honey, sesame oil, light soya sauce and @liloikanbilis mushroom & scallop powder. Best left to marinate for at least 2 hours or overnight. Heat oil in pan, pan fry. Be careful not to overcook prawns. Cook remaining marinate in pan and pour over prawns for a sweet, caramelized taste. Sprinkle sesame seeds and serve. 🐝Bee rice made with egg yolk for the yellow color 💛
.
@puritisg’s Manuka Honey 🍯15+ UMF has an MGO rating of 550+, meaning it is loaded with the naturally occurring compound methylglyoxal which is thought to give Manuka its unique properties -natural health benefits, natural healing properties. Because it’s a complex superfood that contains an abundance of nutritional and well-being benefits, with around 4 times the mineral content of other honeys and rich in vitamins and antioxidants - I feel assured to introduce it to my kids* and family. ☺️*Not for babies under 1

We went down to the Legendary Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice to complete a Curry Rice Challenge! Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice is a famous Hainanese Curry Rice shop located at Jalan Besar. They are a mainstay for late-night patrons looking for an affordable meal, closing only in the wee hours of the morning and a fully-loaded plate would cost between $4-6 dollars depending on your choice of toppings.
Hainanese Curry Rice is a uniquely Singaporean dish inspired by British, Hainanese and Peranakan settlers in Singapore. A standard serving would include a fried egg, pork chops, braised pork belly and braised cabbage piled on white rice before being smothered by a thick, fragrant curry. Different restaurants would have their own take on the curry and toppings provided, with the curry usually being thick but varying in taste.
For my giant plate, I requested 7 portions of rice, a pile of braised cabbage, fried eggs, braised pork belly, chicken chops, pork chops, curried chicken wings, deep-fried tofu and rounded it off with some assorted greens. As per their namesake, each meat item was cut upon serving with a pair of scissors.
This monster plate was then generously topped with curry, the tofu braising liquid and a spicy red gravy, enveloping the entire plate with messy goodness.
The curry was thicker than other places I have tried, barely sweet with a hint of spiciness. It could have been a lot more flavourful. The standout topping would be the pork cutlet, juicy on the inside with a crunchy exterior, with the mild tasting curry allowing the excellent flavour of the cutlet to shine. However, the pork belly was rather disappointing, bland and extremely chewy. Overall, the combination of the 3 sauces with rice and a side is a winning combination, especially considering the cost.
If you are in the area or looking a late-night supper, you could do a lot worse than Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice.

Mee Rebus is a Southeast Asian noodle dish made with yellow noodles and a bunch of sides drenched in a thick brown gravy. The gravy is slightly sweet and spicy, usually made with shallots, lemongrass and galangal among other Asian-style aromatics, resulting in a deep and complex sauce. Standard toppings include hard-boiled eggs, bergedil (potato cake) and sliced chillies.
At Rahim Muslim Food, a specialist Mee Rebus stall that is currently manned by a 3rd generation chef, they offer a decades-long refined Mee Rebus affordably priced at $4-$6 depending on your choice of toppings. They uniquely ladle peanut sauce, which is commonly served with Satay, over your plate of Mee Rebus.
For my challenge, I ordered 7 portions of noodles, together with bergedil, sliced green chillies, poached chicken, hard-boiled eggs, fresh limes, bean sprouts and shredded lime leaves. These were all drenched in the 2 different sauces and topped with cilantro. Mee Rebus usually does not disappoint, but Rahim Muslim Food elevated themselves with their take on gravy and the addition of satay sauce. The gravy was thickened well, supposedly through the use of potatoes, and had sweet, savoury and spicy notes that were brightened by the limes. The peanut sauce was expectedly very nutty and had pleasant crunchy bits of peanuts throughout. Mixing the sauces together added an additional nutty dimension to the flavour profile that was surprisingly delicious.
This was a straightforward challenge and part of my ongoing effort to promote local food with a rich heritage. If you have a craving for Mee Rebus, you will not go wrong with Rahim Muslim Food’s take on this local dish.

For this video, we headed down to Sky Duck Rice to destroy a humongous duck rice platter. Duck rice is a uniquely Southeast Asian dish developed by Chinese immigrants to the region. It is made with duck braised in a slightly sweet, spiced concoction served with plain rice, an optional assortment of braised sides (braised in the same liquid) and chilli sauce. The owner, Uncle Sky, previously ran an excellent chicken rice stall at Maxwell Food Centre that is unfortunately no longer operational.
For my platter, I was given duck meat from a whole duck, pork belly, pork intestines, peanuts and chicken eggs, all of which were braised in the previously mentioned sweet and spiced sauce, served on 7-8 portions of rice and a bowl of soup on the side. It also came with a big bowl of the braising liquid, which I eagerly poured all over the platter, and some chilli sauce. The meats were extremely succulent and tender, although the intestines can be a bit of an acquired taste, and the exceptional flavouring power of being braised in the braising liquid really shone through for every side. Topping up the platter with additional braising liquid, soup and chilli sauce elevated the dish greatly and made this challenge very palatable.
I was thoroughly satisfied with the duck platter offered here and would recommend all of you to try it!
