as of this moment Hong Kong has lost our first ever human life over the monstrous overlord that is the Chinese Communist government.
This evening a young man jumped from a building just beyond the building in the news clip, where demonstrations and police brutality took place just a few days ago. He took his life after hanging a banner that urged the government to cancel the proposed extradition law and to recognize the cities effort for a peaceful demonstration.
As a young man born and bred in Hong Kong I can testify that this is the first ever time a Hongkonger has taken their own life in protest against the government. We Hongkongers were always self perceived to be book-smart, calculating or even materialistic at times. To have someone taking their own life in protest for the greater good of freedom and human rights was unheard of, even unimaginable. This serves to warn the world, especially our Taiwanese cousins, that bowing down to whatever monetary gains the Chinese Communist Party may offer will serve you no good.
May the desperate voice of our city be heard. RIP.

I am Vivek. I am a local born and bred Indian Hong Konger. My family arrived in Hong Kong a long time ago. They found it difficult to communicate with others. As they did not understand Chinese, they could only live but could not survive. My parents made a decision and that was for us to know Chinese. That was why my sister and I attended local schools. They found it a very simple matter. It was already good enough to learn Chinese during class. When I was young, classmates would not mind your race. They would only care about your looks and lifestyle.
At that time, I thought what I did at home was very normal. But I found what others ate and their lifestyle was different from mine. Such things impacted me deeply. It exceeded my learning Chinese during class because I grew up with Hong Kongers. I discovered I can really blend in with the Hong Kong culture and society. I really understood everyone’s attitudes and what people were thinking about.
Many believe being able to speak Cantonese is enough. I think it is only good for general communication. What I learned in class is very different from daily conversations. The interaction between people is even more important.
There are times when I am unhappy, too. Sometimes my teachers will demand others to respect me during class. I feel I do not need my teachers to pressure others to respect me. It brings me even more trouble.
When I was young, my family often encouraged me to not blame all problems on others. If you do not do well enough, it does not necessarily mean others do not respect me or have prejudice against me. I should instead ask myself why others will do such things. I should think of how I could improve myself.
My mother taught me that my race and identity is not my mistake. If people do not accept you, that is their problem. But you do not need everyone to accept you. I should just relax a little. Looking at things from this perspective can resolve a lot of wrongs in a lot of situations. When you look at things from another angle, there can be profound problems.

Everyone in society should be a role model, not only for their own self-respect, but for respect from others😍
