หลังจากเกิดเหตุการณ์นำกิโยตินมาใช้งานในการตัดคอตัวเองถวายเป็นพุทธบูชา ความสนใจเกี่ยวกับสิ่งนี้ก็กลับมาอีกครั้ง ประกอบกับการใช้งานกิโยตินเป็นเครื่องประหารครั้งแรกก็เกิดขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 25 เมษายน 1792 จึงอยากจะหยิบยกเรื่องเกี่ยวกับสิ่งนี้ ว่าเหตุใดมันจึงกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์ในเชิงลบมากกว่าบวก หรือนำไปสู่การฆ่าตัวตายของพระได้อย่างไร

รู้จักกับกิโยตินกับต้นกำเนิดแห่งความเมตตา

กิโยติน(Guillotine) คือเครื่องประหารที่มีต้นกำเนิดมาจากฝรั่งเศส สร้างขึ้นเพื่อใช้บั่นคอนนักโทษหรือคนผิด ประกอบด้วยโครงไม้ที่แขวนใบมีดทรงสี่เหลี่ยมคางหมูน้ำหนัก 40 กก.ไว้บนสุด ข้างใต้จะเป็นแท่นให้นักโทษประหารวางศีรษะ และทันทีที่ปล่อยเชือกใบมีดจะพุ่งลงมาจากความสูง 2.3 เมตรลงเบื้องล่าง สะบั้นศีรษะของร่างที่อยู่ด้านล่างให้ขาดออกจากตัว เป็นอุปกรณ์ที่มีหลักการทำงานเรียบง่าย และถูกนำมาใช้เป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งความหวาดกลัวในภายหลัง

ผู้คิดค้นเครื่องประหารชนิดนี้คือนายแพทย์ อองตวน หลุยส์(Antoine Louis)ชาวฝรั่งเศส แต่ผู้ที่ทำให้เจ้าเครื่องนี้แพร่หลายคือ ดร.โฌแซ็ฟ-อีญัส กิยอแต็ง (Joseph-Ignace Guilloitin) นายแพทย์ชาวฝรั่งเศสอีกคน จนผู้คนเปลี่ยนชื่อเรียกเครื่องประหารนี้ตามนามสกุลเขา ทุกอย่างเริ่มจากการยุติการใช้งานวงล้อลงทัณฑ์(Breaking wheel)อุปกรณ์ในการประหารแบบเก่าในปี 1791 ด้วยความโหดร้ายทารุณและสยดสยองที่เกิดกับนักโทษมากเกิน นั่นทำให้พวกเขาต้องสรรหาอุปกรณ์ในการประหารชีวิตรูปแบบใหม่ ที่ทำให้นักโทษสามารถตายอย่างฉับพลัน เป็นความเห็นทางด้านมนุษยธรรมในฐานะหมอคนหนึ่ง

จากจุดเริ่มต้นอันสวยงามสู่หนทางการนองเลือดอันไม่สิ้นสุด

ถ้านั่นว่าเลวร้ายภายนอกยังมีท่าทีไม่พอใจของนานาประเทศ จากการลุกฮือของฝรั่งเศสที่จบลงด้วยการตัดคอพระเจ้าหลุยส์ที่ 16 และพระนางมารีอังตัวเนต สั่นคลอนเสถียรภาพของระบอบกษัตริย์โดยรวมเป็นอย่างมาก ไหนจะการที่ฝรั่งเศสเผยแพร่แนวคิดปฏิวัติให้ชาติอื่น สิ่งที่เลี่ยงไม่ได้ย่อมเป็นความขัดแย้งขนานใหญ่ ประกอบกับความกระด้างกระเดื่องของอาณานิคม จากภัยที่เข้ามาประชิดจากรอบด้านและความรุนแรงที่พบเห็นอยู่ทุกวัน ทับถมกลายเป็นความหวาดกลัวที่ปูทางไปหาความรุนแรงจนเกินขีดจำกัด

การนองเลือดแผ่ขยายเป็นวงกว้างและไม่มีทีท่าจะจบลง เกิดการบุกเข้าไปสังหารกลุ่มอภิสิทธิ์ชน ทั้งขุนนาง ครอบครัวเจ้าของที่ดิน ไปจนพระ โดยไม่มีหลักเกณฑ์หรือกฎหมายมาตัดสินอาศัยเพียงศาลเตี้ย ใช้การรุมประชาทัณฑ์ไปจนการทารุณกรรมตามอำเภอใจ ทุกอย่างวุ่นวายกลายเป็นความหวาดกลัวครั้งใหญ่ ด้วยประชาชนหวาดกลัวการถูกยึดคืนและสูญเสียอำนาจที่มีในวันนี้จึงพากันคลุ้มคลั่งไม่เลิกรา ภาพความโหดร้ายทารุณเกิดกันทุกหย่อมหญ้าไม่เว้นแต่ละวันอีกทั้งไม่มีทีท่าจะจบลง นำไปสู่รัฐบาลปัจจุบันที่ต้องหาวิธีแก้ไขปัญหา

ตรงนี้เองที่กิโยตินจึงถูกหยิบยกเข้ามามีบทบาทอีกครั้ง อาศัยศีรษะของพระเจ้าหลุยส์ที่ 16 มากรุยทาง กิโยตินกลายเป็นเครื่องประหารที่เป็นสัญลักษณ์รวมศูนย์ความรุนแรงจากรอบด้าน กลายเป็นสิ่งควบคุมความรุนแรงจากฝูงชนที่คลุ้มคลั่ง ด้วยกิโยตินนั้นไม่ได้มีการทรมานหรือใช้ความรุนแรงเกินจำเป็น สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นมีเพียงศีรษะที่หลุดกระเด็นไปจากตัว จบชีวิตของผู้ที่รับโทษทัณฑ์ได้เห็นภาพและรวดเร็ว อาศัยนามของปวงชนไต่สวนนักโทษไปตามกระบวนการยุติธรรม แล้วลากเอาทุกคนที่มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับความรุนแรงมารับโทษ ใช้กิโยตินเป็นเครื่องมือกวาดล้างความรุนแรงด้วยการให้ตำรวจเข้าจับกุม นำตัวกลุ่มนอกกฎหมายมาบั่นคอเรียงตัว นำไปสู่การตัดหัวของผู้คนไปกว่า 20 ,000 คน ไม่เว้นแม้แต่แม็กซีมิเลี่ยน โรเบสปิแอร์(Maximilien Robespierre) ผู้นำเอาสิ่งนี้มาเป็นสัญลักษณ์ความหวาดกลัวที่ต้องถูกตัดหัวไปตามกัน

อีกครั้งที่มันฟังดูน่าตลกและใช่ การใช้งานครั้งนี้มองในทางหนึ่งอาจเป็นตามความตั้งใจของผู้นำเสนอมันมาแต่แรก ทำให้กิโยตินเข้าไปแทนที่จนกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์การประหารแบบอื่น ยุติความรุนแรงที่เกิดขึ้นในยุคนั้นทางหนึ่งคือกฎระเบียบที่เด็ดขาด และภายใต้บ้านเมืองที่เต็มไปด้วยความวุ่นวายในตอนนั้น นี่ถือเป็นอีกทางเลือกที่น่าสนใจ

การตายของโรเบสปิแอร์นับเป็นการสิ้นสุดสมัยความหวาดกลัวและการนองเลือดจากกิโยติน แต่ถามว่าเจ้าสิ่งนี้หายไปจากโลกหรือเปล่า? อย่างเดียวที่ตอบได้คือไม่ รอยแผลและสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นกับกิโยตินฝังลึกลงไปในความทรงจำของผู้คน ดังคำขวัญฝรั่งเศส เสรีภาพ เสมอภาค และภราดรภาพของโรเบสปิแอร์ที่ยังตราตรึงและใช้งานจนปัจจุบัน กิโยตินยังคงมีการใช้งานในฐานะเครื่องประหารมาอย่างยาวนาน เป็นผลให้ตระกูลกิโยตินตัดสินใจเปลี่ยนนามสกุลตัวเองเพื่อไม่ให้ซ้ำกับเครื่องประหารอันนองเลือด เพื่อหลีกหนีความเกี่ยวข้องเกี่ยวกับสัญลักษณ์เปื้อนเลือดอันนี้

อดีตสู่ปัจจุบันสู่การสะบั้นศีรษะในวันนี้ มรดกอันน่าขนลุกจากลัทธิอนาคตวงศ์

อีกสาเหตุที่กิโยตินถูกนำกลับมาพูดถึงอีกครั้งคือเหตุการณ์พระตัดคอตัวเองด้วยกิโยติน สิ่งนี้สร้างแรงสั่นสะเทือนและความหวาดกลัวให้กับผู้คนที่ได้เห็นหรืออ่านข่าว อาจสร้างความไม่สบายใจแก่ผู้ที่ได้รับสาร แต่ก็น่าจะทำให้ผู้คนเกิดความสงสัยเช่นกันว่าสิ่งใดผลักดันให้คนเราทำแบบนั้น

คำตอบคือในอดีตมีหลักฐานอ้างอิงว่ามีการทำแบบนี้เกิดขึ้นจริง ถวายเลือดเนื้อให้แก่ศาสนาเพื่อสนองตอบการเป็นพุทธบูชา เราเรียกแนวคิดนี้ว่าลัทธิอนาคตวงศ์ ที่แพร่หลายกันมาตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา จากคัมภีร์ที่มีชื่อว่า “ทสโพธิสัตตุนิทเส” หรือ “ทศโพธิสัตตุปัตติกถา” เป็นเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับพระพุทธเจ้า 10 พระองค์ ที่บำเพ็ญกุศลโดยอาศัยเลือดและความรุนแรง นำไปสู่ความเชื่อในสมัยต้นกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ที่มีนายบุญเรืองและนายนก ชายสองคนเข้ามาเผาตัวเองตายที่วัดอรุณถือเป็นพุทธบูชา ถึงขนาดมีการสร้างหินสลักและจารึกไว้บันทึกเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้น เรียกว่าเป็นกระแสนิยมพุทธศาสนาในช่วงนั้น ก่อนการเข้ามาของธรรมยุติกนิกายจากรัชกาลที่ 4 เริ่มเข้ามาทดแทน แนวคิดเหล่านี้จึงเบาบางแต่ยังหลงเหลือตามท้องที่ต่างๆ

หากต้องการคำตอบว่านี่คือหนทางทำให้เป็นพระปัจเจกตามความเชื่อในตำราหรือไม่ ผู้เขียนคงไม่สามารถตอบหรือให้ความเห็นเรื่องนี้ได้ แต่ถามว่านี่เป็นเรื่องที่ถูกต้องหรือเปล่าก็บอกได้เต็มปากว่าไม่ เพราะตำรานี้แท้จริงเป็นสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18 คัมภีร์ถูกแต่งขึ้นในอินเดียใต้ โดยพระมหากัสสปะแห่งโจฬะ แน่นอนมันไม่ได้เป็นเรื่องที่มีส่วนอยู่ในพระไตรปิฎกแต่แรก เป็นแค่เรื่องเล่าที่ถูกแต่งเติมขึ้นมาในยุคหลังอย่างแท้จริง

ในส่วนของผู้แต่งหากมาจากโจฬะ นั่นคือดินแดนที่เคยอยู่ในสมัยยุคกลางแถบอินเดียทางตอนใต้ และศาสนาที่ได้รับการเชิดชูที่นั่นคือฮินดู เริ่มเห็นภาพแล้วใช่ไหมครับว่าความเชื่อแนวนี้มันมาจากไหน? ใช่ มันปะปนมากับความพยายามกลืนศาสนาของฮินดู ที่พยายามหลอมรวมเอาทุกความเชื่อและความแตกต่างที่เคยมีไปเป็นส่วนหนึ่ง กร่อนความเชื่อทางศาสนาพุทธที่มีแก่นอยู่ที่ปัญญาและการแก้ปัญหา ให้เหลือแค่แนวทางในการปฏิบัติและทำตัวอย่างฮินดูเท่านั้นเอง

อีกทั้งพระชั้นผู้ใหญ่ นักวิชาการ และนักประวัติศาสตร์หลายแขนงต่างออกมายืนยันเป็นเสียงเดียวกันแล้วว่า คัมภีร์ที่ลัทธิอนาคตวงศ์ยึดถือคือเรื่องที่ไม่เคยมีหรือเกี่ยวข้องกับศาสนาพุทธ ทุกสิ่งเป็นหลักความเชื่อที่แพร่หลายแต่เข้าใจกันผิดๆ อาศัยความเชื่อเรื่องการทำตามคัมภีร์ ยอมตัดคอของตัวเองเพื่อให้ไปถึงการเป็นพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าองค์ต่อไป ถึงจะเป็นด้านตรงข้ามแต่อย่างนั้นจะต่างอะไรกับการใช้งานกิโยตินอย่างหวาดกลัว บั่นศีรษะของคนรอบข้างจากความเชื่อแบบผิดๆ เพื่อสยบความหวาดกลัวและวุ่นวายเสียเท่าไหร่กัน? และถ้ามันแพร่หลายเป็นที่นิยมจะต้องทำให้เกิดการนองเลือดและสูญเสียอีกแค่ไหน?

ทั้งนี้ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับผู้อ่านและคนทั่วไปมาตัดสินแล้วกระมัง ว่าเราจะยังยึดถือเรื่องราวจากวันเก่าที่มีข้อบกพร่องและโต้แย้งมากมาย ทำตามพิธีโบราณที่เราเองก็รู้แก่ใจว่าไม่เคยเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของรากฐานทางศาสนา เป็นสิ่งที่ทำให้ความน่านับถือและเลื่อมใสที่เรามีแปดเปื้อน และทำให้เราห่างไกลจากแก่นที่เป็นเนื้อแท้ของศาสนาพุทธไปมากกว่านี้ไหม

🌪 Typhoons and Hurricanes 颱風與颶風

After a record-setting July—the first in 70 years with no typhoons or tropical storms—Taiwan finally got its first typhoon on Monday, August 3. Not particularly destructive by typhoon standards, Typhoon Hagupit nevertheless dropped heavy rain as it passed by north of the island, causing two casualties—a government employee who drowned at a pumping station and a scooter rider who was injured in a collision with a falling tree.
臺灣創下記錄，70年來首次在7月份沒有任何颱風或熱帶低氣壓，不過在8月3日週一終於迎來今年第一個颱風。以標準來看，輕度颱風哈格比雖然沒有特別具破壞性，但仍為臺灣北部帶來豪雨並造成2人死傷──1名政府人員被發現溺死在抽水站，1名機車騎士遇倒塌路樹受傷。

At the same time, Hurricane Isaias—the second of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, was headed toward the U.S. East Coast after causing flooding and property damage on several Caribbean islands. Typhoons and hurricanes are both large, spinning storms that form in the summer and early fall. They are both cyclones (cyclone comes from the Greek word for wheel) characterized by strong winds that form over tropical or subtropical waters. And they both have a low-pressure “eye” at the center when seen in a satellite image. So what is the difference?

The only difference between typhoons and hurricanes, it turns out, is where they occur. When tropical cyclones with wind speeds of 119 km per hour or higher form in the Northwest Pacific, they’re called typhoons—a word that probably came into English from the Cantonese term for “big wind.” When these same storms form in the Atlantic or Northeast Pacific, they’re called hurricanes—from the Spanish huracán, which was borrowed from Hurikán, the Taíno (a Caribbean tribe) god of storms. What about tropical cyclones that form in the Indian Ocean? They’re just called tropical cyclones.
原來，唯一的不同在於兩者所生成的地方。當熱帶氣旋生成於太平洋西北海域，且風速高達每小時119公里以上時，這些熱帶氣旋就叫做typhoon（颱風）──這個英文字可能源自廣東話「大風」。而同樣條件的暴風雨如果在大西洋或太平洋東北海域生成，就叫hurricane（颶風）──源自西班牙語「huracán」，這個字是借自一支叫做Taíno 的加勒比部落語言，他們稱風暴之王為Hurikán。那在印度洋生成的熱帶氣旋又叫做什麼呢？直接叫tropical cyclone（熱帶氣旋）就好。

His affection for me has never faded for the 19 years that we were together. He loved me from the time I was young and full of confidence, and still adored me when I was all scarred, and blown up with steroid.

When I started to doubt myself, he was the one that dragged me out from the sand, he was the one to bring me back to reality. He pushed me out of the door when all I wanted to do was hide and enclose myself. He knew what I needed, a haircut, some new XL clothes that would make me feel better. He made sure, he would never let anyone that we know see me in a wheel-chair, which I was not ready for.

For 19 years, his unconditional love for me was what made me feel safe and protected. He knew how desperately I wanted to have a baby of our own, he told me, everyone has regrets in their life, you will only have this one, for until death do us apart, it will always be you and me.

Of all my surgeries, there were a few times I was sent to the ICU, he had asked the doctor to let him stay inside, so he could take care of me 24-7 There were no beds, not even chairs to begin with, the nurses was moved by his devotion, they gave him a chair, and that’s where he rested during the nights, dozing on and off.

When I was on the edge of breaking down from the endless surgeries, he knelt before one of the doctor, and begged him to remove the tumor as much as he could, although at the time, we already know it was impossible, just to prolong the time between surgeries.

Together, we encountered fear, desperation, until we were forced to face the reality. Samuel was always there, he rallied me on, I knew I always had him to lean on, and all the while, he was the best care giver ever.

The last surgery before I was pregnant, I was still staying in the hospital learning how to walk, yet again. Samuel said, I will take you abroad for a vacation after we get out of the hospital, you will feel refreshed. I thought he was insane! I couldn’t even stand without assistance. For each wobbly step, I had to stop 3 more seconds for the next one. I was too stuck to go anywhere.

Samuel has, again, worked his magic, made the trip to Japan happen. Amongst all, he had also asked a couple-friend and my sister to accompany us. They were the best and most understanding companions, who stroll the streets of Osaka in baby steps with me.

My hubby was right, the trip made me feel revived. I had the right to lead a normal life, and I had the right to be hopeful again.

We found out about our miracle baby after the trip to Japan, but he was already inside me when I was devouring all those sashimi and raw seafood.

This is not enough to describe what Samuel and I went through. We always joked, if karma existed, maybe I was the villain that he assigned to save the people, therefore we are bond together in this life. No debts one way or the other.
